From bringing the whole family together for movie night, to keeping you company on rainy afternoons, your television is one of the most important items in your home. Whether you're looking to upgrade your existing TV or pick up a secondary one for the bedroom, keep the following things in mind while you're shopping for your next TV.
Consider the maximum screen size that your room can accommodate, while still allowing you to sit a comfortable distance from the TV. If you do have the space for a big screen television, however, don't mistake size for picture quality, which is mostly determined by resolution. A television with a Full HD 1080p resolution displays HD content in crisp, sharp detail. TVs with 4K resolution, meanwhile, offer 4 times the pixel density of a Full HD 1080p television, delivering Ultra HD content in spectacular, lifelike detail. Other considerations include whether to buy a TV with a curved display (for more immersive viewing experiences) or a TV with support for 3D content.
LCD is the most common type of TV display. It uses a backlight to illuminate its pixels, offering high refresh rates and solid brightness levels. LED televisions are actually LCD televisions that are backlit by lots of LEDs (light-emitting diodes). These diodes last longer and use less power than conventional LCD TVs. OLED televisions, by contrast, feature no backlight. Instead, each pixel produces its own light, which allows the brightness of an OLED television to be controlled pixel by pixel, producing true-to-life colours and deep, absolute blacks.
A Smart TV connects to your home internet network, usually by Wi-Fi, allowing you to download a variety of apps and games to the TVs dashboard from an integrated app directory. Most Smart TVs come with popular apps already preinstalled, such as Netflix and YouTube. This means you can stream your favourite YouTube clips and Netflix shows without the use of a secondary media streamer, such as Chromecast, Roku, Apple TV, or a gaming console.
