eReaders 101 - What to look for when buying an eReader

eReader Device

Introduction

One of this year’s hottest electronic items is eReaders. Light and portable, eReaders have the ability to hold hundreds of books without the added weight. They also provide users with the ability to access over one million free public domain titles, borrow books for free from most major Canadian public libraries, and books content comes in convenient PDF and ePub formats.

Screen Type

eBook readers come with several different screen types –

Electronic Ink (eInk), ePaper

Electronic Ink (eInk), ePaper
  • - Easy on your eyes for long periods of reading
  • - Amazing battery life (up to 2 weeks of normal reading) as the unit only uses power when flipping pages and downloading content
  • - Non-reflective screen makes reading in the sun possible

Non-Backlit LCD

Non-Backlit LCD
  • - Same benefits as eInk, but also enables improved images, animated icons and smoother page turns
  • - Battery life is largely the biggest negative on these models with battery life of up to 12 hours on models
  • - Reading in the sun is also an issue with this screen type

Full color backlit LCD

Backlit LCD
  • - Great for models with web browsing
  • - Harder on the eyes when reading for long periods of time
  • - Battery life again is the biggest concern with this model

Screen Size

Most eBook readers have a pocketbook-sized screen of either 5 or 6 inches (12.7 or 15.24cm). That’s not much of a difference, but it does impact both readability and portability. That said, even the largest reader is easier to carry around than the hundreds of books it’s capable of carrying.

Sourcing Books

Currently, content options vary depending on which reader you purchase. The growth of popularity of these devices means that thousands of titles are being added to every eBook reader’s compatibility list all the time.

eReader Manufacturers eBook Sites:

The major manufacturers of eReaders typically all have their own eBook sites, these sites all typically offer books for slightly lower pricing than bookstores (most of these stores also have over 1 million titles available):

Sony – Sony eBookstore
Apple iPad – iTunes store
Kindle – Amazon.com
KOBO – KOBO Bookstore
Google – Google eBookstore

Canadian Public Libraries:

Most major Canadian public libraries now offer free eBook rentals. You simply sign-up for a library card and then download your rentals for free from the comfort of your own home.

Public Domain Books:

Google’s bookstore offers over 1 million public domain books to consumers for FREE.

Library eReader

Open Source eReaders vs. Closed Source:

Open source eReader means that the eReader has the capability to have content added from any location (anywhere you can source a ePub, PDF or any other support file format).

Closed source means that you are locked to sourcing content from the manufacturers bookstore.

Open Source eReaders:
Sony, KOBO, PanDigital, Aluratek, etc.

Closed Source eReaders:
iPad (unless you download an App for a different Bookstore)
Kindle (must use Amazon’s site)
