Not ready for release

When it works it's really great.. but it quickly gets old when you have to ask 8 times to turn on the lights. For example, you can say 'turn off the lights in living room' and it will work. Then right away ask 'turn on the lights in loving room' and it will reply 'sorry I can't do that' even thought it just completed the same command less than a few seconds ago. Ask another 8 times and it will work. Again some of the features work great all the time. Then some don't.

So awesome

Haven't tried the others so don't know how they compare, but Google's recognition on what you're saying has been almost flawless. It's almost immediately responsive and is an awesome interface at a great price. There are some fun little tricks you can do with it. Like have it play the sound of coyotes howling or tell a random joke. And of course it'll do all the practical things like translations, weather reports, answer questions, set alarms, tell you your schedule, etc.. The voice controls get even better if you sign up with Spotify and have some Hue lights. Spotify in particular I didn't care about before but now is nothing short of amazing and the sound quality is excellent. I was a bit uneasy it is an active microphone that's always listening, so I put it on a light switch controlled plug. I've not bothered to turn it off much but nice to know I can. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is I think it's still improving and though it'll control Chromecast (Netflix & Youtube) it won't control my Smart TV. Yet at least. But voice controlling your devices is the future so I do recommend it.

like it

i originally bought a google home from the U.S before they were available in canada. I preordered this last one through bestbuy.ca to get the free chromecast(even though i didnt really need it since i already have one). At the start things were a bit rocky since there was a glitch between philips hue and google home. Everytime i tried turning on or off a light with google home, it would work, then disconnect from my wifi and take forever before it would reconnect and stop saying"something went wrong". Since they fixed the problem it has worked very well. I have a smart things hub, philips hue, sonos system, chromecast AND a chromecast audio connected to my sonos play 5 and logitech harmony remote hub. Downstairs i have a ps4, and x box one, and a shield tv. Using my google home, in conjunction with my harmony remote and IFTTT(IF THIS THEN THAT),i turn on my gaming systems, tv amplifier and lights to a specific color for each gaming system. when its time to go to sleep i say "okay google, goodnight" and it shuts everything down. As a wifi speaker the google home is okay, nothing special. At lower volume it sounds fine. If i tell it to play a specific station on sonos, then it plays to my play 5through chromecast audio. Only problem is, sometimes the music buffers once in a while. I guess playing directly to my sonos from my router is a stronger signal than going through google home to chromecast audio to sonos play 5. Also i create groupings to send the music to my other 2 sonos speakers throughout the house, but sonos never remembers the groupings so the next time i have to create the group all over again, otherwise it will only play on my play 5. Recently my google home started turning on an extra philips hue light when i tell it to turn on my kitchen lights. cant figure out why, but i may just remove the bulb from philips hue, then add it again and see if that helps. overall very happy with both of my google home speakers. Hope they will add native control to sonos speakers so i dont have to use chromecast audio or harmony remote to control them through google home.

Love it!

Love our Google Home! Who cares if Big Brother is listening...he always has just through different devices. I would seriously miss our Google Home if it ever broke! Love setting timers while cooking, fun to play Mad Libs or trivia with friends, so handy for asking the weather and the operating hours of stores/restaurants. The best part is connecting our Spotify account for on demand music! Also LOVE having our Hue lights connected for instant lighting control. Been using our US one for two years, had a little trouble setting up because of the US/Canada differences but now that there is a Canadian version, you'll have no trouble!

Bit of a gimmick, but fun...and functional

I had no expectations when I bought this - just another piece of the google puzzle. It's pretty fun to throw questions at it, my kids love this aspect. It's fairly small, and non-intrusive. I find the microphone fairly hit N miss, it probably works better if you have a booming voice. It isn't very practical imho, but can be useful in certain instances (ie. winning arguments). Overall it's a fun little tool that can help, if you remember it's even there :)

Half baked

It works well with the lights (Philips Hue), for music you have only Google Music, Spotify requires a premium account and it is NOT working with the Android TVs. I have a new Sony and it says "Cannot work with Android TV" or something to that effect. It does work with a Chromecast plugged in the TV but it defeats the purpose.Google support could not explain why it's not working. Please stop advertising as working with the Android TVs, It is NOT.

Great Product, needs some key updates

The Google Home is a great product, but it lacks certain key elements (texting, to-do list, calls). If Google could figure out how to incorporate elements like that, 5 stars would be easily attainable.

Tells you the time, temp, news local stores, etc. etc. Simply ask any question and get the answer. Google Home

I was quite excited to receive my Google Home. I am a chemo patient and after chemo I have to rest a great deal. Google home is like having a friend with me. It tells me the time, the weather, wakes me up, lulls me to sleep and is a friendly voice when I am alone which is most of the time. I like that is will play my Netflix choices and music that I request. At this time it cannot play a specific episode on Netflix but I think that it will soon. Hopefully it will do more at time goes on. Thank You Google, this has been a great help to me.

No easy set-up procedure

It is difficult to figure out how to set up the Home. The instructions are not clear. Not every one is computer expert or Google expert. No one can understand what the Home apps about. The user manual is over simply to follow through, Still not set up the Google Home yet. Only those examples provides on the notes came with the product workable but nothing else.

Fun product

So far I have it hooked to Netflix, my wemo lights, nest and my wink hub. There was really no great surprise in how this device works. It can't know what you are saying without sending that info off to some party to be interpreted. Whether it's google or somebody else really doesn't matter. Don't get this device if you are squeamish about privacy. Or hit the mute button all the time if that makes you feel better. If you are expecting this device to do everything magically for you, you will likely be disappointed. If you are looking to augment your home automation and willing to be patient, then you will enjoy your Google Home.

Love it

I've worked with home control and automation for years... For audio and video nothing can compare to a google home, a chromecast, a few chromecast audios connected to speakers, and a Netflix account. With IFTTT you can do a lot... And with some tech skills you can do anything. Even if you don't want to get into the complicated stuff... There is a lot of useful stuff accessible for non techies. It is really simple to use and because it's voice controlled, anyone that can speak clearly can use it... Regardless of your tech abilities.

Not ready for prime time

I pre-ordered this and looked forward to see how it would perform. What it does, it does well, e.g., ask for the weather or the local news. However, there were too many responses "I can't do this yet" (or words to that effect). For me, it didn't enough to justify using it instead of my smartphone to check the weather, news or play music. I returned it the next day. Perhaps will fill a need a year from now ????

just what i hoped it would be love how it will start my tv with the the included chromecast.play music all day long with a google play subscription thinking of adding a 3rd shrome cast just to play audio wirelessly to my old home stereo with the command of google home.remember it takes a little getting use to. certain way of how you ask questions most are straight forward some not so but with paitence you will get it . the google home app will help with that .if you like gadgets you will like this

Super Haut parleur intelligent

Mostly a novelty

I was a bit disappointed overall when I started to use Google Home because I realize many of the things I thought I could say or do don't actually work or they don't work yet. Some features are indicated to be a future upgrade perhaps but since Google Home has been in the USA for awhile now I'm surprised it doesn't work. I cannot work with the calendar very easily, Reminders are apparently not supported yet. It can't seem to send msgs through a phone and casting to my Nvidia Shield only works sometimes. It often says "Sorry something went wrong" when trying to use those casting functions. Overall it's useful for general questions and listening to music (although it's a bit lacking on the treble and seems to distort at higher volumes. )

Fun, useful and a little gimicky

Still learning new things this can do every day, but for the most part, we've incorporated it into daily use. Having a bunch of other Google products certainly helps, with the Chromecast/Netflix/Youtube controls being the most useful. Seamless integration in that regard. Works well with our Hue system as well. Plays albums/songs/playlists from Google Play Music well. A little clunky in longer responses, sometimes doesn't pick up the 'Hey Google' or "OK Google' call which gets annoying. Kids love the animal sounds and jokes.

Good product with lots of great potential

Works really well to do the things it advertises it can do - play media form Spotify/Youtube/Netflix, control lights and thermostats, searches...etc. However, I think it's missing a couple features that I consider fundamental, especially considering it's an "assistant": - Can't set reminders. This is by far one of the most useful features form an assistant, but this one still can't do it. - Can't link other calendars. I have both my personal gmail calendar and my work calendar, when I ask it about my day, it only tells me about my personal calendar (work meetings cover 95% of my overall calendar). - Can't link other people. This is available in USA apparently, but not in Canada yet, meaning everything everyone searches is linked to my account. I still love it and I'm hoping these are developed soon and brought to Canada!

Using it with Chromecast, Lutron Caseta switches and just picked up a Nest Thermostat. No problems and does what I expected. Still finding amazing how I can ask for a cat video and next thing my TV turns on and there's a cat video playing. Also great as a music streamer.

So far, so good

Purchased two weeks ago, I have realistic (I think) expectations. Simple tasks such as math calculations, unit conversions, weather forecasts, distance to somewhere, etc are well done. Asking her to always use metric measures (vs imperial) done perfectly. Asking for mood music is flawless. Pleasant surprise was showing the grandkids how to ask, and they spent all afternoon asking what every animal in the world sounds like (til it started driving me crazy). Go complex and you're pushing her limits. I've read the reviews about Home's limitations and the reviews about its improvements, and I have not yet configured to other devices. It's a bit pricey as a toy but a good way to take baby steps towards voice activating the home. So far, so good.

Love it - great integration

Great Device. Linked it with my Smart Things Hub so i can control the lights and thermostat. Easy setup. Too bad it only syncs 100% with free gmail accounts. Some features don't work for paid G-Suite Accounts. I wish this was told to me earlier. I had to share some calendars and move some around but it works great. has a 3 month trial for google play music. but as a warning, it can be addictive. It links with the chromecasts and all. I love this.

Life hands free!

I have my Google Home (GH) for over a week now and I am really enjoying it. I bought 3 smart lamps (Philips Hue) and GH operates them perfectly. I am lazy with music: I don't like creating playlists and maintaining them. GH is very handy in that way, it suffice to tell the name of the singer, or band, or even the style of music, and GH plays it for me. It will find what I want either on my google play account or on TuneIn Radio app. I have two kids that are constantly fighting over the TV; they never agree on what to watch. Now, with GH and chrome cast, I switch between their favorites cartoons on Netflix and set a timer for 20 minutes for each cartoon, all with 3 voice commands (stop - play Moana on Netflix - set timer for 20 minutes). It is way faster then doing it manually and I can keep on doing the dishes, for example. I don't need to stop, wash my hands, take the remote control and do the several steps required to change the cartoons (Netflix is a little sluggish here). It is important to mention that I am not a native English speaker and GH understands me perfectly. Finally, concerning the installation of GH, Chrome Cast and 3 Philips Hue smart lamps, it took me less than half an hour to get it all set. Very intuitive. The only downside is that It didn't let me change its name to "Jarvis". I wanted to be a bit more like Tony Stark, but I guess I'll just have to became a billionaire instead :)

"it really ties the room together"

Picks up myself and my roommates voices from waaaay across the room, speaker has great clarity, works 97% of the time. Have it set up to two TV's and my lights, works like a charm! Ask it what a blue whale sounds like! I like the fact that it can add things to my calendar based on my voice, but can detect my girlfriend's voice and differentiate so it interacts with her Google account and not mine. I am very satisfied with this product!

Works very well

This product works very well with WEMO products and others listed. I'm impressed with what it can do and how easy it is to receive information when you speak to it. Do you really need one? NO. However for the decent price I'm happy I bought one and I'm sure others will feel the same!

More than I expected

I thought the novelty would wear off but this little thing has done more than I expected. It has replaced my alarm clock and my AVR + stereo speakers for music/radio listening. The sound is obviously not better than my AVR setup but the convenience of being able to play/pause whatever music I'm in the mood for solely by voice including volume levels + the reduction in footprint space wins out. Plus it doesn't sound bad at all. More than sufficient for easy background listening. The sound is a little bass forward and hopefully that will be remedied by an equalizer setting in the future. My top uses are: weather updates, playing music, playing radio, alarm clock, getting answers to questions. Again, the biggest plus is that it's all hands free. Like your very own Jarvis. Have not had any problems with Google not hearing me and it has surprised me more of what it can do rather than what it can't do (yet). Hands free calling feature and casting to Android TV don't work in Canada yet.

It's ok

My friend has Alexa, and I have yet to see it fail. Google Home is cool, but it won't control my lights consistently. I could turn on my hue lights from the app, and I could turn on some of the lights from Google Home. It was not consistent, and last night I got a "there must be a glitch, try again in a few moments" about 5 times before I turned off the lights via the hue app. The sound is good in my opinion though I have read reviews that said it wasn't. I was pleasantly surprised by the sound. It does give my calendar appointments, tells jokes, plays trivia games all consistently. If it worked my lights as consistently, I'd be happy with it.

Good but still need improvements

I have purchased this for my geeky self. I enjoy it but I can see that it still needs improvement to get to the enterprise computer level ;) I have configured it first in English and later changed it to French. It woks good in both languages but when asking for English bands when device is set to French is a little painful (asked for The Police, and it understood de police and couldn't find the music station. But in general it's fun to request stuff vocally, and it works better than the phone to understand requests. The possible game changer might be the Google assistant new app coming eventually.
