Various subtle flaws overpower the pros

While this laptop has a ton of great features (graphics, 2 in 1, memory, etc)., I found so many issues with it: - Trackpad feels cheap and sometimes doesn't respond well (it also made a weird clicking sound when I would gently scroll. And no, I was not pressing it down like a button) - Text would appear fuzzy and blurred in some programs - Keyboard is not backlit, even though Best Buy states it does - International keyboard has an awful layout where it cuts off 2 very important keys (SHIFT and ENTER). I could not get accustomed to these changes. Also, Best Buy shouldn't be misleading this product by showing images of an American keyboard instead of an International keyboard. The above reasons are why I will be returning this laptop.

Minor drawbacks are easily remedied.

A good budget laptop which represents great value for money. Pros: Excellent processing speed, amazing memory for cost. The keyboard is a HUGE plus for the touch typist who likes minimal key travel and good feel for struck keys. I love being able to switch between touch screen and mouse for convenience, and am really pleased at the convenience of this laptop for mobile use when giving small-team presentations. Cons: Overheats quickly. I recommend a usb cooling pad for laptop mode. God-awful touchpad, use a wireless mouse. Outside of this, a perfect machine for the price.

Good quality with a few (minor) drawbacks

PROS: - Over-performs for its price point - Great graphics and memory - 2 in 1 functionality is ideal: tablet function is intuitive and doesn't require you to hold the keyboard as 360 laptops would - Comfortable keyboard, although it took me a couple of days to get the hang of the bilingual keyboard - Ideal size and weight for a grad student who needs to carry a computer to and from school, work, and home CONS: - Sometimes freezes while gaming - Trackpad malfunctions a couple times per day and becomes erratic with a mind of its own (luckily, F7 turns off the trackpad and I can use the touchscreen when this happens) - The body has a cheap paint which chips easily; I've been exceedingly careful and have used a sleeve since day one to no avail OVERALL: - Good purchase for an urban planning student who needs to run AutoCAD and ArcGIS - 2 in 1 function is great for presenting work to others - Ideal laptop for sketching/design - The drawbacks are annoying but minor

So far great

Nice display, snappy performance. Enough ports: 3 standard USB, 1 HDMI, plus a USB-C port. The tablet mode works well. Quite stylish. Wasn't loaded with much junk software. I'm very pleased so far.

Satisfied with everything except the mousepad

Great product. No problems with the speed or memory. Easy to use, and comfortable. The mousepad is horrendous - easy to fix by using a different mouse, but it can verge on nearly useless. It can be overly sensitive and then completely non-responsive. I appreciate that ACER wants to have users look into their special ACER cloud hosting, but adding additional bloatware is, to me as a user, infuriating. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the purchase, but both of those issues limit this from being a 5.

Works well, no issues

For the price this laptop is a great deal. The SSD drive is a must have for good performance. I've had mine for almost a year. Its fast, and reliable. no complaints.

Fast and powerful

I was looking for a laptop to work as a software developer and this one has yet to disappoint. Quick bootup sequenece, efficient work and quite capable. The only issues I have with it are related to the way Windows 10 operates.

This covetable laptop is great for the price but the screen is not bright enough and text can be fuzzy some times, other then these issues I love it just be aware if purchasing the r14 that those are my two complaints

Everything I wanted

I've had this laptop for 11 months now. I love it. My previous computer was a 2010 Macbook Pro. The specs I wanted when I was shopping for a new PC were: -portable/tablet modes -full HD touchscreen display -SSD -solid battery life This laptop gives me everything. The only problem I had, I quickly found a way to resolve via Google. The trackpad was sort of glitchy but that was caused by some preloaded Windows 10 app. After deleting that app, I've encountered no problems with this PC.

"runs into a problem"

It sounds like the review about this computer are mixed; some people love it and some people receive 'lemons.' I bought this laptop for work and since day one, it has been a pain. I thought I would stick with it to see if things would get better but I should have returned it while I still could. The track pad does not work very well; sometimes I have to wait a few minutes before the track pad starts working. The computer "runs into a problem" very frequently, maybe three or four times a week, which has resulted in the loss of countless hours of work; I've owned this computer for about four months now and I am going to just buy a new one. If you want a reliable computer I would not buy this one. After reviewing other people's reviews, it sounds like there are too many people who are dissatisfied with this computer and I would not chance buying it. On the surface it seems like a good price for the hardware that you get, which is why I bought it; however, I would not buy it again.

great deal

Great specs and functionality based on the price, especially when on sale. Bad reviews seem to be issues right out of the box, mine has worked fine. A lot of bloatware but it's easily removed. Tent mode is convenient while at the kitchen table, regular laptop mode is great with backlit keyboard, and full on tablet mode is a little awkward with the keyboard flipped around but it does work. Seems to be quick at performing tasks but I haven't done any heavy duty video editing or anything too intensive yet. I've had for 2 days and basically had it set up (removed unwanted apps, updated Windows, merged email and calendars, pointed to my NAS for photo/video/music) within a few hours.

Excellent machine with this price!

I used to work at bestbuy, this laptop is by far the best laptop when considering the price! But the thing is, you need to know why are you buying this laptop; For everyday users and advanced office this laptop is the best, we had one of the lowest return rate for this product

Great Laptop / tablet

Had a Samsung Note 9 (which I loved), but it started to have problems after 3 years. I thought I'd have difficulties finding a replacement, and I was hesitant but this turned out to be a jewel. For it's price range, it has all the bells and whistles. As a programmer, I was looking for something 'fast enough', but not outrageously expensive and the Acer fills that need very well. Viewing Netflix movies, etc... the screen is fabulous. It's not nearly as cumbersome as my old Samsung when reading at night when the touchscreen screen is folded over. All in all... a great find! :)

Quick, fast, but finicky screen.

On the PLUS side: - fast - SSD is great! Never going back to HDD - temperature is nice and cool - very low noise (small fan) - size is perfect for everyday use - backlight screen is very useful - very thin, and pretty light - touchpad is big On the MINUS side: - screen is finicky: sometimes text is fuzzy, sometimes it's not - strange glitches sometimes appear, especially when moving the screen - Microsoft Office is not pre-installed - Bluetooth devices sometimes connect, sometimes do not - touchpad is very sensitive - some annoying bloatware needs to be uninstalled

Love it!

PROS -Backlight keyboard -SSD (a game changer: I'm never going back to HDD!): quick OS loading, silent running, no noisy fan, no overheating -Pre-loaded with everything I need, no lenghty setup -Touch-screen is a big bonus -For all these features, the price is good (on sale) CONS -A bit on the heavy side -Screen looks a bit fuzzy, text is not too sharp and crisp -Adaptor is the flimsiest I've ever seen on a laptop

Terrible Quality

I'd give this piece of junk a zero star rating if I could. Bought it, took it home and plugged it in as per the instructions. Let it charge fully and it will not power on. Resetting the battery does nothing. Terrible quality. Will buy an HP or ASUS instead. Avoid Acer unless you want headaches and return hassles.

Wished it were better!

This laptop seemed perfect on paper- great RAM, a solid state drive, good battery life, not too heavy, all the bells and whistles PLUS it was a touch pad... but the graphics are awful. Had it for one day and my icons were all low res and texts were blurry. Called Acer help who eventually had me delete the graphics drive, which then made my laptop reset. It was never able to restart, so I sent it back. Best Buy then took nearly two weeks to refund the credit. Will search elsewhere for a laptop for me, sadly a little heart broken about the one that should have done it all!

Great Laptop / tablet

The sixth gen Intel icore 5 combined with the SSD is lightning fast. Start up time is less than 3 seconds and programs load even faster. Crystal clear HD screen and great sound from the speakers. The touchscreen works very well and can works seamlessly with the touchpad when you're using it as a laptop. Equally as good as a Mac and about [price] cheaper. Highly recommended.

acer aspire issues

Issues with playing movies or shows on netflix. The screen will freeze out (usually within the first hour) but the sound will keep playing. If I pick up the laptop and move it, it sometimes will just shut down. This all happened on the very first day I got the computer. Removed all the junk programs and rebooted but still experience the same issues. it is not a server issue as our other laptop has no issues playing netflix.

Good laptop, Great Value

This is the forth Acer product at our home. I bought these machines (3 laptop, one tablet) in a 4 years time frame. Here is my feedback after a week of playing with R14: - good overall product at a great price point. - Not so much good keyboard and track pad, but no deal breaker for me. - The only thing that I can't stand is smudge and this laptop shows it all over because of the black material used inside out. Looking for a solution now.

Excellent for price

Purchased as an inexpensive standby but so much more! PROS: Price (especially with i5 and 8/256G memory) Fast processor and memory Excellent screen keyboard feel excellent 3 USB ports, full size HDMI Solid construction, materials and hinges appear top tier Very cool running Excellent sound quality and volume for size Excellent battery life CONS Crashed a few times (not lately) Little laggy sometimes after start up (more so than my old Vaio. Pro 13) A little on heavy side but not at price Things that would improve vastly without increasing price: 1. Make available in Canada US rather than bilingual keyboard (as HP now does) 2. SD Card sticks out - unlike my old Vaio. Pro 13 which inserts flush (can be used to extend in computer storage) 3. Power cord connector to computer is really "skinny" and I wonder about long term reliability No ultrabook can compete with this one on price - if you are willing to carry an extra pound.

I was not a big fan of Acer. However, this model is very different. The build quality is great and the ssd drive reduces the booth time to 10 sec. Had it for 3 wreks now and no issues at all. The screen is bright and at 1080p you have a clear image.

Aspire R 14

Just over 2 weeks now. Bought a Bluetooth mouse because of the poor reviews on the trackpad. That is where the problem started. Bluetooth just would not stay connected to the mouse or any Bluetooth device. The manager of the geek squad was good enough to look at it and had to download a more updated driver from the Acer website. It was not an easy process for any average person to do. Why would they sell a machine with a driver that won't even work with an ordinary mouse or Bluetooth speaker. So far all is good now. Otherwise love the machine. Fast, lots of memory for me. Just hope going with Acer over the next few years will prove to be a good decision. Great value for the price.

Review after one week

Great laptop except for a few things....the biggest one being the trackpad. It seems to run fine whenever it wants. Other times, very finicky. Considering returning the unit because of this one problem(apparently it i common for these). Got a blue screen saying encountered problems and it restarted. Blue screen hasnt come back since. And also, the charger for for this unit has a very thing cheap cable. I can tell right now, this thing will need to be replaced after a year or two As for the good...everything else about this laptop is good. The build quality is solid, the screen is great, touch is very accurate and responsive. Battery life is amazing. Been using it for roughly an hour for light web browsing and still shows 6.5 hours of battery life left. Nice backlit keyboard with soft touch. Shortcuts for volume and brightness build into direction keys which is so much more convenient than the F keys. SSD makes startup lightening fast (maybe 4 or 5 seconds?). Very thin sleek design. Fix your trackpad ACER!!!! You almost had a perfect little machine here.

Great Value with good quality

Got my Thinkpad Laptop stolen, but I had to quickly get over my grieve and find an replacement laptop. I shopped and tried different laptop within my tight budget yet it must have good quality (Like all consumers), and finally landed on this one. i5, SSD, Full HD Screen, sleek look, good build quality, R14 fulfilled my needs. As adding bonus, it has the cool 360 degree hinge and function, plus Dolby Audio. Better then a Zenbook.

Love Mt Acer

Had a 11.5'' Acer that I had to replace after 6 years of daily use but the track pad started acting up. Was hoping for another 11.5" aluminum body but sadly they do not make them anymore. Purchased this on as the next best option. Great laptop for speed of processing and ease of use. the only draw backs I found to it so far is I wish the keyboard was a bit larger (not the end of the world) but bigger issue is the unit can not be rolled back to windows 7 (Talked to Acer and no drivers are available for this CPU and window 7) this is why I only gave it 4 stars. other than that great unit.

Great price and quality

My original choice is HP Spectre x360 13.3" Touchscreen Convertible Laptop, but this Acer has the same features (a bit bigger) and it is a lot cheaper, so I decided to give it a try. I have been using the laptop for over 2 weeks. It is fast and stable. Some reviews said that the colour is not as bright as other laptops. Since I don't use for photo editing, I am satisfied with the quality. The downside is that it is a bit heavy for a convertible. The mouse pad is not very easy to use. In general, it is a very good laptop.

Well worth the money

Did alot of research and bought this on special [price]. great value for the money. The SSD drive is fast and the all around specs for this machine are great. Other choices for a convertible laptop are at least 300 more and for lessor specs. The machine runs very cool, and quiet which is usually a concern. AC wifi is quick for downloads and it streams well. The AC adapter is also very small and light, which is great for travel. There is a bit of bloatware, but its easily uninstalled. The only con is there are a couple of smaller size keys on the keyboard that are taking some getting used to (left shift & enter)

Do not buy Acer Laptops!

I had two Acer laptops work flawlessly for 13 months, and then like a light switch, they both died. Both had unfixable motherboard issues, and the repairs would = the cost of a whole replacement! I tried out this baby (yes, stupid me) for 5 days and although it felt good to use, remembered my past issues and really felt the quality out this time. Loose (and therefore breakable) connection ports were noticed right away. Do NOT trust the attention that goes into connecting anything on their machines to their motherboards, I feel this company makes their computers with VERY little attention to quality control. The fact that Acer still sells, due to their low pricing, shows how little their defective products have been openly tested past a year. IF you need a computer cheap and fun and capable of working for 12 months, Acer is it. IF you want an investment, please look elsewhere.

Versatile and well built

I have used this product for three months and I am very pleased with my purchase. It seems to be well constructed (despite what other reviews seem to indicate) and I love the versatility it offers. Good speakers; good display; acceptably fast for day to day use (not a gaming machine); excellent WIFI reception; fast boot-up and good features such as back-lit key pad. Touch screen is good. I use it primarily as a laptop but also as a media streamer for music and movies. As a tablet, it is a bit heavy and I actually find the screen too large to use comfortably but it is nice to have that option available. One issue was the documentation refers to a special port adapter to hook up to LAN and monitor. I ordered the item specified directly from Acer but it did not fit. After contacting ACER technical support and being bounced around a couple times I was able to get a full refund. I would highly recommend this product based on my experience.

A phenomenal laptop

I researched exhaustively for weeks before deciding on this laptop. Dollar for dollar, there is NO other laptop/convertible on the market that tops the R14. The first thing you will notice when you unwrap it is the build. On the outside, the brushed black metal is striking, and feels fantastic to the touch. That continues when you life the lid. The bottom of the unit gets a soft touch plastic treatment, which is also nice in the hand, if it does lack the full metal jacket of some of the competition. At this price point, it's absolutely forgivable. The display is a sharp full HD panel, but as others, and all online reviews state, it is NOT the brightest panel on the market by any means. It is on the dim side. I haven't had any issues with it personally, but your experience may vary. The keyboard has a fairly shallow travel, but the spacing is very nice. It's also a personal pet peeve - because in Canada we get the international layout instead of a standard US setup. The short left Shift key and addition of a second \| key absolutely baffles me to this day. But I don't fault Acer for this - almost every manufacturer has been doing it. The backlighting is nice, with two levels of brightness. If you've never had a backlit keyboard, you might not understand why that even matters, but trust me, it's a nice feature to use in a dim/dark room. Once it's fired up, you'll find quite a lot of pre-installed software. (aka "bloatware") I'm sure someone out there MIGHT find it useful, but most of it is a one-way trip to uninstalling. As for boot times, it's FAST. Power off to lock screen runs 13-15 seconds, on average. Logged in and desktop ready in under 30 altogether. I love that. Programs like Photoshop, notorious for long load times with an HDD, are launched and ready in just a few seconds. The i5 processor/8GB RAM/SSD combination is flat out phenomenal. The weakest point of the whole system is likely the Intel 520 integrated graphics - but it's standard in pretty much every other device in this category. Unless you find something with a discrete graphics card included, this is as good as it gets. The SSD inside is a Liteon model, and gets great read/write speeds. CrystalDiskMark tops out around 550MB/s read and 360MB/s write. Sure, there are faster SSDs on the market, but you're going to pay one heck of a price for minimal additional gains. Most people probably don't have USB 3.1/Type C accessories yet - but it's great having that port there for future expansion. I've added an Aukey Type C to USB 3/gigabit ethernet hub, and it works great. Oh yeah - don't forget that if you use/need a WIRED internet connection, you are going to need a USB ethernet adapter! There is none built-in. In just over a week, I've found my average battery life to run 7 to 9 hours of mixed usage. That includes Office work, graphics, surfing, and watching videos - as well as software installations and configurations. I almost forgot to touch on the 2-in-1 aspect! Admittedly, it wasn't a selling point for me initially. Now I'm not sure I could go back to a standard laptop. Display mode is nice for watching videos on your lap, and the tablet mode I find incredibly useful with Office documents! Open them up in Word, flip to tablet/portrait mode, and you essentially get a full page view - like looking at a sheet of actual paper. Easy to pass around to show others. Also nice for reading long articles on the internet! To sum it all up, if you're looking for a speedy, portable little workhorse, the R14 is pretty much a must-buy. Light, thin, powerful, with great battery life and enough ports to add additional peripherals. Full disclosure - the first one I received was defective. It suffered from random locks/freezes with absolutely no error messages whatsoever. So I'm basing my 5 stars on the replacement unit, not the original one. Defects happen. I'm just lucky that mine was out of the box so I was within the 14 day retu

Decent

i've been using this for about a month ... the specs are great for the money - SSD (faster and less heat), ok battery life, backlit keyboard, very serviceable i5 processor, good size/weight, touchscreen (which I found more useful than first thought). The drawbacks in my opinion are: thick bezels, some of the keys on the keyboard are cramped (left shift, and arrow keys come straight to mind), and the display isn't the best. Overall I'm pretty satisfied, and would give a higher ranking if it not for 1 dead pixel which isn't covered under warranty, and the touchpad sometimes not working properly after changing from tablet mode to keyboard mode.
