You pride yourself in your DIY skills, but some days, it's great to take the brainwork out of making things work the way you want them to. Take for example the WiFi-enabled Belkin WeMo light switch. It's so easy to use, you're tempted to swap all your house lights with smart WeMo LED bulbs (sold separately).
You can already hear the oohs and aahs every time your lights just turn on or fade away slowly of their own volition. With a "wave" of your smartphone or tablet, you can discreetly set the ambience when the occasion calls for it, or better yet, program your lights to follow the rise and setting of the sun. Among many cool things the WeMo light switch can do, it can also direct your porch lights to turn on or off at the opportune time.
Ain't that a bright idea.

Works well with Amazon echo. A little bulky for our light switch box but got eveything in there. Now if only Alexa can play well above the 49th!
I have installed few of these in my house. Excellent product to control your household light of fans remotely or to automate them to turn them on/off as per schedule. Easy to configure and reconfigure. App is easy to use and setup scheduling rules. Now I don't have to worry about turning off the shower exhaust fan 40-60 minutes after I am done shower. The rule setup in the box takes care of it. No more electricity wastage if you forget to switch off the exhaust fan if you are leaving in a hurry. I can turn the light on/off from anywhere in the world.
Only con of the switch is that it is bulky for a single switch box. It can not fit in that. It can be installed easily in a box meant for 2 or more switches.
So far I've enjoyed using the switch, please be sure though before you install it that you have enough room for it in your switch box. The thumbnail picture of the switch neglects to really show you the back and how big it is. Other than that it's awesome to be able to set up rules for your lights and be able to integrate some IFTTT functionality in with geofences.
Bought two of these from on-line BestBuy.ca last Thursday, April 14th and received them via Canada Post the very next day.
Physical installation was easy (I did have a neutral (white) wire in the electrical box). It doesn't have to be a single box either - mine had another decora-style switch beside it and everything went well. You do need a deep box though.
I had no difficulty for the router to see it either (ASUS RT-AC5300). Got 'the app' from the Google store and downloaded it in a few moments. Ran the app and could 'see' the light Belkin lights witch. Tried it and while it took a few moments to find the switch, it worked well excepting that when the switch was toggled, the app hung - whether turning if on or turning it off.
While in the middle of trying to solve this issue (of it working but ending badly for the app), got notification of a new update. Ran it and the trouble just went away. It now works well with no apparent problems.
I really like it and it solved a difficult switching problem for me. It looks great alongside similar white decora switches and it works great too.
Great switch, easy install although you need a deep enough box for installation to fit all wires and large switch . Should measure width and depth of old switch box before buying. Can't be used on dual control or dimmer switch setups ,but hopefully that comes in future. Easy setup on android phone and works well on timer and manual remote switching. Appearance is also good. Have used it for 1 month now with no issues except for an update that needed to be done on install. Customer service was great on guiding through update. Bought this one through Best Buy with no issues. Shipment was fast.
Bought 2 of these when they were on sale after Boxing Day . I had no problem getting them to work and love using the sunset & sunrise feature. Would definitely recommend!
I've had these for quite some time now. Infant, I have several now. They work quite well. They provide many use options from timed to manual use. They are particular convenient where 2 switches operating a single light are difficult to wire.
Set up is fairly simple. My one conplaint is that sometimes the response time isn't quite as quick as I would like. That said, the latest software update seemed to remedy much of that.
The product functions exactly how you would expect it to, but I purchased one to control my exterior lights at my HOME, and one to control my exterior lights at my COTTAGE, only to find out you CANNOT control 2 separate light switches at 2 separate addresses off of 1 app on 1 phone - For example, this type of setup would require you to have your HOME light switch on one device (your phone) and the COTTAGE switch on a separate device (your iPad, or another phone).
So far our experience has been positive, it is great to be able to control the lights remotely it is better than the old fashioned timers easier to change the scedhule within the app.
We just bought another one, it would be nice to see the 3 way switch option in the future
This switch is installed in the same manner as any standard single-pole switch.
I also have the Belkin netcam so was expecting to use the same app. That caused me a bit of fiddling before I realized that there are separate 'netcam' and 'wemo' apps. The connection with the wemo app went smoothly and 3 weeks in I have yet to experience even a glitch.
I was thinking that it would be nice to have one app for both the netcam and other wemo devices since they use the same protocol. Then to my pleasant surprise after a week or so the netcam suddenly appeared on the wemo app. My phone now has the 'netcam' app initially installed when purchasing the camera and the 'wemo' app with which I can monitor both devices. I would still need the 'netcam' app in the event that connections need to be reconfigured.
Belkin WeMo Wi-Fi Light Switch are much more economical than buying the single plug in units or lightbulbs. You also don't need a hub control them you simply just added an app to your iPhone and is very easy to use.
Con: It does not work on 3way switches.
Light switch will only register to one mobile device, and if you want to register it to a new smartphone or tablet, you need to completely reset the light switch. Furthermore my switch completely died shortly after the warranty ran out. It also does not integrate with other systems like wink hub. No dimming function either. Better of getting something else.
Works very nice. Sunset lights turn on. Sunrise lights turn off. Never have to set a timer again.
Bought two of these guys to use in various places around the house. Turns out my house doesn't have many boxes with neutral wires in them which are required for this switch to work. Luckily, my front porch did. Install the switch, used the Wemo app to set it up and everything worked flawless. The rules for setting the switch off/on aren't really any different than my home security system. Quite easy once you get used to them.
Who needs timers when there's a product like this available.
Was looking for a timer for the outside lights and came across this device.
Very impressed. Can set to come on at sunset and shut down anytime you want including sunrise.
Set up is easy for those technically inclined. May need a bit of internet help otherwise. Been operating for about 5 months now with no problems. Device continues normally without any input after power failure.
Easy to install. but took a while to connect it to internet.Once it was set up the challenge was to understand the rules. The instructions are not very clear,I did not realize some rules turn on and off while others only turn on or off. I lost my internet & got another router. I gave it a new SSID and could not get switch to work so switched back to original name. I never could connect to the switch network, but with old SSID and password the switch was visible to WeMo app.
Help says we can reset switch but I found no way to do that. One day the App lost connection to the switch. It ended up working After I switched circuit breaker on & off
This has great potential but there are still a few bugs to work out. I have upgraded switch firmware a few times since so perhaps some problems are fixed.I am still not able to connect to the switch network but my lights are working according to my rules.
Install was very easy. works great. Love the sunset feature where it will automatically determine sunset/sunrise times from where you live to turn off/on. Only 4 stars for now as don't know how reliable it is yet.
PS woks only with 1 pole switch, can use a 3 way switch but need to disable the other switch.
Purchased this on Saturday, installed it in 15 mins no problems. Issue started when I tried to get it on my network, it would not take the password even if I removed security. It kept saying to check my password on the router.. well it turns out that this device will not accept an SSID that has more then 1 capital so i changed my SSID to all lowercase and it worked just fine. I'm still testing the rules for turning off and on and has works ok so far.
Friends of ours had their house broken in to the other night via the garage when a thief got access to the garage door opener from an unlocked vehicle.
Our garage door opener has a power over-ride switch, where you can shut down the power to the opener. Sure, "locking" the garage door like this when you leave on holidays is easy, but doing that every night isn't likely to keep on happening. This switch and the settings in the iPhone app make powering down your garage door opener overnight automatic.
Nice tool, great form factor and a breeze to install and configure the iPhone app. No other hardware is required, no base station, no extra wiring or settings on my WiFi router. It just works, which is a nice change to how so many technologies seem to work.
I like the switches, good replacements for the old timers. Terrible app, almost unusable. Found WemoManager on google play which saved the switches going back to bb. Instant on and off - just like real switches! And rules that actually work.
I have had mine for well over a year now, when I first got it the app was not so great and it would disappear from app, over time the app was improved greatly. Now the app works flawless and instantly and have not had any problems. I will be purchasing more of these as I like the option of setting them to come on and ff when you want them too, and you can check on your lights when you are away.
The switch does the job well, lights up and down manually or through the phone app (in my case am using the Android version APP). WiFi reception signal is good and WiFi AP can be on a different floor, without any issue (in my case it is an ASUS 8 antenna router). Switch works with IFTTT or native wemo app allows basic schedule actions.
Android app interface requires work though. Takes around 10 seconds to load the pre-configured switch and for you to be allowed action, which is much when you want light quite away. A 3 seconds load time would be acceptable. But it allows you to remote control the switches locally through your WiFi AP, or through the Internet, far far away from a distant galaxy (as long as you have Internet there).
WEMO is now part of the SMART THINGS collective, where you can use the SMART Thing hub for central control.
I more than 5 of those switches from WEMO "Light", "Insight" and "switch" (those are three different models here).
Simple to install and works.
Does not work for two way light switches.
You set separate rules for enabling or disabling the switch. Also allows for location based timing for on-off functionality.
Have had no problems with app either.
Works as expected. love the ability to turn on and off light switches from the phone app or on a timer. I have 4 of these products installed
I bought this light switch and it works really well. Installation was easy enough but I can see how someone without any electrical knowledge can get frustrated really fast. I will be buying more of these to automate as much of the house as possible.
The wifi range was never an issue. My router is in the basement and the light switch is one floor up.
great idea but very unreliable - constantly dropping WIFI and disappears from your APP
I picked up this switch when it was on sale this week, thinking I was taking a chance on something that I probably didn't actually need. But I'm glad that I bought it. It's very cool. I installed the app on my iPhone (iOS 8.1) and on a tablet with an older version of android. I've read some negative things about the app, but both work well. My wifi router is two floors above where the switch is and I have no problems at all.
The thing I really like about the switch is that, with the app, you can set a timer to come on or off whenever you like. There is even a sunrise / sunset setting. The app asks you for the city where you live, so that it knows exactly when sunrise and sunset will be. Then you can choose how many minutes before sunrise or sunset you want the light to come on. It's very flexible and I'll be happy to have it whenever we go on vacation.
The only problem that I have with this product is that I think I want to buy more.
I have been using WeMo switch for about a year now to control outside lights in my detached garage. Installation was easy, but you need a neutral wire. Getting it onto the wifi network was a bit tricky, but I think that mostly had to do with wifi strength. In that area of my garage the wifi was showing 1-2 bars on my iPhone and I struggled to get the WeMo to connect. I knew I needed better reception for other uses and added a repeater to my network. Once I had decent wifi signal the pairing became simple and have no issues with the switch. Overall very stable product. I use the schedule feature a lot for night time lights to come on. All easy to do on the iPhone app . This app has been stable and works very well. This is the only WeMo device I have. My house is 70 years old and lacks neutrals at other spots. For this reason I am planning to use z-wave for other switches ( some of these don't require a neutral) plus it opens up a world of other devices to control. The good thing is most z-wave controllers will also control WeMo switches. It is a bit tricky to get it working on my Vera controller, but I am new at that front and have not really had time to figure it out. Other then seeing other users getting the WeMo to work without issues on Vera through internet searches. For now I use the WeMo app and then hope to get it all in the Vera app eventually. If I had more neutral wires I would buy another no problem. One suggestion for Belkin is to make a switch with a dimmer switch. Unless I just missed that one.
It's a great concept and works well most of the time. At times, the App has trouble finding the device, but I do have the switch pretty far from my medium quality router. I wish there was a web-based App also, instead of using an iOS or Android device every time. Also, it would be nice to have a key chain remote and/or wall mounted wireless switches. I'm sure Belkin will improve the technology and provide more accessories over time. I will probably buy more.
I buy products regardless of reviews. There are so many people trolling and reviewing products they haven't even purchased. Then there are people who just don't understand the product. We bought two of Belkin's WeMo products, the Light Switch and the Switch and we couldn't be happier. We have had ZERO issues, no disconnections, NO issues with the app connecting. In fact, we have decided to buy more light switches in the future. The "Turn on at Sunset" feature is sweet and then we program the timer to turn the one lamp off at a certain time. For those of you being cautious due to poor reviews, you have to realize there were issues in the beginning (as expected) but Belkin is constantly working on their app and constantly updating the firmware on the devices. It gets better and better.
I've read the reviews and I still purchase two units installed and happy with the results, my front porch lights come on/off as they suppose to and my basements lights are never left on anymore by my forgetful teenagers I love this product.
The app that controls the switch, as others have stated, is poor at best. Most of the times the app just doesn't work and it's not intuitive. For example it doesn't really explain what "Away" mode means and how it works. Belkin really needs to improve the app.
Despite the less than stellar reviews here, I read other more positive reviews elsewhere so I went ahead and bought several (both outlet and wall Switches). I had no trouble with installation and mobile app set-up on iPhone, iPad and Samsung Galaxy S4 - even with a quick firmware update. IFTTT works flawlessly too. Very happy with the product and the iOS and Android mobile apps. I have since recommended both products to friends who have had the same positive experience. My only gripe is that they are expensive .
I like the switch but the software to support it is buggy and not well developed. Not designed for tablets and both IOS and Android apps are poorly developed and when working, barely does what you need.
I bought two of these despite the mixed reviews I have seen hoping my level of knowledge with computers and electrical would allow me to control my experience with the product. I was sadly mistaken. The control software on android is one of the worst pieces of software I have ever seen and every second of using it was frustrating. I did however get it to detect them and was able to turn lights on and off, sort of, when the stars aligned just perfectly. I even moved my access point to create a direct line of sight with no more than 20feet distance and the switches still were useless 95% of the time. Thankfully bestbuy gave me my money back without any issues. I personally will not be buying belkin products anymore.
Switch is good so far. But software is terrible. ...
I purchased two of these, and have installed one of them to control my outdoor Christmas lights. Their outdoor outlet is controlled by a switch. I could have instead just used a time, but I'm a geek so...
The installation didn't take very long. The instructions are clear. The longest part was finding the breaker switch to turn off. However, there's a couple of little things that can be problematic.
Firstly, the device is quite a bit larger than a normal switch assembly. As such, once you use the included connectors for the wires, there really isn't much room in a standard box. I tried a bunch of times to find the right position, but I have failed to get the device to sit flush. As a result, the cover looks awkward (it sits out about a quarter inch on one side). Luckily, the switch is in a closet. I will probably go back and try again later. This may be less of a problem if placing the device inside a larger multi-switch enclosure.
Secondly, the connectivity doesn't seem to always fire with the WeMo rules. Once in a while, the lights don't turn on according to the rules. Easy enough to fix by tapping the switch. I wonder if the WiFi reception is poor for the device since it sits in a closet?
You can get pretty creative with the rules, and tie it in with location data, time of day, sunrise/set triggers etc. Pretty happy with the functionality, but have to sort out the space issues. Glad I bought it.
We've incorporated US Best Buy's customer reviews so you have access to as many reviews as possible to help with your purchasing decision.
