I got my computer from the Geek Squad in Best Buy. The guy who sold it to me assured me it was better than the Lenovo laptop I was looking to pick up for my mum that day (which was sold out all across Ontario, go figure). I looked it over, but he had no floor models so I couldn't play with it at all... mainly my mum only needs it to go online and browse the internet, so it's not like I was shopping for a power house machine... but this thing cant even do what its designed to do, let alone go online! I trusted the sales guy, seeing as he's supposed to know what he's talking about, and like an idiot I bought it.
So, how shitty was this laptop when I got it home?
1. It felt SO CHEAP... essentially an empty plastic casing with loose buttons and a screen that always looks like you're looking at it from the wrong angle.
2. The scrolling does not work (it only scrolls one direction, the other direction just jumps up and down the page sporadically).
3. It does even connect to WiFi (no I'm not joking or exaggerating, it legitimately says it "does not have the hardware" to connect to the internet).
4. The windows START MENU doesn't even open... actually, the whole task bar at the bottom doesn't function at all!
5. Opening ONE tab on chrome used up 64% of the computers ram... and it was just to look at a page to find out why my start menu wasn't working (aka: just a page of text).
6. After running hours of scans and diagnostics to try and see why nothing was working, some scans found errors and offered no solutions, and others said "everything is dandy!"... yet, it still doesn't work.
7. The track pad click functions once out of every 10 clicks... or angry keyboard mashes.
Needless to say its going back in the box and returned within less than 24 hours of owning it. Total garbage.
As the write-up says, this computer is good for emails, word processing, excel, things of that type. It is a low-end, entry level laptop, and is not meant for things like photoshop, other heavy photo editing, perhaps not even video editing.
I run my own business, and while it can be slow to catch up with you, once you've given it time to recognize the webpage/program and its features, it delivers decently. You have to be a little bit patient.
Do not get this if you are expecting something superb - it won't be.
The processor states 1.6 GHz; it can burst up to 2.4 for short periods of time.
As for the questions about upgrading RAM, you can install new RAM with this laptop, but the motherboard is not built to handle it. 4 GB is the max. The next level Dell laptop comes with 8 GB installed.
The webcam is okay. Depending on what program you are using, the quality can vary. If you want to make, edit/produce videos on this, you might want to jump up a level, as mentioned above; it takes time on this device.
If you need a laptop in an emergency to tide you over, and don't mind upgrading the processor and RAM at a later date, this may very well tide you over.
Bonus: the optical drive. This is getting increasingly harder to find.
Overall, it does exactly what it purports to. If you're worried about it failing on you, extend the warranty/get Geek Squad support.
I am returning after spending 1 night and one morning on this thing. It may be a quick turn around, but on my 1st night, I was simply watching a TED Talk with no other programs running, and had considerable glitches and pixelation and freezing in the picture, but the audio wasn't interrupted. Noticed considerable glitches the next time I used it two days later, with a simple window for an update notification glitching and freezing as a white box. Could not get through basic web surfing/reading, so I tried my boyfriend's computer and worked fine - so apparently my internet is not to blame at all. Will be trading it in. I want something decent but affordable for basic surfing for school, but even this won't do.
Slowest computer I ever owned, can't performed the simplest tasks. Very disappointed I don't recommend to anyone got the worse impression from Dell never again.
I bought this for my dad since he needed a new computer just to do minor things like web-browsing and online banking. Seemed promising at first, but overall it was way too slow even just performing the simplest of tasks.Totally disappointed in it. Returned after a few days. I don't recommend this.
I bought this one, then returned it. First of all, the keyboard is very strange--the set-up means I kept on hitting characters instead of the left Shift button and right Enter button. If you're interested in it, try typing something first--a lot of Dell keyboards are like this now. Then, the hard drive crashed--less than a week after I first set it up... Thankfully, Best Buy refunded my money without any hassle.
Love the widescreen, the keyboard has a really nice feel and really like having the number keypad at the side which my previous laptop did not have.
Slim and sleek and lighter than previous laptop. Only had it a couple of weeks but so far so good and very happy with the purchase.
Over all pretty happy with it. Seems to be as goog as my old samsung. I like the dact it had a disc drive. Getting hard to find. Still playing with it. Will know more when school starts.
