Bad as a Baby Monitor

PROS: Setup was easy, video looked great, returning it was easy. CONS: There's no way to disable the video while keeping the audio going - I don't need to creep on my baby all night long, I just want to have a look when there's a noise. Also can't just listen when you're doing anything else on your phone. You open any other program and the baby monitor is gone. Hardware seems great, software was designed VERY poorly.

Not 1080p

So far so good. Installation went well, it works great, including all used apps, but it should be noted that this camera does not record 1080p, it can but it is not utilizing its capacity. It only offers 360p or 720p.

Great baby monitor

We use as a baby monitor. Its nice and discreet with awesome video quality. I love being about to watch our little one from our smartphone when away or from the other room on our tablet. We were very happy with this purchase.

Drop Cam

I like that the camera is 2 way. I don't like that I have to pay $[price]/yr to record but it is still worth it to me. I will probably buy another one.

Monthly subscription required!!! - DEAL BREAKER

The camera is awesome no doubt. great quality, great build, super easy to set, great app, great video quality ect...no, complaints there. The single one and only "deal breaker" is that you require a monthly subscription fee equaling $100/yr and $50/yr for each additional camera. Otherwise, this is just a "live only" cam (expensive baby monitor). If you want to create your motion detection zones and get instant event notifications on your phone and be able to click on the app and go back and see the saved video event...be prepared to pay $100 per year to see this saved video on dropcams cloud service (bandwidth usage alert). I returned mine simply because of this subscription fee nonsense. Looking at the Samsung HD pro instead which has an on board memory card for that local event storage and no monthly fees.

good cam but requires service plan

Quality and design is awesome but the cam requires you pay for a monthly service plan to store / view recordings on their web site. Not possible to hook this cam to a local PC for saving vids locally.

Great camera

I picked up a Dropcam Pro a few weeks ago before going on vacation so I could keep an eye on the basement of my home. I have reno work going on and I thought it would be cool to see what the cat was up to! Having a Nest thermostat I was interested in how the 2 devices would interact. The camera quality is excellent with a very wide field of vision and the night vision is also quite good. Using the Android app is easy and setting up alerts for motion activity was a piece of cake. Setup too was literaly about 2 minutes. One complaint would be the need for Dropcam's subscription service as you will find if you are too late to check on an alert on your phone the app will say the event has passed. With the cloud storage subscription you can check an activity timeline. Live streaming always works as does 2-way audio. My only other comment would be it would be nice to have a local storage option as well. All in all a pretty sweet device, and I am likely to get at least one more. RyanM

Dropcam Pro

I really liked the resolution of the camera and the alngle.They are very good.But in terms of security Dropcam still to work a little be more.We can not save the ,unless if you pay a fee monthly.Does not have a way to insert a memory card.

Dropcam Pro

Assessment: 1) It is easy to setup and configure 2) The quality of picture is average 3) The delivery of alerts is poor 4) The live image is delayed by 3 secs in an internal wireless network 5) The detail of scheduling is limited Comments: It was very easy to setup and start using so easy it really did only take 10 mins. Unfortunately the quality of image was average nothing really sharp you can make everything out but a face from a distance would be hard to make out. The delivery of alerts through email was not great it's an embedded photo. An attachment would have been better and when you click on the link flash is required because it directs you to there site. I was surprised with the delay of live video. I think this is common with all cameras.

Nice but need improvements

Purchased for now one only, however it was working for a few weeks perfectly fine and afterwards started creating the problems such as night vision glare, missing recordings on mobile phone etc. However, I must say they have an excellent tech support and they are quite knowledgeable about the product if you compare them with others. Downsize is the price.

Awesome option for a security camera!!

I set this up in my house as a security camera, and absolutely love it so far!! The picture quality is excellent, and the night vision is great!! I previously used a D-Link DCS-5222L PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) camera for the same purpose, and it doesn't even compare to the Dropcam for ease of setup and use, and LEGIT movement alarm notifications (especially in nightvision mode). Granted, you can't look 360 degrees around the room, but the 130 degrees of sight picture is just fine. I have yet to get a "bogus" notification alarm for movement from this thing as everytime there has, in fact, been motion detected, including it seeing a vehicle drive by outside as I have it overlooking my living room. Surprisingly, not only is the nightvision excellent (no pixelly views) but you're not flooded with notification emails of "movement detected" as my "D-Stink" camera would pick up on the pixelation, and view that as movement. >:( Logging in from either my iPhone or my computer at work is super easy. The app is great, and from a desktop login, you're not clicking "yes" to 5-6 "Do you want java to run?" notifications like the myD-Link site had logging in. Just name, password, hit "Enter" and whatever you have the camera viewing pops right up. The fact you also have the option to have it record 1 week's worth of footage to a virtual server for your eyes only for the same price as a Netflix membership / month (about $7) is also great. Example: Mon-Sun recorded, then following Monday, LAST monday's footage is erased, an so on.... Just before I bought this, I was second guessing myself in the store what to buy with yet another DLink or the Dropcam Pro in my hand. Glad I chose the latter, and I would highly recommend this to anyone in the market for an easy-to-use, high quality security camera / baby monitor!!

Not a single issue

DropCams work exactly as advertised. We now have three Pro models working in and around the house. Not a single problem so far. Playback is HD and night recordings are very good. Would recommend these cameras to anyone.

Works like a charm

I've been waiting for something like this for a while. Sets up easy. I love being able to see my kids play downstairs whether I'm home or not. Even moving it to the main door area when we're away so I can see if everything is ok at the house or how the weather is. All in all. Very happy with this product. Has been up for two weeks and I love the trial feature to watch recorded motion. Great product.

Not Android ready

They imply from the box and from the little install card in the box that this product can be used without a computer and Android. NOT true. If you have an Android phone you can get the Android app but you cannot setup the Dropcam without pluging in to a Windows or Mac computer. Linux doesn't work. So forget about it. Otherwise it's okay. Takes a lot of bandwidth and you can't reduce the size of the streamed image. Can't save to your phone or NAS or Google drive. USB plug is awkward.

Dropcam

It is easy to setup. The service works 95% of the time! Less than 5% of the time it just stops working why .. Is mystery .. But it then so far resets it's self .. Could be a internet provider issue .. I am not sure .. The resolution of the picture does allow you to figure out who is walking around, if you know them and they. Are within four or so feet from camera. We use ours a lot and are pleased with it .. I had purchased others ones, but I could not get them to work ever... This package works well.

5 minute setup. Very very good quality video with two way sound. $99 per year to monitor first camera then $49 per 2nd camera etc. Web and iPhone app work smoothly. Uses a lot of broadband. I wish it was cheaper. I bought 4.

very limiting product - a love/hate device

This product gets a lot of positive reviews, and within a very narrow set of requirements, it can be great. For me it is the most disappointing product I have purchased in a long time. First the good. 1) The image quality is very good in various lighting. That's it. No more good. 1) ALL video gets sent out through the internet before coming back to your house. Besides the creepy factor of not being able to disable this, is creates huge delays, and lowers the video quality you can actually see in the end. I have a very fast low latency internet connection, and yet standing right there in the same room with the dropcam, I timed up to a 10 second delay in the so called "live" image. Yes, even if your viewing device is connected to your same home network as the camera, it still sends the video/audio out to the internet and back again. This is entirely inexcusable IMO. Checking on the support website this is the most requested feature yet dropcam by their replies seems to place little priority on it. Thinking of using this as a baby monitor? Better think again. 2) Even though they use public licensed pieces of software to operate the camera, they connection is completely proprietary. That means you can only use their software to view the camera and their software is quite lacking. Other cameras can be used with a wide variety of 3rd party viewing software. Hmm. If you could use the dropcam with any standard software, you could choose any number of video recording options should you want such a service. Something is beginning to smell very rotten here. 3) Dropcam claims you can view the camera through any web browser on a computer. This is not exactly true. The computer viewing experience requires flash which is an ADD ON to browsers, not part of the browser. You have to add it yourself. If is full of bugs, security holes, slows down your computer. There is a built in browser standard called HTML 5 that all newer browsers support, but forget about that with dropcam. 4) Want to share you camera video with relatives? Forget about it. Seems you can either share it publicly with the world, or give away the farm by providing your full access login credentials. I can't help but come away with the feeling this camera for dropcam is all about continuing to extract money from customers after the sale. It seems the reason for such a poor experience and software design is to lock you in to their "cloud recording" as your only option should you want to record any of your video stream. I am returning mine, frustrated that my valuable time, was wasted.
