Great bang for buck!

Product did exactly what I needed it to do. The screws and screwdriver that came in the package are garbage, but everything else is good quality. Used once several months ago to transfer data; my computer is so damaged that I am now using it again!

Saved my files

When a Windows 10 update killed my PC's operating system, I was unable to boot the system into W10, or use any method to repair it and preserve the data. The Insignia allowed me to pull all my important documents and photos from the Hard Drive before doing a factory reinstall.

Great product

Purchased online, product arrived quickly, and was very easy to set up and use. Best part was, it enabled me to re access an internal drive that I thought didn't work any more and retrieve tons of files I thought were lost.

Not bad, but could be better.

CONS: This case is pictured in a vertical position, but it would be crazy to do that because the case would tip over if you brushed it and a stand is not included. If you have the case positioned horizontally and the case isn't sitting quite flat, the vibration caused by the hard drive motor may cause the case to rattle because the case doesn't have rubber feet. Unlike older 3.5" hard drive enclosures which came with a power supply which provides both 5V and 12V power lines, newer cases use only a 12V DC adapter and a circuit inside the case splits the voltage down to 5V. The included adapter is only 2 amps, which should be good enough for most hard drives, but I think that it should have come with a 2.5A or 3A adapter - especially for some of the 4TB HDs. Unlike older enclosures, the power/HD Access LEDs are located at the REAR of the case. This is just cutting corners by the manufacturers, where they just solder the LEDs directly onto the USB/SATA circuit board instead of using a design which puts the LEDs in the front. PROS: -The USB 3.0 cable is sturdy and long (maybe just under 3 feet). -The aluminum case is sturdy and the power rocker switch doesn't look like it would wear out or break easily. -Heat dissipation is quite good. With my USB-powered desktop fan turned off, my 1TB HD reached a maximum of 42C after a few hours of file copying. Despite popular perception, an enclosure which gets hot on the outside is actually GOOD. This means that the case is not insulating the heat as much; The aluminum case is acting like a heat sink, though there is no direct contact between the HD and case. Suggestions: -Use something underneath the case to raise it off the desktop to reduce vibration and improve cooling. (I used 2 thin strips of styrofoam.) -Look on the internet for a free HD temperature program to make sure that your HD isn't getting too hot. Make sure that the program supports USB-connected hard drives. -If you're going to use the HD for a long period of time, you could try lowering the HD temperature further by using a fan. Ideally, you would want to try to get the HD temp in the 30's. I use one of those desktop USB-powered 4" fans which can tilt up and down to cool off my 2 external HDs.

Bought this Enclosure for my old 500GB WD

I'm using this Enclosure for my WD backup drive. I like how if you have the power off, the hard drive does not show nor is there any errors. This in-effect preserves the life of that hard drive. So far, no complaints, and it works great. I bought this about 3 weeks ago or end of April 2015.
