I won't comment on Windows 8, as this review is for the tablet. Overall I like the hardware. I've owned mine for about 3 months now and it is my primary computer. I have a quad core i5 desktop and a core i3 laptop that don't get used anymore. I combined the type cover and use it 75% of the time. I remove it for playing card games or showing people pictures.... DOWNSIDES: It does get very warm to the touch when using as a tablet. I wish it had an HDMI port instead of display port. And I wish the device was about 1" larger diagonally. Coming from a 15.6" laptop I have to sit much closer to the screen. A VERY GOOD DEVICE OVERALL...
My husband bought me the Surface Pro to upgrade me from my current Samsung tablet, unfortunately I had to return it within 48 hours due to it burning my hand when trying to use it as a tablet. It ran great and was more than capable to do anything I wanted it to do and if I used it sat at a desk or table it would have been great, I also loved the touch pad keyboard and being able to fold it back when not in use but even with the touch pad between the back and my hand, it still burnt my hand to the point its still sore now a day later. If they make a Pro with better cooling I will buy another in the future.
Ive been using the surface pro for 2 weeks now without any problems. I am highly impressed with the design and capabilities of this tablet. This is a powerful machine and is unlike anything else on the market today. It's great for gaming as well as productivity, I highly recommend the type cover to transform it into a true laptop and tablet or as I like to call it .. "Tabtop". I love it, it's simply amazing and wipes the floor with ipads!
This is the perfect product for me and has worked wonderfully since day one( week after launch) It does everything I need to and more. I am able to play games like skryim and fallout incredibly well. If your looking for somthing portable and amazing, buy this
I found the Surface pro far from perfect for the price. I am listing both plus and minus this I found out one I bought it.
Screen was very good compared to the RT
Full size USB 3 port, Micro SD slot, Amount of memory for a tablet, speed of memory and processor
Microsoft Support was very good, they to help with the sound volume problem and offered a replacement unit
The included pen and the units pen support is good (it helps you select small items on the screen).
Sound volume too low after windows updates
Unit is too heavy and too thick
Cameras are poor (low resolution)
internal cooling fans make noise (a tablet should be fan-less)
Battery life is too short (under 4 hours with normal use)
Microsoft is working on a replacement model using current generation processor which will fix the fan and battery life problems
I would like to see office included like the RT unit has today.
I got my Surface Pro a couple of weeks ago because I really needed a tablet and a PC. My brand "I" tablet was good for email and playing games, but when it came to actually using it for work, it fell short. In my line of work I need to have industry standard remote access, and the ability to use mainstream word processing and spreadsheet software. I was willing to give up some battery life in order to be able to do anything I needed to, where-ever I was. I also required something I could easily take to a conference without carrying a bag of peripherals and what-not. Surface Pro does all of that for me. I do think Microsoft should include the keyboard with the Surface Pro, as that is essential when you want to go into "PC mode". Microsoft has given it enough horse-power to do anything you need, and having a USB port is really nice!
It is a bit heavy, but I can live with that because of all the other benefits I get.
So if you need a tablet/notebook PC that can run anything Windows 8 can run, this is the machine for you.
At first the price made me hesitate to buy this amazing tablet laptop. But after I got it, everything became so easy and light. The stylus pen is also great. The cover keyboard is very functional. I have one issue though. I wanted a red or pink cover keyboard but what is available in your store is only blue, white or black. But pink or red really speaks about me, my passion, my personality.
I also need screen cover protection but I will deal with that later on.
This is a nice tablet, the screen is bright the colours are vivid. Great to be able to run tab apps and also real world business apps. I also purchased type cover and together this really is a notebook replacement. I do not understand all the fuss regarding Windows 8 being confusing, there is a touch/tablet portion that is really slick and we'll polished and a classic desktop portion that together with the type cover works well as a work notebook. I would like to see longer battery life and this is not really an issue.
This thing is amazing. was searching for a computer to suit my needs for over a year, waiting and waiting for a small TOUCH SCREEN with power. Amazingly fast with the Core i5. I was leary at first because I thought the 10.6" screen would be too small, but it turns out with the new WINDOWS 8 OS its just perfect. Would definitely recommend the PRO version so you can install all windows programs. With the TYPE PAD its just like a notebook, so kills 2 birds with 1 stone, I have a NOTEBOOK for business apps, also a TABLET for travel and sitting around the living room. way better than any old notebook/laptop.
I've had the Surface Pro 128GB for a little over a month. I noticed a rather severe backlight bleed in the lower right corner when I first bought it, but since it was only visible on a black screen (and it seems to be a wide spread problem based on online forums) I decided to keep it. Over the last several days it has developed a yellow tint along the bottom third of the screen, and this morning I've noticed a yellow blotch in the centre of the screen. Hopefully my next unit will be better. Otherwise an amazing piece of hardware.
I bought ipad and playbooks but after a short time it just ended up for my kids. Surface pro is way different. It is for serious tasks and for entertainment as well. It's a complete pc in tablet form . This is the real one for me. Amazing product!
I had an atom-base digitizer-enabled tablet and wanted to replace it with a higher performance one with a better screen
- wonderful screen resolution making reading PDFs less straining on the eyes
- feels like a sturdy device
- powerful i5 processor
- great responsive pen
- a bit heavy for tablet use
- definitely hot in the lap
- need it all day, so the battery power is a bit down for my uses 4-5 hours, even with processing max CPU at 70% and brightness at 20%
A great v1.0 device, but unfortunately I ended up returning it. For my uses, the faster processing speed and better resolution could not outweigh the heat, weight, and lower battery life. Could not replace my previous device just yet. Hoping v2.0 will be awesome!
I could see it replace a laptop though.
It's a great tablet that replaces most of my bulky laptop functionality. I am impressed by the quick startup and shutdown of the tablet. I am able to log into citric and perform my normal work and use the MS Office software. Do not forget to turn on the view compatibility especially when working with company site via citric. I also tested using the mouse and I am very happy with it. As expected, I was able to view my photos via the usb port without copying them into the tablet..
I do wish the battery lasts a little bit longer and that the device is lighter to hold. I will definitely have stronger arms in due time. Lap usage is a bit of a challenge but I found a workaround for it. I think if Microsoft can just make the cover hinge a little stiffer so that the keyboard can be a bit more steady on the lap. Other than that, my purpose for this table is really to be carried for travel and enable me to run some office applications via citric. It serves as a great tablet and a laptop. Very practical tablet. I recommend it especially for those who travel a lot and those who want to carry less electronics.
This beast does all I was expecting, but also the battery life isn't as bad as I had heard and the stylus supports pressure! I was sold to Android, but this just brings a new level of both productivity and entertainment to me personally. Updates have started, adding more features already (Windows to go support is now live). If you don't like the Metro interface (I certainly don't) you can just use it in desktop mode all the time. This tablet will force others to up their game in the future. Love.
it does everything I need it to do for my presentations. I would recommend this tablet without any shame. It feels more premium than an iPad and does everything I wished my iPad could do. My only problem is battery life, but Microsoft thought about it and added a long power cable which is convenient.
Going on a couple of weeks now and so far no complaints. It has replace my previous fujitsu slate PC. My note taking is now a combination of handwritting and text input. Interace is good. I've had no issue with battery life, but if I have a single meeting over 5 hours I can always bring in the adapter. I use it all evening unplugged without a problem. If I'm just reading and word processing I have the power plan set to max power savings with a capped processor speed (you don't need full speed for typing), giving me 5-6 hours. The device is warm but not hot like my old slate and I can only hear the fans if nothing else is making noise in the house. Palm block works great when using the pen. The screen protectors provided by best buy I find have a high friction compared to 3M protectors I've used in the past but you get used to it and they are far less visible than the 3M protectors.
So far, no complaints. Performance is great. Portability is good. Weight is good (compared to my old slate it's great). I'm using the type cover and it works very well. I picked up the wedge mouse as I found it difficult to grab a corner for resizing with the built in touch pad.
Too heavy to use as a tablet
Awkward to hold
I rather get an ultra book
It is like trying to do everything but not good at anything.
Lack of disk space because of windows taking so much
Can finally run office in a tablet form
Exactly what I was looking for. Nice design, perfect speed, can do everything in a small tablet body! Will be perfect if it could have a longer battery life and a lighter weight. But still the best product for now. Look forward to the 2nd generation!
Surface Pro is the device I had been waiting for. Although a lot of people have said it's not a good tablet and not a good ultrabook, none of them thought of the fact that I don't need to carry 2 devices. In terms of acting as a tablet, there are enough apps for my needs, and as I consider myself a power user, I like the fact I can switch over to a PC app instantly. Acting as an ultrabook (with touch capability), I ran Civ5 and MS Office on it no problem. It's also smaller than other ultrabooks, allowing me to put it in a small backpack. It's a swiss army knife indeed - master of none, but hey, I only need one of it!
Sheer performance ! Optimized windows 8 fluid experience ! This is what a Tablet PC should be...! Ignore the negative 'biased' reviews in the press, just go and grab it, if you are looking out for a versatile gadget offering powerful computing experience and not just kid's tablet toy. This is meant for some serious FUN, best bang for money. I would always prefer it over any laptop/ultrabook , PC or any tablet currently available in the market for following advantages...powerful computinng experience, ease of mobility, expandability (USBs, cloud storage), fluid (best) digitizer application/usability offering seamless note taking abilities for students, compatability with productivity windows legacy apps, solid built, buttery touch screen ( User inteface), Inovatively integrated type (touch) keyboard covers, powerful wi-fi, with use of 'Bluestack apps' full integration / access to android apps. For these adavantages, I can overlook so called lower battery life (3.5 ~ 4 hrs, which is in agreement with most of the ultrabooks with similar power, but without digitizer experience). Just go and grab it, if you are not willing to wait for the possibilities of using low powered intel Haswell CPUs in coming months (may be 6 months) for 2nd Gen Surface Pros.
Finally a tablet that is useful for me! Microsoft has done an incredible job with this device. Also, being able to run my business apps makes carrying a separate laptop pointless. My wife who has had an ipad for years is now very jealous. I waited patiently for this and am not disappointed.
Love the surface pro. Its everything I wanted the Ipad to be but never was. This thing was designed for productivity and you have all the freedom of a PC. Run any app in desktop mode, USB, Shared Drives. And it has the simple consumer friendly "Metro/Modern" interface with the app store. My kids love the touch enabled apps. I enjoy the touch apps, games, but when I need work done - the device is capable. I am still not over the fact that this small thing is running the full windows 8 on I5. You can also run any other OS on this. And also you can run Bluestacks to run any android apps (even though i dont like android).
So 100% freedom and flexibility.
I've replaced my main laptop with this and it fulfills the job and then some! If you have a network accessible hard drive like a WD MyBook Live, you can centralise all your data and the Surface becomes your interface even tho you have a healthy storage capacity (110Gb) once you've deleted the recovery partition (use a USB drive instead wich is quite easy with Win8). The hardware on this thing is solid and the build quality sets a new standard.
I was very excited about the Surface Pro when I first heard about it. Then, while waiting for it to come out I looked into other options that were coming out around the same time. I don't think there is a better choice than the Surface Pro right now. It is the perfect size to carry everywhere. The kickstand and integrated keyboard/cover are genius and implemented perfectly. I have used it as an eReader with the Kindle app and then been able to enter bills for my company with Quickbooks installed. I don't want or need a laptop with me everywhere I go and no other tablet could do enough to make it worth my time. This fits perfectly into my lifestyle and I don't need to make any compromises.
I picked up a surface pro. After having it for about a week now. I would have too say I am very impressed with it. No tablet is ever going to be perfect...is it. The battery life is only about 4-5 hours..and it is costly...reports of the " disk space disaster" are pretty much nonsense. Don't believe everything you here. Mac describes there there disk space in base 10 and windows in base 2. Do the math and there about equal. The pen works well, The interface is very impressive. Just feels like they got it right...streams media wireless to an Xbox excellent...windows 8 on this tablet/full PC just makes sense. Starbucks Disapproved...
This tablet PC is a great desktop/Laptop replacement. For browsing the internet and news sites on the couch I use the tablet on its own using the touch screen. However for productivity task like Word, Autocad or Photoshop I find it best to connect the tablet to my KVM switch and run with a real keyboard and mouse on a 22 in monitor. The mini displayport to VGA connector is a good investment. I would suggest buying a 64GB MicroSd card for putting videos on.
I use a program to virtualize my old PC running XP and I can now run it when needed using Hyper-V on the tablet. Gives me access to some old programs I had. I'm really impresses with the surface so far.
Everything I hoped for. A perfectly portable laptop. Capable of connecting to an optical drive, and running the full office suite makes it the business man's best friend.
Best of both worlds, Tablet and Laptop to run real apps. Just one comment, get the 128 GB, don't bother with 64 GB.
This is the best Tablet I have ever used. In fact, I hesitate to call it a tablet as that seems a bit limiting. This is a true laptop replacement and in my opinion truly overtakes the iPad in every way. I have been in tech development and manufacturing for 20+ years and I have never seen a piece of technology that has made me smile quite as big as this.
It is a superb device, fast, slick, gorgeous screen and very user friendly. It is a delight to use. I have tried to buy more for my kids but they are hard to find. Have seen some comments about lack of storage but they are specious. Plenty of storage for a tablet. 64GB version has more free space than the entire drive on 32GB Ipad and no one complains it has insufficient storage. Welcome to Cloud computing.
This is a terrific device. I recommend to all Windows users - I use Quicken, Quickbooks, TD active trader, TurboTax, MS Office, Outlook, etc. and they all run very well on Surface Pro.
Surface Pro tries to be everything to both Tablet and Laptop users and fails miserably at each in it's own ways. As a tablet it's too loud (fans on a tablet!), hot, and heavy and while MS's digitizer is good the app market remains extraordinarily weak on Windows 8. As a laptop, it's weak for it's price and the desktop windows experience is clunky and has weird scaling issues and problems with the touch interface. For what MS wants for this you could but both a decent tablet and a decent laptop.
I wanted something to run my music and dj software like Ableton Live, Cubase 7 and be portable/compact. The touch screen makes Windows fun and fast, and the apps just work with the touch giving me a free controller surface!
Swiping between Outlook email, Skype, and Ableton is so cool!
Nice hardware - really makes it possible to run everything everywhere I go!
Does what a tablet does. Does what an ultrabook does. Does both AMAZINGLY!
Don't believe the hype you read about it's shortcomings. It has equal free disk space compared to a MacBook air. It does more than a MacBook air.
best Windows 8 device I have used, but there are some serious problems
-too heavy to use as just a tablet
-not enough power to use for gaming
-awkward form factor for use on your lap
If you want something quick and easy to move around.. this is a great device.
If you want something you can move around easily and use in your hands freely, get a tablet
If you want something you can be highly productive on and use on your lap, get a laptop
The i5 moves this thing so quick it never has problems switching apps and swiping through menus
***41GB are used by windows making this the only usable one... 64GB version is almost useless!!***
***Battery life is under 5 hours realistic, which is sub-par compared to laptops or tablets!!***
