Increase your comfort and decrease your energy bill with the help of the Nest Learning Thermostat. This smart device learns how you like to heat your home, then intelligently figures out the most energy-efficient way to keep you comfy. Since it's WiFi-connected you can even change the thermostat over the internet from anywhere in the world.

More Information

Your home is your castle. But, castles can be notoriously hard to heat. Thankfully, you've got the Nest Learning Thermostat. It uses learning technology to figure out your schedule and your heating and cooling preferences to reduce your energy usage and save you money. Easy to install, it connects with your existing home network over WiFi and can be controlled from your mobile device, laptop, or computer.

Nest offers additional convenience and functionality with the Works with Nest Initiative. You can use Nest to link up with other Works with Nest compatible smart devices: A smart garage door can tell Nest when you've left the house, a smart door lock can notify Nest about who's arrived home and what temperature they prefer, and smart appliances can go into energy saving mode when Nest tells them that you're away. Saving on your energy bill and creating a connected home is easier than ever with the Nest Learning Thermostat.

What you need to know:

  • Reduce your energy bill: Nest uses smart learning technology and learns your schedule and heating/cooling preferences over time. It then takes this data and programs itself in a way that reduces overall energy usage up to 20%. The environment and your wallet will thank you.
  • Smart savings: Nest is smart enough to turn down the thermostat when you're away at work, and it displays the Leaf icon to show you when it's at a temperature that's saving you money. Airwave automatically reduces air conditioning usage when indoor humidity isn't too high, so you'll get reduced energy bills while keeping the house cool.
  • Connectivity: Nest connects with your home's WiFi network so you can control it from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop from anywhere in the world.
  • Remote monitoring: You can view Energy History on the Nest Mobile or Web apps so you can get detailed information about your energy usage and figure out how best to save.
  • Works with Nest Initiative: Since Nest is smart and WiFi-connected, it's able to work with a variety of other smart devices to provide additional convenience and functionality, and the list of compatible devices is growing all the time.
  • Easy installation: As easy as installing a lighting fixture, Nest is simple to install, and probably in less than 30 minutes. If you'd rather let a professional handle it, you can contact a Nest Pro to install Nest, remove and recycle your old thermostat, and connect Nest to your WiFi network.

Nest works with over 95% of 24V heating and cooling systems, including gas, electric, oil, solar, hot water, geothermal, forced air, heat pump and radiant.

  • Heating: one, two, and three stages (W1, W2, W3)
  • Cooling: 1 and 2 Stages (Y1, Y2)
  • Heat Pump: with auxiliary and emergency heat (O/B, AUX, E)
  • Fan (G)
  • Power (C, Rh, Rc)
  • Whole home humidifier or dehumidifier (HUM, DEHUM)* - professional installation recommended
  • Dual fuel systems (heat pump with furnace)* - professional installation recommended
  • Common wire not required in 99% of installations

The Nest Learning Thermostat is not compatible with line voltage, millivolt systems or low voltage systems with incompatible wires. The Nest Thermostat is not compatible with some systems without a common wire installed.

The Nest Learning Thermostat is only compatible with low voltage 24 volt systems, not line voltage or millivolt systems. While most low voltage systems are compatible with the Nest Thermostat, here are some exceptions:

Incompatible systems:

  • Remote sensors. While the Nest Thermostat may be compatible with this system, it won't be able to gather data from existing remote sensors.
  • Proprietary systems. Proprietary systems use a serial communications protocol to communicate between the system and the thermostat. The Nest Thermostat can't communicate with serial protocols, though some proprietary systems can be wired with standard HVAC wires.
  • Some micro-controller based systems. Systems that use micro-controllers instead of relays are sometimes more sensitive to power sharing. If so, the Nest Thermostat may need a common wire to be compatible with these systems.
  • High impedance systems. Some systems with particularly high impedance can't deliver enough power to the Nest Thermostat over the HVAC wires. If so, the Nest Thermostat will need a common wire to be compatible with these systems.

Incompatible wiring:

  • Three stage cooling. The 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostat is only compatible with systems that have one and two stage cooling.
  • International systems. Some international systems, such as Buderus boilers, have dry contacts or other incompatible wiring. These systems may require relay panels in order to be installed with standard American thermostat wiring.
  • Heat pumps with L wires. The Nest Thermostat doesn't support Service Indicator (L) wires.

Incompatible hardware:

Zone relay panels or control panels. Some systems have control panels or equipment interface modules that require a common wire to be compatible with the Nest Thermostat.

Here's a list of known panels that require a common wire:

  • Honeywell AQ25110B
  • Honeywell EMM-3
  • Honeywell TZ-4
  • Honeywell HZ311
  • Bryant 548F036
  • White-Rogers 36C03-300
  • Carrier HK42FZ011
  • Nordyne 624631-A
  • Nordyne 903915A
  • Waterfurnace ATV045A 110CIT

Some gas valves on systems vibrate or buzz when the Nest Thermostat is installed. This can usually be fixed by connecting a common wire.

Love Nest

I bought this during black Friday. I was choosing between this and the eco bee. ive had my eye on the eco bee for quite some time now but later found out the app support was poor and that nest was a lot better. main reason i wanted a wifi thermostat was to control it from the app when im away from home. I installed it in under 15min. super easy as long as you follow the instructions (take a pic of your old thermostats wiring before removing in case you need to re hook it up for some reason). ive since set up a schedule using the app and it was very easy! love using the auto away feature (basically turns down your temp if it senses your away and up when you arrive home or senses movement at home) also connects to plenty of other smart home controls!!!

Putting up with it

I have had this thermostat for a while and I am not impressed. The only good thing behind it is their marketing. They manage to sell a lot of them with false advertisement since they claim that their thermostat save you money, even in July. Big news: I don't need a furnace in July and any thermostat set at 20C will not start your furnace in July. Having said this, it is easy to install. However, learn how to reset it to factory settings since you will need to reset it every now and then. It updates itself through the internet and sometimes it doesn't seem to digest the update, so you get a message that your furnace is malfunctioning. Before calling a repairman who will charge you $100 to knock at your door, reset your thermostat to factory settings because there is a good chance there is nothing wrong with the furnace, it's just the thermostat acting up. If you don't like playing with electronic gadgets, this is NOT a thermostat for you. I don't like playing with gadgets that do nothing else but turn the furnace on and off, but I have invested in it and I have to put up with it.

Great product

I purchased this 2nd generation Nest and although it took a while for it to be shipped, it has been a great product. Very easy set up and installation. Very good support on the Nest website including immediate wiring diagrams for installation. On top of all of that, it looks great too.

So far great

I have been using this thermostat for about two weeks so far everything is great. Really easy to install I was a little worried at first that was complete unnecessary. If you can assemble IKEA furniture you surely don't need to worry about it.

Looks nice but didn't work

Looks a whole lot nicer visually than the thermostat I had but it didn't work properly. I followed the instructions to a tee and spent all day with friends, who are electricians trying to figure it out but to no avail. I bought this in the winter of 2015, boxing day sale [price]. I would set it at 22 degrees but the heater would blast up to 28 degrees like a sauna. I checked my settings and indeed I had set it to 22. The temperature was never controlled properly. To add to the problem, the next thermostat would turn on my AC unit, even though I had selected "heater only". After a few days I returned the product and went back to my old ghetto plain looking thermostat. At least it worked!

Good product

The is the second gen. thermostat but very good product. Fast shipping and easy to install.

Highly Recommended

I did quite a few weeks of research. Was watching it and when it went on sale I jumped on it. The website was great in walking you through the simple setup. The website even allowed you to indicate what wires you have plugged in to your old thermostat, and then it told you if it was compatible - if it is, they show you in an actual picture where you wires will go and what your set up will look like. Impressive! The ability to use your device and change the temps, set 'away', change settings, and it responds immediately. Love it! Now I have the Nest Protect and they all work off of the same app. Too Cool!!

  • from Maple Ridge, BC

awesome product!!

works exactly as advertised. I installed the iPhone app and it adjusts from anywhere in the home or miles away. Installed easily, just hooked up the appropriate wires. Now the device is learning to schedule and seems to be doing it well. I would highly recommend.

Not worth it.

Wasn't getting enough power and kept shutting off. When it did work it was mostly a pain as it would kick out if we were in a different room than the thermostat for too long. Don't bother, there are better options.

Be aware of extra installation charges

What Nest don't tell you about it is that you most likely will need to pay for a Nest Pro installer to make this thermostat to run. It is very easy to install but there is a catch. I did check compatibility before open the box and their website confirmed my HVAC systems was compatible. After one day running I did get an error E24. This means my HVAC system is not sending enough energy so I require a Pro installer to fix this. The worst part is apparently this is a common error so you have to put aside dollars for installation charges, so do your math. In addition I did call one of the Nest Pro Installers listed in their website a this guy was clueless. I can not deny it is a beautiful thermostat but I need something reliable hanging on my wall.

Works like a charm

I am not sure why people have been complaining about it. However I do notice, that most people complain about compatibility on these reviews, which is less a problem with Nest but more a problem with your own house/condo. To me, this works just perfect. I am truly delighted by Nest and I am happy that I purchased and installed it myself. Technically, I can start calling myself "handy man" now. LOL. It motivates me to keep the temperature to earn leaves, which sometimes goes crazy!! I remember once we had over 10 people in our living room, and the room started to burn hot.. I kept pushing the dial on Nest to lowest temperature but it took some while.. which again is less a Nest problem but more an HVAC problem. The reason I mention it here is because, I get a bit stingy in trying to keep it on leaf mode most times and when I actually needed our HVAC to work.. I missed the time window and everybody had to suffer.. Regardless, I still like my Nest. Its awesome!!

Temperature is wrong - poor display

Google Nest Temperature wrong and you will find hundreds of people who raise this issue - it seems nest inflates the temperature shown to 'trick' you into saving energy. It is annoying for my house to be at 21C and the nest says it is 23C. The display could have anything on it, but they show the temperature you have set instead of the current temperature (very odd). Finally if you are getting this for the reporting, it is weak at best - bars of time the furnace or AC ran - not alot of detail. If I could find my receipt I would return it.

Great thermostat

Had a 1st gen, but sold the house, so bought a 2nd gen for our new house. The new home has a geothermal heat pump, and I had no idea how to wire it. I took a picture, emailed it to Nest, and the next day they sent me an idiot proof diagram on how to install it. The nest in my last home worked perfectly for the 4 years I had it, and so far the new one has been flawless as well. Good piece of gear.

  • from Ancaster, ON

Great looking product with excellent functionality

The thermostat looks great, which makes sense given that it was designed by the same guy that developed the iPod. The installation was a breeze thanks to the how to video. It's also nice to know that if you're away and your home temperature drops suddenly you can get an alert sent to your phone to let you know.

Suits a techy family to a "T"

I love our Nest Thermostat. I purchased it with the Hydro One "BYOT" rebate program, and have not regretted the decision. Before purchasing the thermostat, I was in conversation with the NEST support, and they were amazing! We emailed pictures of the wiring of the then present thermostat to them, and they emailed me back an installation guide & wiring set up. I have never seen my hubby happier with dealing with a thermostat upgrade. I love the simplicity of the programming, and the fact that even far from home, I can change the temperature - or laying in bed at night, I don't have to get up to adjust the heat. I enjoy the savings reports, the usage reports, the temperature outdoors at the click of the thermostat. I have a hard time finding something I don't like about this Thermostat, and am looking forward to more things that work with the Nest system! Keep up the great stuff guys!

Not worth what they charge for it

I would not call it a piece of garbage as other buyers have called it, but I was disappointed by this thermostat. What is the fuss all about? Nest's claims are over inflated. It sends a report of your energy consumption and draws conclusions about the amount of energy you have saved thanks to your thermostat without taking into account the outdoor temperature. Do not believe their claims. Even in Canada, a manual thermostat will save you energy in July!! A normal programmable thermostat works as well and is easier to operate than the Nest thermostat. Although easy to install, it needs to be reset from time to time, or else it just does not work properly (it will not control your furnace or cooling system). The problem with a thermostat that doesn't work reliably is that you never know whether you are having a problem with your furnace or your thermostat. Chances are if you have a Nest thermostat and your furnace is not working properly, your thermostat is the problem. If you decide to buy a Nest, keep your old thermostat since you may need it to check if your furnace or your thermostat is broken.

  • from Niagara Falls, ON

Not Overly Impressed

Thermostat has a one degree spread either way of the set temperature. Eg. Set at 70F it does not call for heat until the temparature drops to 69F. The furnace then runs until the temperature reaches 71F. For the thermostat to call for heat again it has to drop to 69F. Therefore the temperature has to drop 2 full degrees before it calls for heat. This usually takes a while, especially if you have a heavily insulated home. By that time you will probably feel a chill. Same for central air but opposite. Look around as there are others programables that give better climate control.

Canadians Beware

So Nest is claiming it is officially into Canada now. Despite this claim, Nest is not compatible with normally open zonal isolation valves. Many new setups in Canada have only two wires, appear to work on Nest's compatibility checker, but actually do not work. I called their tech support, which were very friendly and timely, but it took a whole day to figure out that it was not compatible. Their support had never even seen a normally open valve and dismissed it as an outside probability near the start of the troubleshooting. If you want to see if your place is compatible, don't use the online checker. Instead, get your thermostat model number and give them a call. Ask about the normally open thing and they should be able to look up your existing thermostat and see if Nest is compatible. I've researched workarounds, and for the price, there is no way you should go this route. To finish the rant, it's super stupid of Nest not to have this work on a common canadian heating type because it is just a software issue. The hardware and wiring all exist for it to work and a simple firmware upgrade could solve this issue. However, if you check the web, it's been a problem for awhile.

Wors of the worst

my 20 years old thermostat is much accurate than this junk I will return it today and don't recommend it to anybody.

  • from kitchener

Garbage never accurate I cant Believe they call it smart thermostat and you have to adjust the temperature all the time manually because it can never read the correct temperature in the room.

  • from London, ON

Stay away from this garbage

I own nest first generation then upgraded to second generation and I'll tell you this is waste of money piece of garbage I am sick and tired adjusting the temperature up and dow 10 or 20 times a day as this thing is never accurate then I discovered another smart thermostat Called Ecobee3 and I purchased it installed it and wow what a big different. finally after 4 years I am feeling the correct temperature and never have to worry adjusting it. I don't recommend this garbage to anyone you should try the Ecobee3 before you purchase this one.

Just do it! Get the NEST

This is the thermostat to buy! Love it from day one. Purchased the Nest Protect as well and looking forward to Dropcam when it is integrated into these as well.

  • from SW Ontario

Excellent product. Super easy to install in less than 10 minutes. Is extremely efficient with Airwave technology and Auto Away setting. Remote functionality works like a charm on iPhone and iPad. Would be better if Nest supported WPS for network configuration.

  • from Fort Mcmurray, AB

Excellent Product

Before buying this product I set my expectation and review all available product of this type. But I narrowed down to Nest. I have installed it at home and for the past two weeks it working as expected. Five 5 for this.

Great Thermostat

I installed this thermostat a week ago. I love the auto-away feature! From the energy tracking feature I can tell my furnace has been running less on the days we've been away. I'm sure it will save me money in the long run. It also has a great app, and connects to wifi. Now I can turn the temperature up before I get home. And with the auto programming feature, I find it adjusts to what I want automatically.

  • from Niagara Region

Loved it but it died and not replaced

I'll start with the fact that when it worked it was wonderful and addicting to monitor and track my home thermostat remotely. But alas the product is not robust enough for long term use. My unit died and it took me two days to get Nest tech support on the phone. After three hours of tech support and $150 service call from my local HVAC dealer they decided to send me a replacement. That took a week to process. All this on the coldest week of the year with temp near -30 !! In the meantime I installed my old Honeywell unit and it ran fine. The replacement Nest lasted about a week and then died again. Now I can't reach Nest and they are not responding to my email. The quality needs improvement and more testing. After all, if it fails on the coldest night of the year, you can expect serious problems with your home. I'd like to see a beefed up electronics circuit with proper environmental testing. I can't risk a failure if I'm away for a few days and my home dropping below zero. I loved the unit but it's not reliable. A friend at work had a similar experience and waited a month for a replacement unit. Do your research online for similar stories. I hope there is a better product in the future. For now my Honeywell unit will keep me warm and safe.

  • from Vancouver, BC

As good as I hoped

User Friendly is the best way to describe the experience/product. The website was excellent for determining if my system would be compatible with it. Installation was easy but does take about an hour so allow for that. It is extremely well thought out. They include a two headed screwdriver, back plate if you need to cover old holes, labels to stick on your wires to avoid forgetting which is which and it has a built in level. It also looks very cool and the app works great. A lower price would always be welcome but I have no criticism of the product.

  • from Winnipeg, MB

Works as promised

I have a one year old Lennox high efficiency furnace, with a two stage burner and fans plus a continuous run low which is much lower than the furnace low fan speed. Four wire set up. Set up was easy and quick, connected to my wifi right away. I got into the detailed settings to tell it when I last installed a filter, so I expect to tell me when to change it. The web site says it calculates this time on furnace run time, so things like pets, carpets, etc will affect the capability of this setting, but it is still a nice feature. With my high efficiency furnace, I do not expect a lot of money savings, but this device looks quite nice on the wall. The ability to control it remotely over the internet is the greatest feature. It will be interesting to see if it saves any money over the summer with the air conditioner as it adjusts temperature taking the indoor humidity into account.

Doesn't work with 2 stage mid-eff gas furnace

Purchased this unit, had it installed for a couple weeks, and although Nest claims that it will work with 2 stage gas fired furnaces on their website, it actually does not function properly. I found that it was hunting between high and low speed fan settings. I called thier tech support and was on hold for more than 1 hour before they even answered, and then was trying to troubleshoot for more than half an hour, and the call got dropped (my fault), but they didn't have the courtesy to even call me back. During our conversation, they explained that there was a work around, but that it would involve me hiring an HVAC technician (out of my pocket) to change some parameters on my furnace so that the fan would be limited to one speed only. This would defeat any energy savings as my furnace is 2 speed for efficiency purposes, and I immediately shopped around for a replacement and returned the Nest.

  • from Mississauga

Only one negative comment

We have had this in our home for over a year now and love it, all details are it says but my only negative comment is that it doesn't tell or remind you when to change your furnace filter. Otherwise worth every penny.

  • from Calgary, AB

Outstanding device

Very easy to install and set up. You can train the thermostat by adjusting it manually for a week or program a schedule from your iPad, phone, or computer. One of many excellent features is that you can set a target time to reach operating temperature and the device computes a time to fire up the furnace depending on outside temperature and past results. In short, you can count on getting up to a warm house no matter how cold it is outside. It is great to be able to check on the temperature of your house when you are on vacation, no matter where you are in the world. If you go away and forget to adjust the Nest, it will figure out that nobody is home and turn down the temperature anyway.

  • from Gibsons, BC

Excellent use of technology - just as advertised

After having done extensive research, I decided to purchase this thermostat. Using the ample information found on their website (along with a quick call to them), I was able to determine (before buying) that the Nest would indeed work with my system. Installation took a few minutes, and set-up was complete within another 4 or 5 minutes. It had learned our schedule within a few days, and was running as advertised at that point. The ability to control it remotely is a huge bonus, as we are able to turn it down if we forget when we go away for a weekend. Overall this is exactly as advertised and is working flawlessly.

  • from Montreal

Love it!

I really love it... Very vey easy to install and configure. I'm still impressed on all the technologies you can embark in this small piece! After one week, the learning experience step 1 is completed and you can adjust it through the web interface. Great product with a very nice look. If you are not sure on the compatibility with your current system, you can take a picture of your current thermostat, send it to the help desk, and they gonna tell you if you can make the switch... And how!

Does not work with systems found in Toronto condos

Just bought it, about to install it, and found a problem. Called tech support. The issue was that the Nest system does not work with variable fan systems (i.e. systems with fan settings for high, medium, and low) - which is strange because this is the type of AC/heating systems found in most condos in Toronto! Tech support said there is no way it will work and I will have to return the unit. Returning the unit... too bad!
