Not worth it

Purchased this router in an attempt to extend coverage and consistency of wifi signal in small bungalow with modem installed in the basement. Easily followed the steps for installation, but afterwards there was no connection. Contacted the service provider to bridge the modem in order to enable router use (which was not included in the instructions). This enabled a connection, but a very poor one. Tried to find a number for support, but first has to complete an online process to get a contact number to reach NETGEAR customer service. Number provided was long distance, (area code 408) with only a French toll free line. Proceeded to spend over an hour and a half with a technician who kept placing me on hold and asking to repeat the same troubleshooting steps over and over. Needless to say, was unable to solve the issue. Eventually, just reset things back to original status and reconnected original modem. But disappointingly now have an even worse connection than when we started out! Very frustrating. Bottom line, router did not work for what it claims it can do...was only able to maintain a strong signal when standing right beside it!

Easy setup, good coverage

Set this up yesterday. So far, so good. Clear instructions. Setup wizard was helpful. Coverage ranges from great to decent (2 bars) throughout a 3500 sq ft house, even through some stone-covered walls. FYI - be sure to turn OFF the wifi signal on your Modem/Router. Also, connecting to a printer was straight-forward. Still only Day 2 but if anything changes, I'll write a fresh review.

Do not purchase this product.

I purchased this router, hooked it up and it worked. Then I received an e-mail to upgrade, as soon as the upgrade finished the unit went off line. I called tech support, that happens to be in India. They wanted to charge me close to what I paid for the unit to correct the problem. I checked the consumer reports on Netgear and I guess I was lucky because the upgrade usually happens after the 90 day free support runs out. Stay away from Netgear!!

So far, so good

Wireless connection is great. It's steady - no dropping so far. This was a replacement for my old linksys DIR-628. I'm pretty happy with the router.

Great Router

My previous NetGear router was getting old and constantly dropping signal so I chose this one for the upgrade since I like NetGear and it was also on sale. I was amazed how easy it was to install. I also liked that it came with a pre-installed username and password so there was no risk at all in connecting it right out of the box. I've seen an incredible change in our wifi in the house. The signal is strong and very stable. Highly Recommended

Good stable performance on N

I've used this router for about 3 weeks now. I have it installed in my basement and the signal reaches my 2nd floor with little drop in signal strength on the N frequency. However, the signal strength drops substantially on 5G. Even on the ground floor where the modem is only about 20 feet away 1 floor down. The connection is unstable at this frequency and would drop from time to time. I do HD streaming and use Chromecast without any issues on N. So a great router for it's price.

This thing rocks.

Having upgraded 3 x desktops, 3 laptops to with AC wireless. I have now upgraded our actual home network with Rogers using their own AC gateway router. As expected both the coverage with the Rogers modem was lacking tested using "inSSIDer" . So I have tested a few different models for a few days each including more expensive AC versions. I settled on this purchased when on sale. This unit picks up where the Rogers modem falls down. I still use the 5G channel of the Rogers modem switching off the 2G band. I use the Netgear AC1900 Extender paired with the Netgear AC router to hit the far reaches of my home. Signal link rate is 100% on all devices steaming HD TV/movies flawlessly. If you don't have AC WIFI compatible computers swap out the internal cards or buy external AC USB adapters. I also added SSD drives to all my stuff (keeping the old drives as a back-up). Boot times are 6-30 seconds and my old computers are faster than most new stuff and coping well with the HD streaming demands I am asking of them. Kappy days, hope this helps folks.

Good range but struggles with Hi-Def streaming

Having a tough time streaming Hi-Def video from a hard drive connected to the router. Maybe it is having a hard time with the hard dive app. The software that you have to download to set it up and manage it is o.k. but not what I would expect from NETGEAR. I'll keep it an use it only its range is all that much better than my old [price] router.

Great Mid Range Router

I obtained this router to replace an aging Linksys that started to keep dropping WiFi connections. I was looking for replacement that could be installed in the basement of a 3000 sq. ft. home and still provide good coverage for the growing number of WiFi devices in the home. After researching at places like the wirecutter I decided the Netgear R6400 would be ideal for my needs. The wifi range is great, it has GB ethernet connections and provides QoS for video streaming and VOIP which were also a requirement of mine. I would have liked more advanced control of the router like I was used to with Linksys but so far I've still been able to accomplish what I need to using the simplified interface provided by Netgear.

Using as Wi-Fi access point

The installation is streamlined to prevent problems with new users. When prompted to download their software, it's probably a good idea to do so. Personally, this process seemed a little obtuse, but got it sorted out in short order. This unit may be used as a layer three device (router) or as a layer two device (an wi-fi access point), which is what I'm doing. As such, there have been no problems whatsoever. Previously the wi-fi was co-located with my ADSL modem/router and ethernet switch, which is also where all my cat-5 wiring ends up. This time I relocated the wi-fi to a more central location where the 5Ghz network typically syncs up with a transmit rate of mid 800 Mbps. In this new location this router also acts as a ethernet switch for my home theatre PC that delivers remote access to a network attached storage device where my movie & music collection resides. No problems and no complaints. Note: I gave this device a 4 star rating the web site doesn't play nice with my browser :-) One issue I had to address were all those bright LEDs flashing madly about - it was easy, just logged in and disabled them all except the power led.

Great Router

Works great right out of the box! No complaints, great reception all through my house now. I would recommend this product, I also purchased the NETGEAR range extender and they work great together.
