From world-renowned landmarks to a star athlete or singer, the Nikon NIKKOR AF-S DX 55-300mm VR II telephoto zoom lens can help you get closer to your subject. A Vibration Reduction System goes that extra mile to keep your shots crisp, while Nikon's Silent Wave Motor ensures quick, quiet autofocus.

More Information

Get up close and personal
  • Get closer to your subject with the 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 telephoto zoom lens. Whether you're sitting on the sidelines at your nephew's little league game or admiring the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry, you'll be able to zoom in for a crisp shot of the action or scenery.
Stay sharp and focused
  • Don't have a steady hand with the camera? Don't worry. The Vibration Reduction II stabilization system makes your images come up sharper and clearer by automatically compensating for camera shake.
  • Even a tripod doesn't guarantee absolute stability. Nikon's Tripod Detection mode allows you to keep VR image stabilization activated and automatically compensates for minute vibrations when mounted on a tripod.
  • Quickly focus on any subject thanks to Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor. Precise, quiet, and fast autofocus means you can hone in on that fawn in the woods before it runs off to its mother.
Achieve high contrast and clarity
  • The High Refractive Index (HRI) lens element keeps the lens slim and compact while maximizing clarity and contrast at all apertures and focal lengths. So the black and white stripes on your sister's T-shirt will show up crisply in this year's family reunion photo.
  • Two Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) elements minimize chromatic aberration, making the detailed lines of the Eiffel Tower come out in razor-sharp clarity without annoying colour fringing.
Weather the weather
  • Don't worry about a sprinkle of rain or dust. A weather-sealed mount protects the lens from the elements.

Great. When it works.

I was told that the lenses made in China were of far less quality than those made in Japan. Seems obvious, but boy were they right. I was also told that this lens configuration in particular had a reputation for jamming unless it was treated like a Ming vase. My son was just getting into photography and rather than him using my stuff I bought him this lens. And you get exactly what you pay for. Ever wondered why some lenses cost thousands and some hundreds for essentially the same configuration ? This is why. The lens worked fine for six months and then just jammed. Done. Obviously there are people out there who love this lens and have had a great experience. In my circle of friends alone I'm the third person to have this issue with this lens. Caveat emptor.

Awesome Budget Lense

When I wanted to expand my horizon, I decided to compliment the 18-55 kit lense on my D5300 with this 55-300. After a few shots, I got used to the reach that this lense gives me. I was able to shoot birds at 100' way better and even things like dragonflies were really sharp at 4.5 feet away. This lense is well worth the reasonable price. My next lense purchase will be a fast 35 or 50 for portraits and landscapes. Great buy!!

Really great lens - Highly recommended

I bought this lens for my girlfriend who is really into photography and she was absolutely thrilled. It worked seamlessly with her Nikon camera and was able to step up her photography to another level. Certainly nothing to complain about with Nikon quality. Pictures are crisp and clear. Allows both automatic and manual functions - for beginners or experienced shutterbugs. Comes with a nice little bag to keep it protected when not on the camera. If you have a Nikon camera - this lens is well worth the investment.

Excellent Telephoto Lens

At 300mm this lens offers fantastic capability and I'm glad I made the step up to this lens versus the 200mm. My purposes are solely amateur photography but I still want to make them count. The size of the lens takes up a fair bit of space in a medium sized dslr bag but it fits with my Nikon D3300.

Excellent lens, but could be even better...

Excellent lens to compliment 18-55mm or 18-140mm lens. Not the fastest (f4.5-5.6) lens, but has quality optics and smooth auto-focus. Comes with lens hood. Not all lenses, do! The bayonet mount is plastic. It should be made of metal, so it lasts long. 5 year Warranty! Would buy again. 4 Stars out of 5. Would get 5 stars if the bayonet mount was metal, instead of plastic.

Terrific 55-300 Lens for my D3200

Read the online reviews and recommendations before deciding to buy the NIKKOR 55-300 lens and I'm pleased to say that the lens has met all my price/performance expectations. I found the lens is a great match for the 3200 and the outdoor photos I like to take. The camera/lens combo provides an ease of use with a comfortable weight/balance that supports holding position for that perfect shot. Very satisfied.

Love this Lens

I am very happy with this lens, was able to catch it while it was on sale. I am using this lens on my Nikon D5200. The auto focus is a little slower compared to the stock kit lens (18-55), but it works well. Image stabilization also takes a few seconds to kick in, but again, works great. It is not horribly heavy or bulky considering the focal length. Love that it picks up where my stock lens leaves off. I have been getting great shots, almost all of them hand held vs a tri pod. May not be the best lens money can buy, but a good bang for a buck. Very happy with my purchase.

Excellent lens for the price

I wish I could afford to buy a full frame DSLR and a bunch of f1.8 or f2.8 lenses but my photography is only a hobby and mostly for family photos. For a sub-[price] telephoto lens, this one is solid. I used it this weekend for my daughter's dance recital and I got a lot of compliments on the shots I was able to capture with this lens. It's not the fastest and I wish it was more like a 28-300 or something that went a little wider because I found that I could not back it out far enough to capture the entire dance troupe, but I knew that going in. That said, for those shots where I wanted to get right up on my daughter's face, this lens was great! The lighting in the auditorium was low, yet I was still able to use a reasonable shutter speed (1/160) and still get enough light and no noticeable shaking or jitter...even at 300mm zoom. When my wife says "That lens was totally worth it!" then I guess that is endorsement enough. Would recommend for a hobby photographer looking for a reasonably priced telephoto lens.

Excellent product, I have used Olympus, and Sony alpha in the past as a photography enthusiast, Lens is very easy to use once you read the manual and captures very sharp pictures living up to its name

Excellent Lens

I purchased this lens for my D5300 to accompany the 18-55mm lens that came with it. Overall I am very satisfied with the lens after a few months of use. I captured excellent close-ups during a recent hockey trip of many of the players faces. Not an issue, but one thing to note is that this lens had troubles auto-focusing in low light when zoomed in. This is a fairly rare instance though and I could correct the issue by shooting with manual focus.

Well, not that great!

I bought this lens a ear ago. I wish I could read more reviews on the internet before. Yes, you can replace your 2 lenses with this one however there are two problems - Images are not sharp (very soft) and motor is not silent especially when you take video.

We have been really pleased with this lens. It brings us up close and personal to the subject without disturbing the action.

Metal Mount

I haven't used this lens enough to comment on the performance but wanted to note that it is now made with a metal mount. Great value

Nikon Nikkor 55-300mm VR ED Lens(AF-S DX)

I was not sure which lens to buy.Either Nikon 55-200mm VR or the 55-300mm VR ED. But finally I decided to go for 55-300mm VR ED Lens and I made the right choice. I just used this lens in my recent trips to the Rockies. The entire rockies seemed to be so vibrant and close with this lens. It was the best fit for my Nikon D60 camera. It operates so well. The only cons is the plastic mount. Most probably to keep the price low.

Great Lens

I returned my 55-200mm lens and purchased this one. Very similar but quite a bit better zoom which makes a difference when it is needed. I use it with my Nikon D5100 and is a nice complement to my 18-55mm lens. Very impressed on closeups of insects and blossoming flowers and trees.
