Excellent Product

Awesome product! I bought this in the May of 2013, so it's nearly a year, and it's been subjected to a lot of different conditions and daily use, still going strong. Its particularly lightweight, and it does well against newer cameras.

Excellent Camera!

I've had it for 2 years now, never failed on me. I've used it indoor, outdoor, freezing in 3am, snowing, and a little drizzle-- never failed on, me and am at 50k shutter count. Image is definitely stunning, I would suggest get the Mobi-Wifi for mobile upload and faster sharing. Also, get the 35mm 1.8, use it first and you will appreciate the details the lens and camera will produce. 18-55 is sharp at 35mm, but at 55mm softness is visible. Get this, this has more than enough pro features that will last you several years. Unless you are a pro then just get the D4.

Camera and Lens

I bought the Nikon D5100 about a year ago, it came with the 18-55mm VR kit lens. All I can say is the camera and the lens are a winner! I bought a DSLR because I like to do more than set the camera to auto! However, It did take me some time to understand the camera menus, the picture quality is fantastic! Even on Auto.

Nikon vs Sony

I couldn't decide between the Nikon D5100 and the Sony a57 so i bought them both to try them out. Overall they were both great but in the end I chose the Sony. The colours and clarity on both were great as you would expect. The menu system on each are quite different but both very effective. The controls and buttons are different in each but again well placed. I found the Nikon optical viewfinder a bit harder to read but not by much. The deal breaker for me was how useless the Nikon live view system is as compared to the Sony system. With the Nikon you will wait a seconds for the live view to activate, then you will wait 2 or 3 more second for it to focus, you will wait another 2 seconds while the mirror flips up and down and then you will wait another second for your picture to appear on the screen. In low light conditions forget it, it will not focus at all. The Sony live view is simply amazing, live view starts and focuses instantly. Your picture is there as soon as you release the shutter button. In addition when the Nikon raises and lowers the mirror to focus it is quite noisy. I also liked the Sony's ability to shoot twice as many pics per second compared to the Nikon. In the end the decision was easy

Great Camera

Whether you are starting your journal into dSLRs, or you are experienced; the Nikon D5100 is a great camera for you. It has a variety of options to set to; so if you are a beginner, you can use auto, if you are experienced, you can use manual modes. The quality is great, only if you zoom extremely far in does it start to get slightly pixelated. Great camera overall.

D5100 rules.

Beautiful. Amazing picture and video quality. With improved shooting modes such as 1920x1080p video at 24fps, which was what I looked for as a filmmaker. The design is well executed and, unlike others, I like the button placement of the record button and live view switch. For photographers, this camera is a must have with all it's exciting built in features. As a video camera the D5100 is awesome, it delivers superb somewhat-saturated natural images before editing. I just love the look of the video images in-camera, it has this unexplainable professional look. The Nikon D5100 only lacks few manual control settings in video. You are not able to manually set the shutter speed or ISO. Although there is way to lock the ISO within the camera's menu settings which is an improvement and very useful. But do not fret, this NOT make the D5100 a bad camera in the least. Not at all. Nikon just needs to release a new firmware update that's all. Even with the one little problem, I still say get the Nikon! Overall, I love my Nikon, it produces stunning images and video. I would definitely recommend this to a friend. D5100 IS LIFE.

poor battery life....

not sure whether I just got a bad one.. but battery life is really bad.. I have about 250 shots then it's complaining of low battery... Other than that, I was pretty happy with it...
