The incomparable Constance Bennett (TOPPER) stars as an American wife in Paris in this overlooked gem of a WWII film. Kitty's marriage is on the rocks, and she and an older British friend, Emmeline (Gracie Fields) try to escape to the countryside, only to be rerouted by German forces. On their way back they pick up a young British soldier and smuggle him out of the country, but rather than accompany him in flight they stay behind to organize an underground organization. They manage to help over 200 Allied soldiers to safety, but are constantly dogged by the specter of apprehension and the swift hand of punishment. Directed by Gregory Ratoff (THE ROSE IN WASHINGTON SQUARE, THE MEN IN HER LIFE), this involving drama is superbly acted, and the score was deservedly nominated for an Oscar.
