awesome streaming box

I stream TV with PS3 and an Apple TV. I decided to purchase a Roku 3 to address issues with the others. Roku 3 is obviously smaller than the PS3 and my Apple TV is not doing so well with youtube. The Roku 3 has worked perfectly for me and I do not miss the Apple TV. Roku 3 is as fast, if not faster then the apple TV and it does Youtube like PS3. Online streaming is lightening fast for such a small unit. It plays media from a flash drive via a usb port and I have had to use the headphone jack in the remote a few times and it works perfectly. If there has been one flaw with the Roku, it has been the remote. I don't like it very much though it has not given any trouble. It's too smooth and rounded. It offers very little grip unless your hands are clammy. The ok button should be in the middle of the direction buttons like all other remotes. When you lay it down on a hard surface like a night stand or coffee table, it rocks back and forth annoyingly for several seconds. If some thought had gone into the remote, I would not have a single bad thing to say about this unit. I still give it 5 stars because it just works so well. I'm very happy with it.

Awesome!

I've had this product for a few days for such a small device it is very responsive. To get the most out of this device or any media device (Apple Tv, Chromecast etc) you must subscribe to a DNS service I use Adfreetime good old Canadian company also [price] a month another one is Unblockus basically this will get the most out of your device so you can watch American programming via Netflix and Hulu it also has NHL Gamcenter so I can watch my games now I pay a lot less for cable!

Roku is a great device.

Roku was excellent and I purchased three now. Between Netflix and YouTube you pretty much got everything. One oversight is there is no way to Web browse.. Why is that? I'm sure you can sideload something in but still seems like a major oversight. Why is there no web browser channel???

Roku waste of money

Bought it so I could get rid of expensive cable TV. The roku did wht it said, however every show that I could find was from the 70s or before. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but if you enjoy current tv this thing is not for you. Returned it to the store 1 hour after I purchased it.

Canadians Beware

The Roku 3 is a well designed and easy to use. I bought it based on the great industry reviews and library of offered channels. What i didn't know was that most of what I considered to be premium channels, would not stream their content in Canada. If you intend to use the device to rent movies, you can forget that ( at least for now). None of the rental channels, including Blockbuster Online or Amazon provide them North of the border. I confirmed this with Roku's customer service dept. directly. So if you are happy with the movie selection offered by Netflix or Crackle ,then go Roku...but if you want access to true movie access I would recommend you look to there major brands like WD and Apple TV

My thoughts

I had a Roku 2 xs and found it to work well but it seems to be forgotten and not getting timely updates. So I bought the Roku 3 to get all the updates. I find it to work slightly faster than my Roku 2 xs but that seems to be the only advantage . I don't think it lives up to all it's hype on how much better it is. At least I now have a Roku in my bedroom now.

Roku forces you to give them your credit card #

I already have my Netflix and other accounts set up so why do they force you to give them your credit card number to set up a Roku account. Dumb. Risky.

Roku 3 Rocks

I have a Roku 2 which I love and wondered if there was any point in upgrading. The earphone in the remote was attractive because my honey likes watching at night. In addition to that, the enhancements are very appealing. Clarity of picture is much better, as is the speed of loading content, options for locating Netflix shows, jitterfree performance and captioning. And a usb input! Fantastic overall and well worth the money.

Fnatastic

The Roku 3 is absolutely fantastic... once you install Plex. Plex is one of the free apps you can install via the built-in Roku App Store and Plex has it own app store where you can download some pretty amazing channels such as HGTV, Discovery, Disney, CBC, etc and each of these channels offers hundreds of hours of free full-length TV shows. The CBC channel even offers free live streaming for events such as Hockey Night In Canada. Plex also allows you to stream content from your computer and displays it in a 'Netflix format' pulling album covers and synopsis information from the internet. Roku's app store leaves a lot to be desired, but over the few weeks I've had it, quite a few channels have been added so it is definitely a work in progress, but there are definitely some good apps there you'll want to install. All in all, this device is a must have for anyone like me that has decided cable TV is simply too expensive and not worth it.

Very nice gadget

Works well for me. Using it primarily for YouTube, Netflix and Russian over the top TV: etvnet.com and bestrussiantv.com. Majority of other channels are useless for me. I like an integration with Android, ability to use my phone as a remote and to stream content from my phone on the big screen TV through Roku. Worth the price for sure.

not a cable replacement

tried it one week, can`t find any reason to keep it. Canadian content is so poor. Not a single free great channel besides netflix and crackle. If you need to watch content from a specific web site, you cant because there is no web browser. Since there is no qwerty keyboard on the remote control any search is pretty painful. The picture for netflix and crackle is pretty sharp though. The impression i have is that one day it will do enough to make people consider cutting their cable but for now, in Canada, it s next to useless.

Roku 3 Streaming Media Player Review

Great little addition to our home media! I wish that it had all the channels advertised in the USA! Canadian Channels are basic in comparison to what our neighbours to the south experience. Looking forward to new channels being added in the future! This was my first purchase online from Best Buy - top notch service!

So much in a little box

My wife and I bought one for our family about a month ago, trying to bring our cable bill down by cutting back to online programming. It didn't take long to fall in love with it. The ease-of-use is very impressive, including a clean UI and minimalist remote control. For even more Roku goodness, make sure you install the Plex app, so you can stream content from your PC direct to your Roku devices. We currently have two Roku 3s in our house and may even get a third so that we're fully connected.

great little box

While I consider myself a little bit technically challanged, the Roku 3 was an extremely easy set and the usb plug is an added bonus! Was considering a smart tv, but went with regular tv less than 1/2 the price and the roku. Canadian channels leave a bit to be desired.( You cannot change the dsn codes in the roku, but I figured out a way around that one ;) highly recommend!

Roku 3 and its big time flaw.

Easy to install and use. The big negative is that it keeps needing a factory reboot. I have had it less than 2 weeks and I have had to reboot the Roku 3 to Factory Settings 5 times. This means also resetting the remote and labouriously typing in all my Netflix information. I would definitely recommend that you DO NOT purchase a Roku 3 until the media informs you that this flaw is corrected.

Overpriced for what it does

I have owned other Media Streaming devices and find the Roku 3 overpriced for what it does. The achilees heel of this device is its limited support for audio and video formats. If you are happy streaming video from the internet only, then this device is for you. I would advise potential customers not to be drawn in by the marketing that advertises 450 streaming channels in Canada. Lets be serious, most people want this fot Netflix streaming only on older devices that do not have this abilility. Most of the other vhannels have limited content. Media streamed from local sources must have already been converted into the limited audio/video formats supported by Roku. When I rip my Blu-rays to MKV format, they maintain the same video format as they have on the source, which normally is not compatible with the Roku. Next you must convert, or transcode, the MKV video to be x264 video compliant. This conversion can take anywhere from 2 - 5 hours per video. Given that there are other media streamers which cost less, stream almost every known audio/video format and have the ability to stream from major internet sources (Netflix), I rate the Roku 3 to be highly overpriced. On the other hand, if you want Angry Birds with a wireless remote control, that also can stream from the internet, this device is for you. Given what other and cheaper streamers can do, I would rate this device as being worth no more than $60

product review

Don't buy this, it does not play half the media files I have on my external Hard drive (movies and TV shows) that is plugged into it. It freezes and doesn't even show the files from the external Hard Drive in alphabetical order even though the files are organized that way so you have to search for the movie you want. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old media player that both work perfectly and one of them only cost me $40. I bought this for my girlfriend thinking because it's the new thing they would have it all figured out by their third model, what a mistake. I am returning it.

Roku 3 Review

Purchase this item because I heard it has a lot of channels and good for streaming movies from my Plex Media Server. Pro : Fast and responsive quickly by navigating the menus. - Channels can be added on the web site online - Ear piece connected to remote was a great idea. - Great video quality. - Can be used with Logitech Harmony Remote. - Firmware updates can be apply for fixes. Con: Most of the good channels are only available for USA customers - Plex Media Server (Ex: Play videos from PC) buffering using a wired connection. (Note: could be software related) - No pre-loaded channel for streaming media from USB port. - Some channels requires to pay a monthly fee or subcription and not gurantee to work for Canadian customers. - Random crashes when opening or viewing channels (Note: Could be a bad channel or software)

Fabulous Device

Bought the Roku to add to our TV. Great product. It has as many TV apps as you would ever need and is in HD. The streaming is flawless and watching Netflix is perfect with no disruption. The Roku is very small and was easy to set up and does have a USB port as well for my own movies. A great addition to the TV and almost eliminates the need for cable.

Great product worth the money

I was suspicious of the product as I have a Ps3 that does a lot of media steaming for me. How ever A roku3 + Plex media server works much better than PS3 and PS3 media server combination. It also has a great assortment of online channel (and private channels) to give users the best experience. My only complain is the color and quality of the head phone(Then again hoping for more is a not fair for a ~100$ product)

Stream Dream

I purchased my Roku on boxing day to replace my apple tv. I am a huge apple fan with lots of apple products in my home, but the streaming capabilities of the apple tv blow. I purchased the Roku so to allow me to enjoy all of the media on my computer, not just the videos encoded in mp4 in my iTunes library. I found the learning curve to be short and the streaming capabilities to be awesome.

The death of cable T.V.

This box is great value, simple to use, stable, and very quick to gain access to all your different services in one place. The wired connection of the Roku 3 guarantee's no interference from too many wifi devices being around. Which can happen when you have friends over to watch something. Issues related to most cable alternatives such as lack of live sports are mitigated with this service with channels such as the NHL channel or MLB channel. These channels will require a paid subscription however what you get for your money will stil give you better value than a specialty cable package. The only real downside that I can see is the restricted CDN content but that is not a problem of the Roku, that is an issue of CDN copyright laws or lack thereof. So US broadcasters and publishers don't like releasing their material into Canada yet. I have a feeling that this will have to change eventually but it may be a while yet. Even so, you'll always find something to watch. Again, at this price it's just great value.

Great little box...alot of the content only US

The Roku does exactly what it promises streams content HD. Most content for the box is based on paid subscription which is cheaper than cable. Make sure you have a wireless N router or connect it by Ethernet for the best performance. With the PLEX app I have my own library with easy access and no delay. Netflix HD movies work great. The only downside to this box is that many of the best apps/channels are only available in the US. Some require a cable subscription such as HBO, and FOX. If you are tech savvy you can work around some of the issues which makes this box worth it. If XBMC were an app the Roku would benefit greatly.

Can't give it 5 stars...

This is a great unit, I chose it over the "2" because I wanted the processor speed and I'm very happy with the responsiveness of the unit. It has a nice clean interface and works as advertised. Here are a couple of things for the "con" column: When you are playing something in Netflix that you don't finish watching, when you come back to it there is no option to start from the beginning, only to resume where you left off. I can rewind the show to the beginning but that is tedious. The WD player offers an option to start from the beginning, hopefully Roku addresses this with a firmware update. The only other thing I would like to see, as many others have pointed out, is a Youtube option. Although, they are up front about the fact that Youtube is not included so I guess its your decision whether or not that is a deal breaker for you.

Outstanding

Paired with Plex and geo-unblocking, I have been very impressed with this device. My trusty old WD TV live now sits unused. I like the interface and numerous Channels available. My Logotech Harmony works well with it as well. I have read it is not the best with local or LAN video natively but since I stream to it via Plex, I have not experienced any video file that won't play. Do some Googling and you will find lots of help to maximize content available.

ROKU 3

This is a great media player. The interface is better than Apple TV. It's slick and fast and worth the money. My only complaint is that compared to my old WDTV, it isn't as easy to use with external media devices, like a USB drive. Also, the ROKU 3 no longer uses the old-fashioned patch cords (yellow, red, white connectors) so your TV MUST have an extra HDMI port. I am just starting to learn about adding private channels so I can't comment much on that other than it works similar to the Boxee "repositories". You can tap into free content that others post online. The physical size is compact with a modern look. You can add this into any decor because it's easy to tuck into any space and be barely noticeable. The overall quality appears to be exceptional. The remote contains sensors, similar to a smartphone that allows to play video games. It comes with Angry Birds for free. A very cool feature is that the remote has an audio jack and they provide a pair of earphones. When you plug into the remote, the TV is muted and the sound is patched through the remote earphones so you can watch a movie without getting out of your chair and disturbing others. Overall, I am extremely happy with this purchase!

Like being strong armed?

I was given this slick new media box for Christmas but unfortunately i can't even turn it on! Why you ask because it FORCES you to input all of your personal info and valid credit card info before you can even see the home screen. Roku goes as far as to bill your credit card $1 then refunds it to confirm your information is valid. If you thought you could use your already payed for netflix account or watch some free TV you are incorrect. I will be returning this and getting an android TV box. Also many features are not available because we are not is the US.

I already had Apple TV because I have an ipad but I had a problem in that I watch movies late at night when everyone else is sleeping,.as soon as I saw the Roku had headphones that was enough for me.They work great. But another problem arose, the Roku only has an H264 codec and I have a lot of movies downloaded in other formats so it's great for Netflix etc when I need the 'phones. So I then bought a WD which has all the codecs and some really good services.so I get to run all the stuff on my home network except for the dark hours but I can live with that.

The Roku 3 unit itself runs great ....both wired and wireless. Not a ton of good free channels and most are REAL old movies/tv and/or independant films. But if you want it as a NetFlix unit that is easily switched from tv to tv in your house without worrying about a direct LAN hookup.....it streams great.

Best Media Player Out There

This is by far the best media player out there, especially for tech people out there. Apple TV is great but just for Netflix streaming. Boxee is alright, but mine had the HDMI port die after only 9 months (and it's also slow). The Roku 3 is fast, buffers Netflix quickly and streaming any video over the network is extremely quick. I've also experienced lag issues streaming MKV files over the network with other media players, and so far have had no issues with the Roku doing the same thing. I highly recommend this as a media streaming solution, ESPECIALLY for any techies out there.
