Good but ...

In general, the product is nice ! Nice look, great speed but Roku said they have 1 00000 channels, but the channel is so boring or need subscription. I'm disappointed about a product that cost [price] and just give me a remote because a laptop can do all the thing that the roku do. When I bought the roky I expected more of a product as the roku give me.

Easy to hook up. Perfect picture quality. Easy to operate. Worth every penny. Would recommend it to anybody that is sick of high cable bills. The best streaming service available and when we are able to add more channels in Canada the Roku will be even more amazing..

Loving my Roku after 6 months of use

best $ i have ever spent great ..set up was very easy, uploads fast with no lag or freezing ..not a lot of Canadian content but is great for watching youtube on the big screen and netflix, crackle, CNN , RT ...etc... more channels come out every week ..some of them are pretty lame but there are some good ones ..its definitely worth buying and i would recommend it as a great buy ..lots of hidden chanels that really are not that hard to find ..i will be buying a few as gifts this Christmas for friends basically makes your television act like a smart TV but better .also great for streaming your own content from your home computer ....i am only giving it 4 stars because there is not a lot of Canadian content

Works as intended

I did my homework. Was enthusiastic but then came across some of the negative reviews here on BB. I took a chance and brought it home. After a couple weeks, I can now see where the others went wrong here. If people buy Roku for just the paid and free subscription channels and nothing else, or they will be very disappointed. Roku SHOULD be used with combinations of other streaming sources. My set up, Roku 2 + Netflix + Cravetv. If you miss your favorite shows, chances are they are on Netflix and Cravetv the next day. Plus, there are soooooooooooooooo many free streaming sites on the net...Roku 2 is well worth it.

I love it!

I have been using this for about a month now. There is a lot of free content, but nothing you would spend a lot of time watching. The great things about this device: -can control with your smart phone if you don't want to use your remote -can listen to the tv over headphones -can hook up a harddrive or usb stick to watch photos/video/music -can wireless connect to your computer for watching your files -can stream pictures from your phone (I think video too if you get the right channel) -Netflix!!! -If you have a US IP address, you can watch lots of TV on Amazon Prime or Hulu Plus ($$) -Can rent/buy most movies or shows. Even new shows like walking dead. -Has the HBO channel ($$) -Crackle is not bad. Has decent free movies and other content. I recommend buying the Roku Channel guide app for your smartphone (~$1) but is worth it. Worth it to have; but don't count on the free shows to be outstanding. They definitely add to the device and I have found a few I will be watching. I also have another similar android device and I prefer the Roku. It has a much better set-up. The thing I didn't like, was the poor selection of games. Hopefully more will be added over time.

Those that complain about the channel selection don't know what they are doing. Do some research. Figure out the benefits of DNS. This is an awesome device. Check out the private channels as well. There are about 1400 aps for it (so I've read). I only use about a dozen. Hulu, Netflx, Nowhere TV, Pokemon channel, yoga all get the most use in my home. Roku is also open platform -- meaning they don't push you to use certain in-house services the way others do.

don't buy it

All its good for is YouTube and Netflix. It has the worst channels ever besides that. There's a channel for mattresses. Really roku3? A few friends have different consoles that they paid the same for and are much better. I wish I could still return it.

Not too good

Most of channels and apps don't come with the device. There is only a few apps you can actually use... And, the system won't even allow you to create account without giving them your credit card info first. I returned mine and still get spam email from Roku although I removed account.

Yet Another Streamer

This product is great, I've been using it for some time already and I can say it's stable and fast, and user experience is very good. I'd recommend it over other streamers. Pros: Fast navigation is pleasing Supported an App my other streamer didn't Build quality Small, energy efficient and quiet Cons: Nothing outstanding compared to other streamers Cumbersome remote Resolution scaled down for the same stream using web browser and Roku 3, this may be avoided by having a fast connection 10Mb/s+

Underutulized and quickly going out of date.

I'll start with the good. It is a really decent Netflix player, as well as the other usual things like Crackle. If there are other good ones like Hulu etc. there not for Canadians. As was the style a few years ago, if it doesn't come with Angry Birds, it's garbage, and the Roku doesn't fail you here. Good thing you are still dying to play some more angry birds right? Right?? Other than that Roku is a wasteland of worthless channels.

Bought to watch Netflix and discover other channels as well, too much B/W outdated garbage movies..what is good you pay for ..some channels try to get you to pay anywhere from a $1 and up for crap TV. Like I said way to many B/W TV...if you like that stuff great have fun to me its garbage. Movies such a TOP GUN etc.. you will pay for. In my opinion these type of movies are already outdated and old but they make you pay to see them. Not worth the money my xbox gives me that...

Not very good!

Stay away, I found out that after I purchase it it did not have any channels that were supposed to have come with. I returned it, the 1000+ channels is for the US NOT Canada, you will not get many channels if any good ones. Cheers

Roku (no candien channel)

So, Take your time and really look at there website and google: Channel List Roku Canada. Its a tinny list with nothing good like HGTV, yes it has Netflix but not worth the time or money, if you have Netflix already on PS3... It horrible, how they say 1000channels when there are only a few in Canada, returning mine!

Can`t add any channels !!

Very disappointed. They claim that you have hundreds of free channels but i can`t add any new channels . Not even YouTube!!!!! Not on the website , not through the box..... OK for Netflix and Crackle . Until Roku fixes their issues in Canada , i would not buy it .

Bug that won't allow channels to be added

Apparently, there's an issue with the current firmware that won't allow channels to be added in Canada (even those available here, like Crunchyroll). So apart from Netflix, NHL Gamecenter, and a few other channels, almost no – I mean 0 – additional channels can be added on the device. As such, I'll be sticking with my Chromecast.

I purchased this for my mom who wanted to watch netflix, crunchy roll and stream YouTube shows into her TV. This did everything! The free apps are more tailored to Americans but for the basics, it's great. Only thing is the price. Too bad it wasn't cheaper or on sale.

I really like this product, but it's only as good as your internet connection. I find that somtimes it hangs when the connection has issues and I cannot use it if I am downloading something at the same time. Still, really enjoy it and the JW broadcasting channel is terrific.

Just what I needed

I am not a "techy" person and just wanted a device to watch Neflix with. This was exactly what I needed....very simple to use and does what I expected it to....and a lot more. (I'm still finding out things it does that I didn't know before)

Doesn't play .avi files

Product is pretty simple. Setup requires internet connection. You have to register your device online before using it. My initial idea was to play all my movie files. This player will not play .avi which is still an Internet standard. It does play the .mp4 files. I returned the unit and bought the WD TV Live with is very simple and plays all the movie files so far. Plus it can connect on BELL MEDIA HUB Router to stream your local files. I would by the Roku3 if it had the .avi support.

Not For Canadians

I've had the Roku 3 for about a year now. If you want a simple and easy unit it is a great deal. It is stunningly fast, and the built in earjacks are great. However Most of the free channels are repackaged u-tube channels. There is no Shomi Channel and no web browser so you can't access Shomi that way either. All local video has to be changed to MP4 Canadian Netflix does not have a lot of contect. Roku has set up the machine to use Google DNS. Sites which allow canadians to view US content by changing th DNS does not work with Roku and Netflix.

Technically the Roku is very slick as compared to WD Media player. Pros: - quick to load and execute commands - variety and quantity of content - great wireless connectivity - good remote, does not require line of sight Cons: - requires registration and credit card info to activate - data entry does not support wireless keyboard - some content is not accessible in Canada

Poor customer experience

Like many, I bought the Roku 3 . Received it by courier, registered it by the Dec 31st deadline and waited for the promotion e-mail as instructed on their site. Didn't receive the promo code so I contacted their Live Chat and they said the promotion was not available due to high demand. No offer or attempt to substitute the value or keep me as a customer. It's an OK device, but they need to work on their customer experience. I'm returning it to the store at the next opportunity

Hyped and Overpriced Product

I rarely write a harsh review but I was very unimpressed by the Roku: (-) Cannot properly handle most media file types through DNLA or USB (and no I am not interested in Plex). I would expect the Roku to be able to handle this part out of the box since this is supposed to be a media hub. The sad part is that my 6 year old TV handles DLNA and USB inputs better. (-) Very basic image or sound processing(no proper up scaling or other) (-) And to follow up on the previous point, the settings menu has like 3 options... (-) Well this one was already mentioned: Limited content for Canada and most of it is of poor quality. The channels that matter (to me at least) I can already directly access through my TV or Blu-ray player Given all the positive reviews I read for the Roku before giving it a try, I'm thinking that maybe people's expectations of what a media device should do are different from mine or are just lower. The end result anyhow is that I returned it and got a Sony Blu-Ray player instead. The Sony can read, out of the box, any type of media file I throw at it over DNLA or USB. It can also stream all the media channels that have good or decent content. The picture and sound processing is better. On top of that it can read my DVDs and Blu-rays. And really the main reason I am bringing this up is because the Sony was cheaper too...

Wonderful stuff

Great Product, If you like to stream US content just purchase a legit DNS service for a couple of bucks/month (google ad-free time) can be found online and it will unlock all US content. Works like a charm.

Best for Netflix & Other Paid Services

The Roku 3 Interface is great. Very easy to use, and quite fluid. Netflix's interface on this Roku is by far the best I've ever seen and used. Not many "Free" content on this device, if you live in Canada. There's a lot of things very limiting for us Canadians. A way to get around this is to install the PlexServer. Then you can get a lot more content via Roku 3. Go online and learn how to use this. There is also a work around, if you are trying to get USA Netflix to work on this Roku 3. You will need a Router. Set up your Router and it works great. You can find info online on how to do this. My only complaint is there's absolutely no customization with this device. Very limiting in that respect. Do I recommend it? Absolutely , especially for Paid Content such as Netflix and Crackle. Also use PAYPAL when you are registering your ROKU 3, don't give them your Credit Card Number.

Really amazed

I bought this device and was really excited to use it, however, after the player failed to play some of my MP4 files and could not mirror screen my Samsung Tab 4 or my Note 3 I was really displeased and planned on returning it. However, after looking on the Google app store I found an updated patch for the tablet and the Note 3 called ScreenMirrorPatch and behold the the mirror screen worked ! That means you dont need to covert MP4 or MKV, because you can use vlc player from your tab or phone and screen it on your TV !! Amazing! ! Sometimes there is a bit choppiness but overall very pleased. For the customers that complain that there are a lack of channels dont worry because it can screen mirror from your tab or smart phone . Well, Im sure you can figure out what I am getting at. For those that returned this product because of the credit card info that you have to provide, that can easily be bypassed by putting the wrong credit card numbers in, which allows you to still use the player. Overall very pleased now I can watch my movies ( MP4 or MKV ) and screen mirror to my TV !! Thanks Roku you made my day !

Bad experience

Customer service for Roku is horrible. Purchased at this time to take advantage of the $25 credit with Cineplex, but received nothing. 2 weeks and 3 complaints later, they have changed the excuse a couple of times but offered nothing. Not sure why it's so complicated to give out a coupon code. They advertise that a code would be given withing 3-4 days. Weekend problem solving is not available. Picture is clear, but a bit laggy at times. Standard aps aren't worth the price of the device, so a user would need to find or pay for quality media sources.

Gotta love Roku 3

This is my second Roku 3. I bought one 1 year ago for the main TV and I wanted a second to replace my old western digital box that was running on my second tv. I mainly use Roku 3 for Plex and Netflix. The Netflix App is slick and fast vs some of the competitors. The Plex App is not nearly as nice as the Plex for Home Theater on Windows but it is still slick and fast. An added bonus for Android and IOS phone users, there is a free app that lets you go into Youtube, Plex, Netflix, Videos, Music ... on your phone and throw it on the TV. All and all I find Roku better then Apple TV or Western Digital Live box. I am giving it 5 stars because it is the best device I have used so far on a TV set. Sure it has its limitations but all the other boxes have many more.

awesome streaming box

I stream TV with PS3 and an Apple TV. I decided to purchase a Roku 3 to address issues with the others. Roku 3 is obviously smaller than the PS3 and my Apple TV is not doing so well with youtube. The Roku 3 has worked perfectly for me and I do not miss the Apple TV. Roku 3 is as fast, if not faster then the apple TV and it does Youtube like PS3. Online streaming is lightening fast for such a small unit. It plays media from a flash drive via a usb port and I have had to use the headphone jack in the remote a few times and it works perfectly. If there has been one flaw with the Roku, it has been the remote. I don't like it very much though it has not given any trouble. It's too smooth and rounded. It offers very little grip unless your hands are clammy. The ok button should be in the middle of the direction buttons like all other remotes. When you lay it down on a hard surface like a night stand or coffee table, it rocks back and forth annoyingly for several seconds. If some thought had gone into the remote, I would not have a single bad thing to say about this unit. I still give it 5 stars because it just works so well. I'm very happy with it.

I've had this product for a few days for such a small device it is very responsive. To get the most out of this device or any media device (Apple Tv, Chromecast etc) you must subscribe to a DNS service I use Adfreetime good old Canadian company also [price] a month another one is Unblockus basically this will get the most out of your device so you can watch American programming via Netflix and Hulu it also has NHL Gamcenter so I can watch my games now I pay a lot less for cable!

Roku is a great device.

Roku was excellent and I purchased three now. Between Netflix and YouTube you pretty much got everything. One oversight is there is no way to Web browse.. Why is that? I'm sure you can sideload something in but still seems like a major oversight. Why is there no web browser channel???

Roku waste of money

Bought it so I could get rid of expensive cable TV. The roku did wht it said, however every show that I could find was from the 70s or before. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but if you enjoy current tv this thing is not for you. Returned it to the store 1 hour after I purchased it.

Canadians Beware

The Roku 3 is a well designed and easy to use. I bought it based on the great industry reviews and library of offered channels. What i didn't know was that most of what I considered to be premium channels, would not stream their content in Canada. If you intend to use the device to rent movies, you can forget that ( at least for now). None of the rental channels, including Blockbuster Online or Amazon provide them North of the border. I confirmed this with Roku's customer service dept. directly. So if you are happy with the movie selection offered by Netflix or Crackle ,then go Roku...but if you want access to true movie access I would recommend you look to there major brands like WD and Apple TV

My thoughts

I had a Roku 2 xs and found it to work well but it seems to be forgotten and not getting timely updates. So I bought the Roku 3 to get all the updates. I find it to work slightly faster than my Roku 2 xs but that seems to be the only advantage . I don't think it lives up to all it's hype on how much better it is. At least I now have a Roku in my bedroom now.
