I have a Imac and the hard drive seagate 5 Terra works very well!

Not for Macs

If you have a Mac, skip this drive. It's pre-formatted for Windows and the reformatting process is a long and painful one. I wish I had not bought this paperweight.

good hard drive

Cons. This hard drive is fast enough. Crystal Disk Mark registered next results: Read - 185 MB/sec Write - 156 MB/sec Pros. Limited functionality of the backup software.

So far so good

I've already transferred almost a TB into the drive and it's working fine so far. It's all about waiting until when this hard drive will last.

ALOT of space for cheap, but buy 2 of them

I am associated with a data recovery company, and they see many of these drives (so called "7200.14" or with a "DM" in the model number) that develop bad sectors, and soon thereafter become inaccessible. So, when using this as a Backup drive, make sure your data is in TWO places,. else, buy another one and copy your data there too. Just sayin' based on current state of affairs. Second paragraph is just good direction no matter what "backup" drive you buy. "Backup" always should mean your data's in two places.

Works as advertised

I needed a new external hard drive when my Western Digital MyBookLive just stopped working one day. Didn't want to buy another WD. Did some Googling and found this Seagate highly recommended. I've had it a month. It works just fine, as does the backup software that came with the drive.

Software Should be on drive

This is a backup drive, so why don't they include backup software on the drive itself? Even if you had to install and update it, they should at a minimum have a link on the drive. Other than that, setup was easy, but it did take a bit to find the OneDrive special offer. I have backed up all my drives (including 3 other external / portable drives, and they all fit no problem. Having 5 TB is great - now I have room on my portable drives.

Good value for the price

Easy to install but wouldn't let me to set password no matter how I tried. Enough space to back up my 5 computers and leave room for future.

Very Slow

I'm a pro videographer, so I am always looking for highest capacity at lowest price but speed is important too. Contrary to the many other Seagate drives I've purchased, this unit has no performance specs either on the box or online. This drive was on sale at Best Buy who said they cannot take a refund on hard drives, so I called Seagate directly in the USA to ask them the data transfer speed of this device. After 35 minutes on hold, the agent said he spoke with engineering and the specs are "proprietary information". He meant to say "so slow, we're embarssed to publish the numbers". My partner bought one of these units and proved me right. In practical use, he experienced avg. 70 MB/sec transfer speed. This drive is good if you want to just park data on it forever. If you want speed, you'll need to buy their faster version which is much more expensive.

Works like a charm

I actually ordered a different drive on a Boxing Day Sale, That drive was no longer available so this one was offered in it's place at the same price. I'm really happy with it, it's just used for storage and play back of my digital library but it works just as well as the other drives I have doing the same thing. It was actually recognised on the network faster than the others. Price was great, easy to install and seems to be working well so far.

Good product for the price..however...

The instructions to install this drive on a Mac (OSX) are rather lousy...when in fact is so easy to install. Took couple of minutes for the reformat. I have been using it as a spare drive for backup/time machine and independent drive. performance looks fine so far. Power supply must be used. Not enough power from the USB.

Great Hard Drive

I only buy Seagate drives because I find them reliable. One portable Seagate drive I dropped many times and put through a lot of abuse smashing into things in a bag and was surprised to find it still working, they are well built too. I had this drive for only a couple weeks but just like all my other Seagate drives it works right out of the box whether on mac or pc. This one comes with free software that let's your mac read windows ntfs formated drives and vice versa you can read mac formated drives on a pc. There is no power button on the drive, it turns on when you connect it to your computer through usb 3. It also works with older machines that only have usb 2. I find these drives to be of great value and they perform their intended use well. My oldest Seagate drive is over 5 years old and in good shape, so longevity is still being tested. I've had the much more expensive LaCie drives before and one failed after less then 3 years. Overall I'm happy with this product. 5tb that's a lot of space.

Seagate Backup Plus 5TB External Hard Drive

I like this External Hard Drive. I find it is quiet and doesn't get hot. True, it does not have an ON/OFF button but that doesn't bother me, one can always unplug it.

Drive Constantly Mounts and Dismounts

I connected the drive to my Widows 7 PC, via USB 3.0. While copying files, the drive dismounted and after a while, remounted. File transfers were stopped. I left the drive simply sit there, attached. The drive dismounted and remounted itself 5 times over a span of 10 minutes. I did not install the provided software to copy files. I simply wanted a large drive to back up my files, using a simple drag and drop. I own 2 other Expansion Desk Drives by Seagate, and neither one requires the software to copy files to and from. A simple search online reveals many people are experiencing this same issue, some related to the drive sleeping, but Seagate is unable to resolve it. I did. I returned it.

Inconsistent Drive Properties

Bought this as one off to backup server and found out that the available space is all over the place. Sometimes it showed that it was almost full and sometimes it showed almost empty. Definitely could not trust it. The Samsung software (not compliant with server operating systems for some reason) says it was almost empty which was probably correct but not sure why it lies to Windows. Never seen a drive lie like that. I tried it on a Windows 7 PC and it did the same thing. The lack of a power switch is annoying and the power and USB connectors on the back look really cheap and flimsy. Not a drive you would want to move much. I am taking it back and getting something better.

No ON/OFF switch ???

It has no on/off switch, so it is always running, always turning, even when the computer is off.

Great drive

Bought this primarily as an expansion drive for my Xbox One, but decided first to see if I could also use it as a Media drive on the One as well. Works for both, so I will be buying another one to bounce back and forth from the PC to the Xbox. Took off one star because it doesn't have a power switch, which means it runs all the time, unless you unplug it.

Good price for 5TB

For internal, mainly NAS drives, I swear by WD Red's. Never had a problem with them. OTOH, like many people, I was 'inconvenienced' by the Seagate 'click of death' issues many years back. However for external *USB* based drives, I find them more reliable than the offerings by WD, which I've had some issues with. Can't wait for USB3.1 offerings in the future, for speeding up back-ups!

It would get all 5 stars if it had an on/off power switch.

The perfect hard drive!

This hard drive is fast and worked great when I hooked it up to my wireless network hard drive adapter its very quiet and doesn't get to hot with it's large size it is the perfect hard drive and you can't beat the price!

huge capacity :-)

Simple to use. Just three annoying points: - no switch to power off the drive - no discret led showing activity (on the other hand it is very discreet at night) - no SAS connectivity Good points: - very compact - silent when running

Slow is my overall impression

It is slower than my WD Mybook, but it's decent for the price as an extra data storage. No need to install the software dashboard, its reaction time is as slow as you can imagine.

Good backup drive

I use this drive for Time Machine backups for my iMac. It's a little slower than my LaCie (probably due to the fact that the Seagate is a 5600 rpm drive) but it does the job, and the price I paid made it a bargain for this much storage. I ditched the included software and reformatted it first and it works fine.

Seagate backup plus 5 tb

In order for my computer to reboot with it attached I had to get rid of the plus options. It has great storage and is quick when transferring information onto it. I have copied my music, photographs, and movies onto it. I had my super8 videos converted and would hate to lose my childhood movies. I have used the Seagate external hard drives before and have had no problems and that is why I went with this one. The price for this product is great.

Reliable but slow

Always use Seagate Backup. The best one is 2T USB3. Others are either two slow or cannot backup Window 7 professional [most of the time] using Window 7's backup and restore. Still using it mainly because of its reliability. It takes forever to transfer Seagate 3TB Backup into 5TB Backup. Software designed for transfer won't help.

Great storage for a photographer

As a photographer I require an external hard drive to ensure that my photographs are kept safe. This 5 tb external hard drive is perfect to ensure that.
