The absolute WORST product out there

Finally stopped buying these and started to rent from Shaw Satellite... They work fine for about six months then they start to crash. Sometimes once a week some times once a day and sometimes once an hour. They are in need of re-booting ALL THE TIME in order for the thing to find channels that we subscribe to. Constantly getting the error message that the receiver has lost it's signal, yet every other Digital receiver in the house is fine. Not much good when you want to record something on the channel that the PVR has lost it's signal. Totally unreliable and less than useless if you are away and wanting to record something, because you have to go check to make sure it is actually recording and not "lost" the fricking signal AGAIN. Do NOT waste your money on this piece of junk. IF you need a PVR then rent one from them because they WILL crash and you will need to replace it, again, and again, and again, and again....

Decent enough

Unit works fine mostly but does have the occasional glitch. Less glitchy than Bell's though.

Compare to Directv

This PVR can't compete with DirecTv DVR . Very antiquated technology. Of course, we are Canadian so we'll accept with gratitude overpriced inferior products because we have so few people. Ya right.

No glitches yet

Bought as gift for household. Seems to be working as advertised. I was reluctant after reading some of the terrible reviews but so far, no regrets. Already used the "smart record" feature with success and I'm thrilled with being able to skip commercials. It's liberating.

Works like it should

I have had one of these for a couple of years now and it has worked flawlessly. No complaints. It didn't get 5 stars due to the occasional reboot during recording. The technology to ensure recording an entire sporting event could use some work as well if a game goes into OT you better have set it to record the program after the scheduled game or you'll miss the end of the game. I have just purchased a second pvr 630 and am overall happy with the product.

Save your money!

I wish I would have looked more into Bell receivers. I purchased two of these Shaw PVRs, and both have daily issues with freezing up, not stopping when you press fast forward (it will not stop - everything locks until the entire program is over or until you unplug the receiver from the wall). Sometimes, they will just switch channels for no reason (yes, I set the remotes so that they were separate). These are junk. If I had bought just one and it was bad, I could say it was a lemon, but two of them doing the exact same thing? No way - terrible product. If you enjoy frustration and watching pixelated frozen screens instead of the program you thought you recorded, as well as unplugging and re-setting your PVR at least once a day, buy one of these!

[...] GREAT....until it starts failing

I am about to get my 6th replacement receiver in 2 years. Every-time it is the same couple of things. 1)starts auto re-booting every 15 minutes or 2)the main board ceases to talk to the hard drive Shaw has sent out tech's to test everything, install always passes. Our other two HD receivers non-PVR work great. That said ..Shaw has been good replacing units and the picture quality beats the other satellite receivers from that other service provider

Works Fine for 6 Months Then....

Receiver has begun to crash on a daily basis. Half the recorded programs have frozen on playback and have had to be deleted. Wait for a newer model. Don`t think they have the bugs worked out on this one yet.

Has been perfect for months!

I've used a number of different PVRs, and this is by far my favourite. Sure, there were some issues when I first got it in 2010, but it's gotten significantly better with each software update. It's been easy for everyone in my family to use and schedule recordings, and if you take the time to learn some of the "advanced" features this is where it really shines. Combined with Shaw Direct's awesome service and signal reliability (maybe out twice a year for ~10 minutes each time) I give it 5 stars.

Works fine

Bought the pvr a month ago ( along with non-pvr receivers as well ). The 630 works fine : picture & sound quality is great , the recording function does just that : records and playback is nice . Unit has optical audio out for those with older 5.1 sound system , as well as component out on top of the handy hdmi . Only thing : I would have preferred the 500gb hd that is offered in another receiver that they don't offer in Quebec . Maybe the eSata output will be used ...

Avoid this product!

This unit works intermittently, we are on our third unit. First unit crashed often, would not record, and playback recordings. Second unit will not turn on. According to customer service these are unrelated issues if you discount the fact that this system is junk and needs more development to work properly. My advice to you is too avoid this product.

Awesome Piece of Kit!!

I almost decided not to buy this product after reading all the negative reviews. I was assured that I could return it for a full refund within 30 days however so I decided to take a chance - and am very happy so far. The features are really easy to use and make watching the shows I want to watch much easier to fit into my schedule. The search function is especially useful. Earlier versions may have had issues, but the current machine lives up to its billing. Well done!

Great design, operating disaster

I have owned a DSR530 since 2005, upgrading to the 630 late last year. While the design of the 630 is a major improvement over the 530 the execution leaves much to be desired. The 630 is simply not ready for prime time. Particularly satisfying design improvements include; - extending the program guide from two days to two weeks (but be careful – the networks sometimes change their schedules) - enhanced programming options (e.g. the unit can find and record your favourite programs) - program guide search capabilities (truly wonderful to find when a missed program might be rebroadcast) - simultaneous recording of two different programs and - enhanced program information (love knowing which shows are reruns and which are new). Too bad many of the improvements are not reliable. Perhaps most vexing of the units operating faults is the tendency to fail to record programs. On the first failure I thought I might have made a programming error but careful watching of the frequent recurrences convinced me otherwise. Often a scheduled recording stays listed for several days beyond the programmed recording time then quietly disappears from the list without explanation or action of any sort. The recording error rate of my unit is running around 30% if one counts late starts of programmed recordings, inexplicably extended recordings (often running into a subsequent recording), missing sections of recordings (presumably caused by unexpected reboots) as well as the already mentioned missed recordings. If it is important to have a program recorded, I use another recording option. I understand Shaw is working on rectifying the 630’s problems with future software upgrades. Maybe. But that’s what they said with the 530 and not much happened there.

Avoid this PVR. Constantly reboots for no reason. Will often not record scheduled programs. Will creash when forwarding or rewinding live TV.

Avoid this product - POOR Quality

Very BUGGY, playback of recorded programs is jumpy and poor quality. Expect an abnormallly long time for channel to reappear when surfing up and down channels. Unit needs to be unplugged to reset OFTEN, or you will not get 50% of the channels you are paying for. According to Shaw rep "product is new and has problems but fixes are supposed to come..." Shaws other receivers have problems as well but this one is by far the worst

One month of use.

I am generally pleased with the 630. This is my first PVR experience and I do like the alpha search and the record options. I find the channel changes in TV mode a bit slow, and searching for program by date is also a bit time consuming. I would recommend this to all Shaw Digital subscribers.

Decent receiver with some issues

After using my Shaw Direct HD PVR 630 for month and a half here are my impressions. Pro's: HDMI Connector Small Form Factor Good HD Picture Quality Search Feature Hide Unsubscribed Channels Record Programs by Name Con's: Crashes and Resets Once in a While Responds Slowly to Remote control Setting up Recordings confusing at First Overall not bad, but not great either. I expected things like channel changing and on screen guide to load faster, not slower than the Older 530 PVR. I am told that these are things that will be improved soon in future software upgrades. If you are trying to decide between the older 530 HD PVR and the HD PVR 630 I would buy this one. Because the 530 may become obsolete as it is not capable of tuning to MPEG-4 HD channels which Shaw will be launching in the late 2011 and then converting existing HD channels from MPEG-2 HD to MPEG-4 HD. Spend the extra money and get something more future proof. If you want to find out more about the Shaw Direct HD PVR from real people like me search digitalhome on google and read the forums.
