Maybe i'm just lucky ??

As a counterpoint to all the negative reviews here, I will say that I hesitantly got one of these about 6 months ago and it works just fine...It was somewhat slow to get it activated (re-booted repeatedly) but in the end it has not given me any problems.

We needed a new pvr so got this one.

Our older one worked fine until a power outage. Then it died. So a tech came out to verify that our feed was good, and it seemed to be as the basic box worked fine. I got this pvr from Best Buy and could not get it to work with the lady at shaw on the phone. A tech came out and spent 2 hours trying to get it started up. He finally found a cut in one of the exterior wires and got it working. ( I forgot to mention he tried 3 other boxes and none of them would start up) For hours after it was very sluggish taking up to 10 seconds or more to respond to the remote. Could not go up or down one channel for hours. Then that evening everything seemed fine. Today as I was simply changing a channel it froze then went off line. So back on the phone, the girl could not get us connected. So another tech is coming out tomorrow, but what the heck is he going to do? I have now started to find several people who tell of what a piece of junk this thing is. I have a feeling it may be that our feed is just not strong enough to handle the needs of this box as our basic box works fine still.....I can not trust this product seems very flakey.

Latest and Greatest from Shaw????

Sure the unit provides a much better user interface to the Shaw offerings, but is ripe with problems. The most annoying is when the audio and video go 'out of sync'. I'm not sure if it is caused from incoming errors in the signal, but VERY often the audio will repeat in a short loop then be behind the video. It like watching a bad kung fu movie! Switching channels, then back again, it will 're-sync' itself. This also happens when fast forwarding a recorded program or when coming back to a paused live show. One other issue I have is that when I pause the unit or when an error in the signal, my new Sony TV display's 'unsupported audio signal'. This is using an HDMI cable between the devices. My older Motorola units certainly do not do this.

Update on my experience

I did come across a problem with this pvr box noticing a delay in response time when interacting with the device with my remote. From changing channels to playing my recorded shows. First thing I did to try to correct this problem was to do a reboot by unplugging everything. There were times with success and times I needed to call for help from Shaw. Calling Shaw was no help but I finally figured out the problem, cable splitter box! Either I need a new splitter box or to get rid of splitting the cable signal. I guess because of the HD quality of the picture, the box requires a stronger signal than the lower quality box I had before.

Don't buy it!

This product is just awful. I'm very disappointed with it for a number of different reasons. I complained to Shaw and they couldn't suggest a good alternative. It sometimes resets itself to the beginning when I haven't done anything, the information that comes on the screen when fast forwarding or replaying etc. is very big and you can't see the screen, I don't like how it shows the timing and the close captioning is terrible and can't be properly adjusted. I wouldn't even give this product any stars because it isn't worth it.

PVR schedule is not updated frequently enough, especially SPORTSNET. PVR Freezes too often, necessitating pulling the plug and waiting for PVR to reboot. On the positive side, picture is improved over previous Motorola PVR. This is an ARRIS and needs improvements via firmware updates. SHAW seems to be very slow in addressing PVR problems with this unit (DCX3510-M).

Great PVR!

Bought this new Arris Shaw PVR to replace my old Shaw Motorola that was 12yrs old and still working (well almost) fine. Heard and read stories how awful these units are and the bugs they possess. I really thought about just going to Telus Optik but did some more checking on the Shaw PVR and I am glad I did. Its just a firmware update that was required and budda bing budda boom I have a fine PVR that is light years ahead of the Motorola!! It has many options to configure from the settings menu and after reading the complaints about these PVRs many issues can be remedied by just going to settings and doing some adjustments from there....Many people just go straight to whining and complaining before even doing a little research first.. Have no regrets buying this PVR at all...Love it!!!

DXC3510 HD PVR 500 GB Shaw

I've been wanting a PVR for quite sometime now as I would like to record my shows and not have to circle my life around them and watch them when I want with no commercials. I've been looking at this unit for sometime now but the price tag was very high, but it came on sale for $240 and I purchased it. Best PVR you can get from Shaw without a portal. Hook up was easy with HDMI cable going to the box to the TV for full 1080P HD what a difference in my 65"!!! Cable cord goes from wall to the cable box and then of course the power block to power the unit. Went on the live shaw chat with SN number and hook up was fast and easy! I love the look of the unit being smooth shinny black with bright white LED time and blue led for when it's on or off. It's also got small writing on the front that lights up when in use - example when a show is recoding it will say "rec" in red so you know if there is something recording or not. Until interface is easy to use with the new HD black guide set up, shows your channel number, HD or not, on demand or not. Recording has been a breeze and I have 25 series set to be recording I'm following. Unit has not gave me any trouble and glad I finally bought one! Love it!

Dont Buy This Box

if you want to watch lots of recorded shows don't buy this box, most recordings skip all the way thru, box resets for no reason and locks up often. don't waste your money.

Good initially but.......

Bought this unit 4 months ago to replace Motorola unit which stopped working after a power outage. Set up was reasonably simple following the online instructions. All was good for the first couple of months then the frustration started. The whole reason I record programs is so I can skip through the ads. This was good at first. Pressing the "skip" button forwarded 30 secs each press. Then randomly the display would skip 2-10 secs ahead but would take up to 30 seconds for the program to re-start. Still having an issue with this now. The FFW freezes too so I don't know of another workaround. The channel guide is sometimes unresponsive so when paging up/down it can take a few seconds to change then the pages catch up, you then have to go the other way to get to where you needed . Auto recording of HD channel is a good idea. Being the only dual tuner PVR unit Shaw has now, I have to have wait till they sort out the issues ( First world problem, I know :) ). Considered going with another carrier but I have phone and internet bundled with no issues with either. Shaw please hurry up and fix the problems or you will start losing more customers

Never came across any problems mentioned by the other reviewers. Maybe its because its an Arris and not a motorola or Shaw had some major updates in the operating system. The thing I do miss from my previous PVR is the option to navigate while watching a recorded show like switching to a live broadcast or just browse the tv guide. Also I miss setting up a full screen favourite channels guide and the only favourite I have access to are the shows currently playing. A nice thing about the guide is that it only shows the channel I have access to according to my package deal.

Shaw DCX3510m

This pvr and Shaw's response to acknowledging it's problems are crap!! 6 phone calls, 7 resets, 2 in home tech visits all in last 3 weeks. I'm back to using my old one. Stay away unless you enjoy a lot of grief! Couldn't rate it below no stars!

Defective software and hardware

The DCX3510 has numerous ongoing defects that have not been addressed by Shaw. Here's a list of the ones I've encountered after owning it for about 2.5 years, that continue to not be addressed: - recordings will occasionally lock themselves for content (even if you don't even use parental controls). The workaround is to unplug the box and plug it back in .... which works. Plain software defect. - the fastforward function will jump you back between 5s-60s (no way to know how long) when you stop fastforwarding. Sometimes it will even jump you back further than where you started! - recordings will sometimes have 'blank/blackscreens' at random intervals, apparently some defect in the way it records. - recordings for 'series' recordings will randomly fail to record episodes, even without any conflicts or other recordings around that time - it may just randomly decide not to record a particular episode. - recordings will sometimes be randomly cutoff, without any conflicting recordings. - the box will occasionally freeze up when you are moving through the menu - there is often lag when navigating the menu, and sometimes it will completely stop responding then catch up every button you pressed a few minutes later - the box will occasionally go to showing "PSLD" or "BOOT" and get stuck there, with no functioning until unplugged and plugged back in. - there is no picture in picture or frame by frame advance functionality

Poor implementation of software

Nice and small, easy to fit in but once you start navigating the frustration begins. I don't watch SD channels, all my HD channels are nicely grouped together. With the new box they are all over the place because if a channel is SD and HD, the SD channel broadcasts in HD and the HD channel is not there. What a dogs breakfast of channels and trying to navigate across my tight bundle of HD is now frustration city. No thanks - bye bye new MPEG 4 channels - not worth the bother. What puzzles me is it is only software that does this, make it an optional feature you can turn on or off and bang you're back in business.

Do not buy...

I recently upgraded from my old 3400 series PVR, and this new one has many flaws in its software, I noticed the comments dating back a year ago, and Shaw still has not addressed the deficiencies and released a solid firmware update. The only functionality that works is the new guide. All other functionality is less superior than the previous products. not being able to bring up the guide from PVR menu is crazy... every time you pause a program and the next program slot begins it jumps to live. It cuts off PVR recordings and has issues with scheduling multiple programs on the dual tuners...Shaw please do something quick!

I would give it a zero rating if I could

Simply put do not buy this product...the user interface is a step down from the previous hardware version. It constantly locks up and freezes. Deletes endings of shows. Doesn't record shows you've scheduled even though it has a "little red dot" beside the show name. PVR needs constant rebooting because it locks up. It will update it's firmware right in the middle of you watching tv, or recording a program, therefore you losing what you were recording. Stay away! Go with the Gateway sytem or an entirely other cable service provider.

Excellent HD PVR

This new modem HD PVR is excellent. Much faster than the older model I retired and the new guide is excellent. No more scrolling through channels I don't even get. I recommend this unit.

Nice new Guide...but missing some key features

Picked up this unit on sale to try it out. Was thinking this would be an upgrade from my 3416 model. Gotta admit, liked the new Guide look, more modern. Tho, in the end, took it back the next day and will stick with my 3416 for now till Shaw comes up with something better PVR wise or replaces their Gateway offerings. This unit missing two key features which were the deciding factors for me returning it: 1) Can't extend any recordings (to start early or end later) unless it's a "live" show. 2) Can't view Guide at all when watching a recording. Com'on Shaw, get with it. Many other bad reviews on this DCS3510 model. As the others say, buyer beware.

Too many problems

Way too many things to write down to complain about. Just one warning, make sure you have easy access to the power cord as you will be resetting the box quite often, as that is the standard fix from Shaw. Every time I watch a recorded program, I have to power the box off and on to get back to the pvr menu. That is, if it actually recorded my program. It does like to record several copies of really old season programs on its own volition, if you like to watch the same older program over and over. This unit will really challenge you.

Do Not Recommend

I bought this units even though i read all the bad reviews and I have to say after using it for 6 months I'm very disappointed. This machine constantly freezes when scrolling through the guide. When the unit freezes and you power it down it takes around 5 minutes for the unit to power itself up. You hit the arrows on the remote in the guide and you see a light flash on the unit but nothing happens, the unit receives a command but nothing happens. When you order a channel unfortunately it takes this thing for ever to update the channel or even allow you to watch it while the other digital boxes I can view the new channels instantaneously. I'm usually a calm person but this unit has had me cursing out loud on too many occasions. The only thing i like about this unit is that it reorganizes the channels, like all the HD channels are where the standard ones are and the fact that it only shows the channels you have is nice. If you read this please really consider another unit, its not worth the time and frustration that this unit will cause you. I was really stupid for buying this unit even after reading the bad reviews. I thought people were being to harsh with their reviews but I was wrong this thing is very buggy.

Works Just Fine

I'm not sure what some people are talking about in regards to buggy software. I purchased this a week ago because I needed a new HDPVR, and was worried at first since everyone was mentioning how buggy it was. I haven't had any issues. In fact, I like the smaller size compared my old one. 2 other things is that now only the channels you are subscribed to will show in the menu, so no more having to set those up. As well, it now will default to the HD channel (should that channel be available in HD), another huge bonus, as in the past I had go thru the list myself manually to only have the HD channels in the menu guide. Like I said, only had it for a week, so haven't ran across any issues thus far.

Don't Buy! Buggy Software

The bottom line is that Shaw released a product that was not ready. I imagine they were quite aware of what they were dumping on their customers. I have issues with recordings occasionally failing/kicking out, sporadic offline messages, etc. They have done a number of updates but have not solved the core stability problems. I suspect the software is a mess under the hood and the company/team/responsible group is struggling to rescue a failed project. Shaw should be ashamed. They have gotten used to abusing their customers and then relying heavily on their poor support people to clean up the mess. The menu eye candy is not worth the change. If you have an old box that works, keep it.

Great PVR!

Really enjoying the features of this. There are still some tweaks that still need to be made, but nothing is glitching too much. My experience with Shaw tech support has always been great. I like how on this PVR it only shows the channels you're subscribed to - no more annoying "subscription required" message. Great picture and sound quality when watching HD content.

Works when it wants to

This PVR can be really frustrating, realizing that they are still working the bugs out of it doesn't seem to be any consilation especially when spending a few hundred dollars on it. Constant freezing, slow menus, recording getting deleted because the device decides to reset itself. Shaw should really be compensating us for putting out a buggy hardware.

leaps above the old pace pvr

Replaced a pace pvr with the lack of memory issue(freezing and constant resets). This motorola box is so much faster and has way more feature's. I like the HD guide, and the fact it only shows subcribed channels, no more hitting channels with the "call your service provider" message. I have had this box for about a month now. no issues.

Waste of hard earned money

Had this box for over a month, have yet to record properly with their buggy new guide., it is slow and after "updates" and "fixes" still does not work. They don't seem to acknowledge problems with the box, when you contact customer service , their answer for problems is unplugging and plugging in the box to reset. Do not waste your money. Many people having problems check shaw's own forum on the 3510 for more info on the many problems

The software is very buggy, the menu button on the remote will not work, due to a software issue, making it difficult to watch recordings, and when you can get it to play, they frequently crash. I do not recomend this box at all.

Do not buy this unit. It is a useless piece of garbage. The pause feature restarts on its own after a couple of minutes, and if you try to watch a program you are recording from the beginning while the program is still running - sports, for example - the stupid thing takes you to the live broadcast and not the recording. As you can imagine, this is a great way to ruin a hockey game. If Shaw doesn't come to pick this thing up immediately I'm going to go down to their offices and throw it through the window. I hate this thing.

Wait to buy this

Great potential but absolutely horrible right now. Inconsistent, freezes, lost functionality from earlier models. It uses a shaw in- house designed guide that is causing a lot of this. Totally a beta version that should have been tested before rolled out!!!

Does what it is intended to do.

When the DIRECTIONS are followed, easy as pie, this new unit is quieter than the others. Had a slight update problem but was reslved over the phone with Shaw's Technitions. Great service!

Guide Super Slow

Nice interface, but the HD guide doesn't work very well. Takes forever to load pages and has to be rebooted daily. Think Shaw released this a bit too soon...

Nice upgrade

Picked up this unit to replace my 160gb Motorola PVR. The Pros: 1080p output, (mainly upscaling but some of the new MPEG4 channels are broadcast in full 1080p) Smaller footprint, I would say it's close to 50% smaller then the older motorola boxes. The Cons: Utilizes the new Shaw HD guide which takes a bit getting used to, probably the worst part is that Shaw is continuing to develop the guide as it only went live in the middle of November. They are continuing to tweak it so there are still some bugs. Overall: A nice upgrade especially for those who want ultimate picture quality.

Basic choice

When I followed the "on line" instructions with a Shaw rep. the hook up was fast and easy. This tuner works better than the previous unit. Better sound and picture. It works quieter. Be ready for the new format, like anything else it'll take getting used to.
