This thing is great.

I am so happy to have this. I upgraded from the Motorla 3400M and I have to say its a huge upgrade. The guide for tv is bigger and way more options then my previous pvr, the biggest pro is I can now record 6 shows at a time or record 5 and watch a show, my old pvr only recorded 2, so that means i couldnt not watch tv at all or I had to watch what I was recording at that moment, which annoyed me. It does look different and will take a little bit to get used to, but as people we all adapt. I like the new remote because I have 4 of the previous pvr's remotes so its nice to have a change, since that remote was around for about 10 years. The fan does stay running even when the unit is off, but its quiet enough taht it shouldnt annoy anyone also the blue light stays on even when its off. By the clock a red light will flash on the box saying that your turning the tv and box off.(my remote turns off both) If you plan to use this with additonal tv's in your house, then you will need a portal box for each tv (up to 5 portal box's). If you are only using it in your living room without additional tv's no portal box is needed.

Easy to Use and Working Well

It only took a couple of days to get used to the new remote control and menus. It is a great improvement in relation to the previous PVR box that we had. So far it is working well and it is quiet.

Better than the Pace box, but . . . . .

On the plus side of things, this PVR beats the heck out of my original Pace PVR in these ways: 1) this is the biggest surprise - hardly any picture breakup which immediately indicated the problems we had were all due to the Pace being poor quality. 2) expanded recording capability - a really great improvement 3) Fast Forward / Rewind - is MUCH faster and more accurate than the Pace. 4) the ability to shut off the PVR while it is recording, a nice feature, and if I want to power off all my electronics at one time, the Gateway reacquires programming info MUCH faster than the Pace. On the Downside of things: 1) as others have said, the Guide is very poorly designed. I really miss being able to move the Selector (cursor) around the screen within the time frame displayed and make a selection without having to change the time frame. The Pace guided was much more user friendly and simply easier to use. 2) Recordings queued up - unless I have missed it somewhere, I would much prefer to have a separate screen which shows the programs I have queued for recording. The old Pace PVR did this nicely, the Gateway lumps the queued and the already recordings together making it rather confusing . . . another poor design. 3) as others have mentioned, the remote & functions are a little tricky to get used to but it didn't take too long to figure out what it can and can't do. On the whole, the Gateway PVR is a much better machine than the Pace.

Great except for Menu

Its a great PVR except for the, almost indecipherable, Menu and recording procedure. If you've never had a hard drive PVR then you will have no complaints but my previous one the DCX3400 was simple. Also a slow to populate Guide if you scroll fast Its Pros are any eSata attached HD works perfectly, records 6 Channels or 5 Channels and you can watch any other, color appears much better than my DCX3400. My recommendation its a good purchase.

Terrific but takes some getting used to

Got the new Gateway and two portals a week ago. The on-screen guides are quite a bit different than previous Shaw boxes we've had but we're getting used to them. The main challenge appears to be the remote. It works great and the response times are very quick in our experience but - wow - lots and lots of buttons and many of them small and unreadable in low light......this too shall take some time to get used to but this too shall pass. One really cool feature is the Gateway app. I forgot to set a show to record before we left on Christmas vacation. No problem. Loaded the app and was able to set it remotely. We also REALLY like the ability to set a recording and view it on any TV in the house.

A step backwards.

I just setup or should I say I had Shaw initialize this PVR. I intended to use it as a single TV PVR but apparently it's actually part of the gateway system which "can" be used as a single PVR a nice feature but in my case unnecessary. It took forever to get it initialized and loaded. It's nothing like the old systems that took a matter of minutes to do. It now takes someone at Shaw 20 minutes to enter a series of codes to actually get the thing to work. Well, we finally got it going and then the fun began. Allow me to state that the remote and menu are a giant step backwards in time. I don't know if Shaw got a deal on the remotes but they're terrible. The remote is more like something out of the 90's in it's simplicity and lack of features while the menu is confusing, hard to read and completely illogical. I haven't used the machine enough to make a judgement on it's quality but if it's anything like the remote and menu I've prepared myself to be disappointed. But on the plus side this model was on sale at Best Buy and I got it at a great price so if it lasts I'll put up with the eccentricities and be happy.

It is OK

This is our first PVR, so it is replacing the old Shaw Digital box. We've had it about 2 weeks and so far we don't love it. The size of the Guide is way to small to read comfortably from a distance - the old shaw digital box Guide was a great size and easy to read. We also find the remote slow and it is harder to navigate the channels. I don't like the brightness of the clock on the front. I tried turning it down to the lowest setting but it still emits way too much light for being in our bedroom. I have all the lights turned off however my husband doesn't like not being able to tell if the box is on or not. Over the years we have always had a VCR and DVD player in the room and those lights have never been a problem, however the light on this box could guide a small plane in for landing. I also don't like the noise that this box makes all the time. I can hear a fan or something running and it is not only noisy and annoying but I am concerned about how long this thing will last given that it is always running even when in the"off" mode.

new doesn't mean better

Nice that you can record 6 shows at a time....don't buy this if you need to use the guide...don't know what the geeks were thinking when they made it...not user friendly

Pleasantly Surprised!

The menu is way different and so is the remote. I am adapting to the new menu, however I think the remote is a little confusing. Recording using the shaw gateway app is excellent! Sale price made it worth while.

Awesome PVR !!!

The new Gateway system that includes the first portal in a single unit is Perfect! I may add additional portals in the future but for now happy to have a single unit with 6 tuners (record up to 6 channels at the same time) and 500 gig storage. The menu system isn't even a issue if you utilize the Shaw Gateway app on your smartphone. The free Gateway Android App on my Samsung Galaxy S6 is the ultimate! So fast, slick, easy navigation through the schedule that I often use it instead of the remote. The app also allows you to program your PVR recordings from anywhere while you are away from home. If I could give it 6 stars I would!
