More Information

Take first-rate pictures
  • The 20.1MP Exmor R APS-C HD CMOS sensor brings out the beauty in even the simplest things. It delivers incredible detail and low noise, so you can capture the fine texture of a butterfly's wings as it rests gracefully on a nearby shrub.
  • The APS-C sensor size, the same sensor format found in Sony's full-sized Alpha DSLR camera lines, combines high resolution, high sensitivity, and dramatic blurred backgrounds. Now you have a reason to stop and smell the roses with a camera that gives you the flexibility to endow even the simplest shots with your personal artistic touch.
  • Bionz X processor works seamlessly with the sensor to produce crisp still images with area-specific noise reduction, true colour rendering, and low noise. Infuse your butterfly photo with a sense of vibrant realism, and capture what your eye perceives, highlighting the subtle beauty of the delicate, brightly patterned scales.
  • Don't let the fading light deter you from appreciating what nature has to offer. High-sensitivity ISO 100-16000 captures beautifully in low light, limiting the noise so every exquisite and vibrant detail pops out. And when you need it, the built-in pop-up flash gives you an extra burst of light for great photos in dim situations.
  • The included 16-50mm E-mount retractable Power Zoom lens is small and compact, barely protruding from the front of your camera so you can still slide your a5000 in your jacket pocket with the lens attached. It features ED and aspherical elements for reliably sharp and detailed images well suited to everyday shooting.
  • Capture the sights and sounds of a lively soccer game on the park's wide, open field. Record Full HD videos in your choice of fast 60i for smooth action scenes, or slower 24p frames per second for a traditional, cinematic effect.
  • AVCHD codec lets you record beautiful Blu-ray picture quality, while the computer-friendly MP4 codec makes it easy to compress your files and upload to the web. This way you can fully appreciate your recording finesse displayed in Blu-ray quality on a monitor or big-screen TV, or post directly on Facebook for instant updates to your social network.
Bring it anywhere
  • Strike a pose with a view of the park in the background, thanks to a tiltable 3-inch 460K-dot LCD screen. It flips upwards up to 180 degrees so you can indulge in perfectly framed selfies or low-angle shots, and change your view on a whim.
  • Hold on to your latte with one hand, while fine-tuning your frame with the other. With its perforated, nicely textured grip, and easy zoom lever, this camera is great for one-handed use. Quickly snap a shot of a black-capped chickadee that came into view, perched on a low-hanging branch.
  • You'll have no trouble carrying this compact camera around. Lightweight at about 300 grams with battery and SD card, it'll sit comfortably in your purse or backpack.
Share your highlights
  • Wireless file transfers and one-touch pairing with a compatible mobile device are easy with WiFi and NFC connectivity. Sony's PlayMemories Mobile app lets you touch your camera to an Android smartphone or tablet, and create an instant connection through NFC for sharing, remote control, and basic editing.
  • Make the most of serendipity, and take several shots of nature's winged creatures before they take flight. Sony's lithium-ion rechargeable NP-FW50 battery lasts up to 420 shots on a single charge. The innovative InfoLITHIUM battery system lets you see the power percentage remaining so you can shoot with confidence.

Love(d) it.

I bought this camera in April this year and have been using it quite a bit. I love the photo quality that comes out of it and it's perfect for taking pictures of everyday life. However, yesterday I used it and went to turn it off and it just wouldn't shut down... something internal I'm guessing. I've only had it for four months so it's pretty disappointing that it's already having internal issues. I treat it well, it's always been in a case when not used. Not sure what happened but it just won't shut off unless I take the battery out.

Amazing. Excellent. Like. No. Other.

I bought this camera last July 7, 2016. So far, very good. Compact. All black. Lightweight. Moments made easy to share with wifi connectivity. 20.1MP gives sharp, crisp pictures. High definition videos. Excellent for catching every moment. Amazing every shot. Truly, BE MOVED.

Great value for the price

If you wish to make professional-like photographs, like portability and convenience and wish to further develop your photography skills this is the right camera for you. I used iphone camera for the past 5 years as my primary camera and now I wish to move to more serious photography with portability and price as a very important factor as well as possibility to scale up down the road with the lens and a5000 fully met my requirements and expectations. It is light, very compact, has interchangeable lens and makes amazing photos even with a starter kit. It also gives you full control in manual mode. It has it's drawbacks (weak autofocus and low resolution display to name a few) however positives outweigh the negatives by far, at least in my opinion.

Very good camera, bad documentation

The camera is a very good product, except from very occasional freezing of the system when zooming digitally, it has worked extremely well and the picture quality is excellent. It is easy to operate and its autofocus is very effective However, when you have a camera with this level of sophistication, you want something that helps you use all its features correctly and efficiently. The built-in and attached documentation falls way short of this; it has been very frustrating to learn by trial and error -not an issue in terms of memory but you loose time and with it, windows of opportunity...

Worth the price

Excellent picture quality. Posted few pics online and had compliments from many who own expensive DSLRs. Im sure it lacks few functionalities and lenses are seems a bit expensive; but overall the camera is worth the price. I would 100% recommend this.

Excellent Camera

I upgraded from the Sony NEX-5N which I had for 4 years. This camera is great. Much lighter and more compact. I love the new WiFi and NFC features. The photo quality is amazing. Would definitely recommend.

Unbeatable in its price range

This is an amazing camera for someone who does not want to spend a fortune to achieve decent image quality while looking for portability and simplicity of a compact camera. It may be lacking some features of DSLR, but both photo and video quality are top notch.

Love this camera

I am new to cameras and was hesitating between the A5000 and similar models in its price range. Finally decided on the A5000 and I am not disappointed. Overall awesome camera. Simple to use and also has a lot of great features to explore. The quality of pictures is amazing and the WIFI works flawlessly. Would recommend.

Great

This is a great product for those who are looking to become more serious about photography, but keep in mind that things can get expensive for those who outgrow the lens that comes with this camera. What this camera and lens combination can do: take gorgeous snapshots for everyday and vacation use. You can take some nice landscape shots because the lens is wide enough, and can zoom in a bit for great looking portraits. Selfie mode can also be useful. What this camera and lens combination cannot do: Take pictures of wildlife far away, capture sporting events and hope to be able to zoom in on the players, or take pictures in low light situations such as in clubs or even some restaurants. For those coming from point-and-shoots, think of the lens as a 3X zoom lens. If you need more zoom, you will need to purchase Sony's 55-210mm or 18-200mm lenses for this camera, which cost as much or twice as much, respectively, as this particular combination. Another shortcoming that you may soon discover with the default lens is that it will at times struggle in low light situations (blurry or grainy pictures). Of course, Sony has a lens for that issue as well, the 35mm f1.8 lens, which also costs as much as this particular combination.

Great Little Camera

I bought this camera after I decided it was time to move up from my 8MP point and shoot camera and I'm pretty happy with it. The photos are nice (but I'm not educated enough on the functions) and the video mode is awesome if you ever wanted to make a blog or something. Also when I bought this camera I did not want to have those bulky cameras like all amateur photographers but someone that can look like a casual but have some great shots. Still working out the settings but I'm very happy with my purchase.

OK, but not great.

I needed a spare camera and bought this one because it was small and was advertised to be comparable to the SLRs I own. I bought and quickly returned this camera because it simply would not perform for my specific needs, which is mainly sports shots. It's OK, performs better than any point-and-shoot I've owned, but, after giving it a workout, it simply does not compare to an SLR, not even the comparably priced entry models. So, if you want a 'nice' camera that is small and takes beautiful still shots that are better than a standard point and shoot, then this would be a good choice; it's still priced accordingly. But, if you think for a second that you can get SLR quality shots in low lighting and of moving targets, good luck with that... I needed a spare camera and used this for one morning to take shots of a soccer tournament and was shocked at how poorly this focused on moving subjects. Basically, most shots were OK for focus on the main subject, but moving toes were grainy, ball was a total blur, etc... and I absolutely know how to use settings. Still shots I took with it looked great, but what a difference with moving - horrible performance for that! I also gave it a second chance for non-moving inside my office. Whereas my SLRs can focus with mega clarity on something as small as the bar code number on a box 20 feet away, this camera couldn't focus on anything even close to that detailed - good for portraits, but small details cannot be zoomed in on clearly. I'm writing this as someone who is not a pro photographer but is far more experienced than any who have not done a lot of photo taking over the years. I have 3 DSLRs, one other mirrorless and an handful of go pros, point and shoots, etc,,, and, through my profession, I take hundreds of photos every week. I know what a camera can do and how to use it, and this one, though still 'nice' does not stand up against SLRs

incredible camera!

This camera is amazing! I loved it but unfortunately had to return it because it's not suitable for videos. The little clips on the side make too much noise and make videos, vlogging etc difficult. they can't be taken off either. i would definitely recommend this camera for anything either doing sit down videos or photography in general. just something to think about before purchasing!

Great Camera

We bought this camera, on sale, before our trip to Hawaii. I've had no experience with an SLR or Mirrorless camera before, so I can't make any comparisons there. The picture that we took looked beautiful. The camera is small, and is easy to carry around. The battery life was great, it had no problems lasting the whole day, and even if it didn't, it'll charge with the same charger as a cellphone. I'd definitely recommend this camera to anyone considering it.

Nice little camera

I've had this camera for a week and a bit now and overall I like it. It lacks some features that I would have liked to have such as an audio and bulb jacks as well as continuous remote shutter. It has its limitations but given the compactness of the camera and the amazing 20.1 megapixel sensor, my complaints are few. My biggest complaint is that Best Buy dropped the price right after I purchased mine. That sits poorly with me.
