not as great as was described

the box works but for a specific website where tv shows are available, it doesn't display the episodes for each season. Can only watch movies. The website works from a computer though. Have problems downloading apps on it. Found that I save websites to favourites and that works. If I had the chance to do it over again, I wouldn't purchase.

The Best Internet Player

I owned both the Apple and Boxee units and gave them to the kids to play with after I bought the Sony unit. Works well, keyboard great and easy to handle. Terrific picture & sound. The best money I have spent in a long time for electronics.

Pretty good player

People who get this player need to sideload an app called Show Box, it is similar to Netflix but better and it's free. This app will have you considering cancelling your cable.

I agree with Terry Mitchell, in Toronto ON... Sony definitely dropped the ball on the ability to upgrade the included Chrome and Flash Player (i.e. you can't upgrade) ... So, you are stuck with V9 of Flash, where many sites currently require V11 for streaming... However, this device is a very good internet player (overall)... it has allowed me to semi-retire my Boxee, as it has been slowly, but surely, losing ground within the media streaming world. I have also noticed, that unlike the Boxee, I am not able to stream media from other devices located within the network. Has anyone been successful with installing either XBMC or Navi X to this device? It seems as though the Android version currently installed, can neither be upgraded or accept theses 3rd party applications. Overall not bad, but please upgrade the Chrome/Flash installation ASAP!.. Because this cannot be done, I can only give this a 3/5.

Great system

I liked this way better than my Roku Player, the menu system was more intuitive and much faster. I especially liked the HDMI pass through for your cable box. What I didn't like about the unit was that the remote feels weird even in my big man hands, but it is very functional. Also, I was hoping this remote could replace my programmable Harmony remote, but alas it cannot because it the system lacks the ability to properly control at least one device in the three TV setups I've deployed these in (and never the same device). For example, I can't turn off the sound system with it on one and I can't turn off the cable box on another without the pass through glitching out and causing me to restart both units. Still though, I give this product a four star rating because there's work arounds for all the glitches I've encountered and having a seamless way to switch between cable, Netflix, and the content on our Plex server makes it worth while.

Like if you S4 was terrible.

Where does one even start with this device. I'll make an effort to boil down what I believe are the key issues with it. - If you're a Canadian user, you'll quickly notice that everything worth installing on this device from Google Play is simply not available to you - I'm not sure if this is coming from the Google side, Sony side, or both, but this seems like a poorly maintained device in regards to firmware/software releases - though this may just again be due to me being a Canadian user - The device is not very flexible in regards to play/viewing video/image formats in comparison to its competitors - The Chrome browsing is very clunky - you initially think it all just has a learning curve that you'll get over, but you don't. It's just a poorly developed and maintained deployment - The remote is quite an interesting design, though lacks stability and control which I assume is something that will perhaps come with future versions - You're largely paying for a novel yet very immature remote and the Sony brand name I would highly advise against buying this product. It's far too expensive for what it is. That all being said, if you're a novice computer user who doesn't tend to tinker with your electronics, then this device can run Netflix, Plex and the Sony paid subscription services stably.

So long cable!

This great little box has cleared my shelves. Why pay over $100 for cable anymore. Can be a bit slow and Sony could come up with a few more programs/ apps for it but over all, Happy!

Missing an important feature

I wrote a terrible review when I first opened and tried to use this internet player. This time Sony dropped the ball on the ability to upgrade the included Chrome and Flash Player... i.e. you can't upgrade ... so you are stuck with V9 I think it is of Flash and many sites require V11 for streaming.. However, on every other score this is one superb media and internet player... it has allowed me to free up a computer that I had devoted to my entertainment system and I can now use that computer elsewhere... So good going Sony, but please upgrade the Chrome/Flash installation.. Because it can't be done I can only give this a 4/5

Have had this for a year now and must say I've enjoyed it immensely much better than the boxee box or apples version ..for some reason it's not one of the accepted devices for nhl gamecenter ...but very functional remote and useful app shortcuts ...I would most definitely recommend this gem for anybody and I find it useful for about 90 percent of what I want to do online... It even works well linking up with my smartphone displaying images etc.on my plasma screen off the cell... Well done sony

Great Product

I read a lot of reviews on this product with regard to streaming from a computer. Make no mistake this is for web browsing, flash videos and google play movies. Not streaming videos from your computer. Works well if you are ingrained in the google ecosystem, if not then not so much.

Will not play your own media files

I bought this device to be a network media player for the files I already have on my PC. Its support for media files is so limited however, that it is virtually useless in that capacity. A web search suggested I install an app called Plex, which would allow media streaming of nearly all formats, but since the actual device does not support the formats, the process relies on your PC to transcode on-the-fly which results in buffering every 30 or less seconds. In the end I gave up, shelved this thing, and bought a WD TV Live, which works perfectly.

Nice Internet device, useless media support

found the device to be an awesome internet device, but my main purchase was to play my stored media on my usb hard drives. It has very very limited file support and saw 3 avi files and missed my 300 iso files. There are too many file types that it dosen't support to list. Even the online Sony Support agreed with me when I said I would have to return my player back to BB. Which I did!

Device just grows on you

I purchased this device two weeks ago after walking into BB and asking for AppleTV. The sales rep convinced me to purchase this product due to my need for 1080p streaming video along with the fact that I am a fairly avid Android user. My only Apple product is my iPod and several hundred iTunes songs I have purchased however playing my music over my TV is a non requirement. For the first two days, I was ready to return it as I found the user experience a little hard to get used to but then I realized it was more about learning how to use the remote rather than the system. Setup was very easy however kept tripping myself up with the remote...but once I got that figured out...the advantages of this product over AppleTV became crystal clear. First of all, the fact that I can integrate my HDTV with this device is nearly perfect. as I don't need to constantly change inputs on my TV from my digital box to the Sony media player. It's all integrated together plus the picture on picture feature is truly outstanding. Secondly, this is a full Android platform in that I can download and install compatible apps to complete the experience. Most of the apps are top notch and Netflix and Youtube are simply awesome. I also have installed Accuweather and CNBC along with several cooking apps which have streaming video recipes and the experience is at a completely different experience from the out of the box defaults. I can now say I LOVE this device and would recommend it to anyone who wants a seamless TV and internet experience. Once you get past the learning curve with the remote (and Android too if you are not familiar with it), it is a fantastic investment and I look forward to years of enjoyment with it as the software continues to mature.

Limited Functionality in Canada

One of the key differentiating features of the Sony Internet Player is that you can use the strength of Google Search in conjunction with your cable/satellite service. Unfortunately this feature is currently only available with the US firmware and only works in conjunction with US cable/satellite providers. As a result of this and the fact that there the Canadian version is also missing the ‘Primetime’ app which allows you to purchase TV shows/movies. The Canadian version is really not worth the price tag. You can get pretty much the same functionality out other less expensive options. Hopefully Sony updates the Canadian firmware and includes the TV integration components and adds a Canadian version of the Primetime app. If they do address these issues then I would give the device a 4 or 5 star rating. As it is there are much more affordable options that provide the same functionality of this device.

LOVE this!

I'm a very low tech person and it is so simple to install and so easy to use. I'm so glad we bought this instead of getting the Smart TV we were planning to get. I LOVE this product!

Works great for me.

I have been nothing but impressed with this little gizmo. The first couple hours were weird, but when I realized it needed 1 update, it's been smooth sailing ever since. We're semi-rural with a cable internet connection that is rated at 12mbps, but that's a top speed we rarely meet. However, Netflix streams flawlessly in full HD, even with our 2 teens pulling their share of the bandwidth too. The remote took a little getting used to, but it's all good once you figure it out. Everything else works as described. I even bought one for my daughter in University and she's loving it. If there was something to complain about, I'm sure I would have heard all about it. Believe me. We're not fussy people, so I don't know what some of the other reviews are talking about with their complaints. It works when I want it to work, and that's all that matters to me. And I know by supporting Google I am supporting technological innovation, not stifling it.

Sony NSZ GS 7

I purchased this unit a few weeks ago and found it to be very poor and unstable. Connection with my router keeps dropping although signal strenght is excellent, google chrome browsing gets stuck and system is not smooth neither does google account connect to its servers. This unit will take a one way trip back to the store for a refund. The remote is unique and very well designed.

No wonder Sony is losing money...

Received this box as a promotion from Sony... previously considering purchasing it and was wondering about whether it plays video files with DTS audio, so hope this helps out folks with the same question. It does NOT. I was hoping that even if it couldn't decode the audio it would at least pass it through to my receiver which would decode... but turns out it refuses to play the file at all. It is amazing that something as expensive as this can't play files that my previous 2 year old $50 media player could. As to the other functions, the system seems laggy and the browser freezes up. Definitely not impressed, and would not recommend.

Nice remote

Very nice remote, love having IR for controlling the tv. Other than that the box is useless. Lite years behind other medi devices. Paying for basic apps to browse your local content bad idea, have to run media server apps on pc's bad idea. Like I said so many other easier better products out there.

I'd go for the Boxee Box

The Sony Internet Player is good product I had it for about 2 days and really enjoyed it but then when I attached my external HD I noticed that some of my files weren't working. I thought that some of the files might have been corrupt but upon investigation it turns out the files were fine. I did some trouble shooting but nothing worked. Unfortunately I returned the product as it did not meet my needs. I exchanged it for the Boxee Box which so far is amazing. It plays all my files off my HD as my WDTV did before and it also syncs with my MacBook which the Sony Internet Player did not do. The Boxee Box also came with a HDMI cable.

Good system but poor file format support

The system as a whole is outstanding with the one exception of what I wanted most -- HD file format support, specifically .mkv files. Some played, some didn't, but they ALL worked with my roommate's Boxee. Returning this and getting a Boxee...

I love Android but...

I purchased this instead of the Apple TV for many reasons. To start I wanted to be able to view YouTube content without restrictions also to be able to go on Flash websites and it works perfectly that way but there is more. I also wanted to stream my content or even have a mirrored image from my Macbook and since Android is "Open Source" I would except them to have an app or be able to connect through Bluetooth to do so. I found out there is no way to, not even through Apps. I even went online to ask "Sony Support" and all they could answer was "This feature is not available yet" and I'm guessing it won't be for a long time. I am pretty sure most people buying these products wants it to do this so why even release a product that can't? It is not a very stable product, it has froze on me multiple times also sometimes when I try to turn it on, it just comes on as a black screen where I have to physically unplug it then plug it in to have it start working again. The product still needs a lot more for me to actually keep it so I decided to return mine and hope that they will update it with better features.
