17" laptop chilling mat

Still have same product for last 6 years. Still working well and runs quietly. From constantly picking up, both sides have cracked so bought new model. This has an upgrade in that the usb cord has a snap in storage compartment on both sides of the unit so the cord doesn't hang and can be easily stored. Highly recommend and is good value for the price.

Going strong for 4 years...

I purchased this product back in 2012 from Future Shop when I bought my first laptop. The good news is that I'm still using both. I plan on purchasing a new laptop very soon and I have no intentions on buying a new chill mat because as far as I'm concerned, this one is perfect. It's a little noisy at times, but it's very easy to use and keeps my laptop cool. I feel I can give credit to this chill mat for the longevity of my current laptop. I've certainly gotten way more out of it than I expected for it's value and I hope I continue to.

So far so good

Pros: dual fans located in the correct area, quiet, moves a fair amount of air, USB plug can be swapped to the right or left side, neoprene exterior aids in anti-slip Cons: lifespan (seems they don't last long, so I bought two), bit bulky for my 13" laptop, no usb hub, no power switch

Great product for the price

I purchased this for half off during boxing day and it works great! Can't agree with people regarding it dying off quickly, but for [price] it worked really good, even if I had to buy it 4 times it would still be cheaper than other alternatives. My laptop has two cell batteries so i do feel as if it makes the battery run out a little quicker, but it really is worth it!

Poor quality unit

It cools as it should, no problem there, but after five months of ownership the fan has started to, intermittently, make a lot of noise. I took the unit back to Best Buy, but they told me I had to send it back to the manufacturer for repairs. When I only paid (the price) for the unit paying to have it shipped back to the manufacturer/repair center doesn't make economic sense to me. I think Best Buy should have taken the unit back and replaced it with a new one. Poor customer service on Best Buy's part. I'll shop elsewhere in the future.

Great Price, Great Functionality.

I purchased this very cooling pad around 10 months ago from a near-by Future Shop location. I purchased it due to me having a laptop that is Turbo-Boost capable, which performs better under cooler temperatures. Being a university student who also loves playing time-consuming games, I spend dozens of hours a week on my laptop. I run this cooling pad continuously while I use my laptop. This cooling pad is quiet, reliable, and cost-effective. While it may not perform as well as higher-end cooling pads, it 1) has given me no problems, 2) has boosted the performance of my laptop to a visible degree, and 3) is ergonomically designed, in that it slants the keyboard towards the user for easier typing. For a cooling pad of this price, this Targus cooling pad deserves a 5 star rating (In my opinion).

Love it!

I recently purchased a Dell XPS15 and it runs HOT. This case does a great job of keeping my laptop cool, and it is very comfortable on my lap. For what it is, it actually has versatility - the USB can exit either left or right to coincide with the side your USB drives are on. After reading other reviews and seeing it dies at about a year, I'd still say it's great value. I spent thousands on my laptop and use it often so I want to ensure I keep it as protected as possible.

Good product, value for money

Have had this for three months, and it works great. Helps maintain the temperature of processor to a manageable 72 Celsius, while it used to go up to 102 when playing games. About the cord getting broken, I believe it was a problem with older design where the cord came out at an awkward angle. Light weight, ergonomically good to use on table or lap.

Lightweight and Quiet

It's a pretty good laptop cooler for the price. My laptop no longer runs hot. Its lightweight and comfortable on my lap. It also runs very quiet. This is the second one that I've purchased. The first one stopped working after about a year and a half - I had to keep adjusting the position of the USB cord to get it to work. Hopefully I have better luck with this one. I've purchased more expensive ones in the past and had them die on me in about a year.

Don't even think about buying this.

It barely works. The fan is extremely weak. You are better off blowing on your computer to keep it cool. I am super disappointed. It says it supports up to 17" but it barely fits my 15.6" on here. If you have a side vent, don't even think about this. Move on, trust me.

Works but dies after 6 months.

This cool mat works really well, however, the cord will damage over time. There will be no visible damage, but because the cord has to bend to be plugged in to the USB slot, the connection between the USB and the cord will wear out over time (this happened with both of mine, and the ones my friends had). I personally fixed this issue by stripping the wire and reconnecting the head, but if you don't want to go through the trouble of doing that, and you want the mat to last over a year, I suggest looking at something else.

Awesome chill mat!

I just bought this chill mat and it's great. I works fine with both my MacBook Air 13" and work laptop that is 16". The chill mat is comfortable on my lap and keeps whichever laptop on it cool.

Breaks after a year

So I've had two of these chill mats so far and the first one was replaced by warranty. The USB cord that comes out of the back and plugs into my laptop broke. It would start pulling apart from the chill mat. Targus had me pay almost $[...] in s&h to have it replaced by warranty. I was so annoyed and would never do that again since they go on sale for less than that at times. So a year later with my new chill mat and the exact same thing is happening. The fans are also really loud this time too, I've even cleaned them and no improvement. So overall it worked well in the beginning and if you don't pay too much for it then you're good. You'll have to replace in a year or so for sure.

Works like a charm!

Laptop doesn't feel hot after being on for the entire day and my vagina no longer tingles from having bare laptop in my laptop. Great! Only downside is the sound that comes from the fan..

Had one for years

I bought one of these when I got my Toshiba back in 2010 and it worked wonderfully. It kept my lap cool, as I use my laptop either on my lap or bed, and it kept dust out of my laptop vent. The only con is with the design. All of my laptop vents have been on the left side while the fan used to blow cool air on my laptop was on the right. It did a bit to help with cooling but not as much as I would like. I would definitely buy another one, as after 3.5 years it still is a great accessory. The fan hasn't worked in about a year but again, it never really did much of a difference anyway.

it's great as a laptop tray

first of all, i have to let people know that if your laptop has an overheating issue, most likely this thing won't fix it. You will probably have to clean-up your laptop's fan from all the dust it has collected over the years. this product is great as a laptop tray as it grips your laptop with its removable rubber grips. The design is pretty, and it sits pretty comfortably on my lap as it has this suede-like material at the bottom i personally think the fan itself won't do much to cool down the laptop so i barely use it. but the noise the fan creates is not very loud at all. I think most importantly this thing works best to keep dust out of your laptop as much as possible. Instead of putting your laptop on the sofa, carpet or bed (which has a lot of dust, and the laptop sucks it all in), you have this tray that should have way less dust in it.

Just average

My laptop was overheating to the point where I could barely touch the underneath, and sometimes it would shut off while streaming videos. The chill mat came highly recommended by a family member. I'm disappointed. The laptop still gets very hot, not as bad as before, but worse than I would have thought. I'm not sure the chill mat is doing its job protecting my computer from possible damage.

My computer suffers from sever overheating to the point that it turns off from streaming videos. I've been using this chill mat for a week and I haven't seen any significant difference-my computer continues to overheat and turn off on its own. Not worth the price in my opinion.

So a week after receiving it, one of he fans started to make a reaalllyy loud noise. So now, my macbook doesn't scream anymore and that's great but the sound of that broken fan is absolutely unbearable.

Solved my overheating problem

Being the owner of a laptop that has severe overheating problems (by virtue of a bad design - thanks for that HP), my HP Pavilion DV6 no longer hits 95 degrees while burning the skin off my legs. Before owning this, the laptop would blister the plastic finish on my desk reaching 95+ degree CPU temperatures. Before the chillmat, this laptop was doomed to burn itself alive. Picked up this chillmat on a recommendation I read while researching this overheating problem. With this chillmat installed underneath the laptop, the maximum CPU temperature I've managed to reach while running the machine hard is 75.3 degrees. Almost an amazing 20 degree temperature difference. I can't say enough great things about this. The fans are super quiet, and it's saved the life of my computer. Highly recommended. Think I'll buy another for my wife's MACbook Pro which also gets blistering hot.

I bought this one because this is the only one that you can actually use and put on your lap. Other chill mat have exposed fans in the bottom thus making it complicated if you put it on your lap or when you use it while laying on your bed. The only issue I have with this is the very noisy fan, i have bought 2 of this and both fans are noisy.

A nice mat with little cooling power.

It's comfortable, nice for propping up the laptop, the fans run very quietly, and it definitely keeps the heat off your legs. However, it doesn't make any difference on the temperatures for my laptop, an Acer Iconia 6886. My i5-480M CPU was running around 56c per core under load, and would hover around 40c per core at idle. These temperatures were regardless of whether or not the Chill Mat was plugged in and the placement of the laptop on the Chill Mat.

This cooling pad worked okay at first but then it started to slow down and eventually stopped blowing air even though it's still on and making this annoying clunking sound. This was all in a few months of use. I'm a computer expert and if you want a quality product don't buy this brand. Throw in a few extra bucks for a good quality pad.

Targus chill mat

I've had this for over a year now and it's still going! A bit bulky to travel with (hence the oversized laptop bag), but it's quiet and keeps my laptop cool. I can sit in bed and watch movies or surf the web, or keep it plugged into my HDTV 24/7 and never have to worry about overheating. Going to buy extras for the wife and kids!

Short lived but handles any temp you throw at it

Like most people reviewing this mat I too was extremely happy with it for about the first three months, it fits very comfortably in your lap and the stock fans are strong enough to cool down even a heavy duty 17' laptop. That being said after about three months the fans no longer work so the realistic value of this mat is pretty low.

  • from Toronto
  • Feb 13, 2012

Before buying my GTX 560m GPU would get to 96 degrees while playing certain games. So I bought to see if it could help keep the temp down, but the only thing it did was prolong the time it took my GPU to get to 96 degrees. I would recommend buying this I guess if the things you do don't require a lot of power, but for games or design programs that work your system to the max I would suggest buying better cooling pad.

great design but Targus needs to use better fans

I had this mat for 6 months now and its been great. the design is smart (air gets pulled in from the SIDES not the bottom) however the fans on mine died after a month of use. (the bearings failed). I didn't feel like buying another mat so I "altered" it by fitting a 120mm case fan (a Scythe S flex G) to replace the 2 small stock fans. it still cools the same but the case fan has better bearings so it will last longer. I would say the design is great but seriously I only got 1 month of use with the stock fans. I know a few people who have the same mat and their fans lasted around 4 months. i am not saying this mat is bad but some high quality fans will make this an excellent mat.

You can't get any better than this. We have 3 laptops in my house and we've gone through a lot of burnt out or cheap coolers that don't work, but this one is by far the best and very comfortable and stable to sit on your knee.

Good, but.....

I have had this product for 8 months now and it worked great. I had a laptop that kept over-heating and this prevented that. Then i got a new one and it has always stayed cool. But now the fans are getting weak and VERY NOISEY. I contacted Targus and I can get it replaced but I (or you) have to pay to ship it there. It Cost almost as much to ship it than it does to buy it. It would be better to buy a new one. I would choose this one again though, It has proved itself. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a laptop fan/chill mat.

Cool and quiet

I have a laptop which I like to hook up to the TV and play games. As you can imagine, it gets pretty hot. (CPU up to 80 degrees celsius). After using this cooling pad, the CPU only got up to 70 degrees and the idle temperature is a lot lower as well. When I first plugged it in, it was so quiet I had to put my hand over it to make sure the fans were blowing. Great product, if you are going to get a cooling pad make no mistake and get this one.

Works great! We use it for a 13" Macbook Pro. Keeps the Mac nice and cool. Both fans are super quiet, you can barely tell its on. It doesn't drain the battery either.
