Happy with the purchase

GPS works fine. But mounting hardware is not so good, GPS keeps falling. I bought a separate mounting hardware for 10 bucks, now everything is ok.

A very good GPS with the essential features

I bought two of these units for my wife and I. Updating them out of the box was pretty straight forward but a long process the first time as it will create a full backup of the unit for recovery purposes. Later backups are very quick as only changed files are copied. The IQ routes are great, making corrections to the map is very easy through the menu. The traffic system is an amazing feature but know that it does not work in all areas. Large cities like Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto are covered but outside of those areas you will likely not have coverage. I've used the unit on a few trips now and I am very pleased. Times are accurate and the unit recalculates in a flash. All in all this is a very good unit at a great price.

It's okay

The GPS unit itself is pretty good, however the attachment to put it on your window or dashboard isn't so good. I don't use mine that often, so not that big a deal, plus I bought mine on sale and used my Best Buy coupon!

Mounting hardware falls off too often and the screen cracks too easily. Company does not warranty this type of damage when it is in fact caused by there poor mounting hardware, other people have reported the same problems. Slow in updating route changes. [...]

Don't bother

There are better GPS units out there. I will make it short and sweet. PROS: Design is nice and the material is quite nice to the touch., the box compact and isn't filled with nonsense and ads. CONS: The GPS map is slow and unresponsive when trying to move the map to see the neighbourhood as big picture. The GPS units froze a few times and had to restart it. Just not happy about how glitchy it is. I have a means of comparison, I used to own a Garmin and I gave it as a gift to a family members. Not advertising Garmin or anything, I bought TomTom for the price but the unit is too slow and the map is primitive (after comparing to other units).

Great unit at fair price

We just purchased our second unit. I would not drive to Toronto without having the traffic feature. It's saved me so many times. You don't need to listen to the radio for traffic news when you have this unit. I have mine set so it automatically avoids traffic problems by changing my route. You can set it so you can choose if you want to make the changes in the route or not. In Waterloo where there is no live 'traffic' available, you are directed to the fastest routes based on history from other TomTom users. I had two Garmins in the past and I would not go back.

90 days same as lifetime

Bought this TomTom because it had lifetime updates, little did I know that lifetime is 90 days. If you go over 90 days from your last update, no more updates. Otherwise works great.

Can't wait to return!

Had 2 previous Garmin products but bought this as on sale. Decided to give TomTom a chance during a trip in Florida. I can tell you as I sit in the condo in Florida that I cant't wait to return this unit. Thank god I have enough sense not to blindly follow this thing or I would be racking up incredible toll fees for my rental car that would end up on my credit card. In addition, the voice is awful and has difficulty saying the word "metres". I can hardly stand listening to it. For our trip to Disney it directed us right to a backlot maintenance area. At least I knew it was wrong and got directions from security. My wife uses a Garmin at work and loves it. Don't tell her but I should have listened to her and bought the other brand. From wrong turns to an awful voice I barely give it a "2" overall.

start 55tm

Needed a GPS for a trip to the northeastern US. Bought this to help guide my route, did not want to spend too much money. This is an excellent unit, able to find many different points of interest, had no problems. The interface could be a little more user friendly, newbies to this will get frustrated trying to input locations. Also have to use a lot of pressure to input info. Wished you could enter multiple addresses for a trip, not just a to b. Still happy with it though, does mostly what I need for the pricenplusbi can take it out of my car anytime!

Great unit

I recently tried another manufacturers traffic GPS that was so bad I took it back and bought the Tom Tom 55TM. I have an older TomTom in another car so I'm pretty used to interface etc. This one had the traffic app in it which is great. Picks up traffic reports quickly and suggests alternates. A little slow on the pickup when you travel by plane to another city and you don't want the rental car GPS. Great commuter GPS.

I love the ease of use of this GPS. Somehow I could not find the option of finding an address using PIN or ZIP code number. I am not sure if it is there or not. If not I would suggest TOMTOM to get it back in GPS OS.

TomTom Start 55TM

I replaced a Garmin because of the cost to update maps and the TomTom operation is just different enough from the Garmin to cause frustrations - probably just my learning curve. Great value. Lifetime traffic and map updates are great. I plan to update with TomTom Home monthly to minimize updating issues I have read about in other reviews.

Great Product vs Garmin

I had an old 3 inch Tom Tom which was several years old and did not have upgraded maps and traffic. So it was time to switch. A friend recommended Garmin and without testing it out, I got a 5 in lifetime map and traffic. Biggest mistake. The Garmin had very bad software. Very limited menu and options. Tom Tom has much more menu choices and one great feature that Garmin does not have. If you do not like the route choice provided by the GPS, there is an "Find Alternative" choice. Clicking it Tom Tom finds you the next available version. You can keep doing this until you find a route you like. Also Garmin has problems. In Waterloo requesting fastest route back to Toronto. Instead of taking 85 which was right next to the University, it asked you to go through downtown Kitchener. The GPS always showed this route as first choice on setting of fastest route with tolls option. So curiosity got the best of me as to why. It took 40 minutes more. Was so frustrated with the Garmin. Finally decided to go back to the Tom Tom. Tom Tom has been in the GPS core business for years. Garmin started out making fish finders. Maybe they should stick to what they know. They make a great product line of fish finders.

Tom Tom Start 55TM

This GPS is great and easy to use. Having live traffic and life time maps makes this GPS even better. Highly recommended.

Start 55TM pretty good, but..........

Overall very happy with the unit. I like the fact you can customize it and easy to use. I tried it only a few times and it worked well. The only thing that irks me about it, is the suction cup attachment. It is awkward to use and pops out of the unit at times when you are trying to adjust it. there would have been better off with a latch system and a firmer way to hold on to the unit.

Solid GPS for the Price

I just traveled to the US from Canada with this GPS and for the price with lifetime maps and Traffic you can not go wrong. Fast , the traffic feature is awsome. great unit pick one up and you will not be disapointed
