Decent hardware but poor execution

Let me start off by saying I work as a System Admin so I am very technically savvy however even i ran into so many issues with this camera that I would say go look at something else like a D-Link. Seriously.. it looks nice but its very lacking in features and widespread support. It really just seems like TP-Link bought a bunch of hardware and software and just tried to poorly cobble things together (and mainly failed). Pros: -The packaging was great. Came well shipped, well packaged and the camera's box was well designed to hold everything securely. -Aesthetically wise the cameras little egg timer shape is nice -They included a passive PoE adapter so you can use PoE to power the camera if its not in a great location. -Video quality is OK, its only 720p but thats to be expected for this model camera. Cons: -The tpCamera app does NOT work with Google Pixel phones and sadly it looks like a lot of the functionality requires this app. If you go look at the Google Play Store comments you'll see plenty of people having the same issue where you cannot login to the service on a Google Pixel Phone - which presented the first hurdle during setup, i ended up having to configure it via the web interface but for the average joe that's much harder. -The camera ONLY saves video to the MicroSD card slot, there is no ability or settings to save video to an external source like Cloud/SMB/FTP/etc - this means to access the files you're going to need to physically get to the MicroSD card to copy them off which kind of defeats the purpose. If someone could just pickup the camera or SD card and walk away with all of the video on it what good is it as a security camera? -Using the Cameras built in interface does not allow you to configure email notifications only FTP notifications, older model camera's from TP-Link appear to support this but this high end version does not. -Apparently (from what I've read because i have yet to find the option) you can setup email notifications via their cloud service but there is a limit to the amount of notifications it will send per month. That's a PITA but it MIGHT be okay if it worked - however logging into their Cloud service via desktop does not present any such option and is very bare bones. I have to assume that email notifications are configured via the app... which i can't use. -Trying to watch the camera's live stream locally via the web interface doesn't play well with Kaspersky Internet Security and only works if i disable KIS17 entirely, adding the web interfaces address to exclusions didn't resolve this either -> This might not entirely be TP-Links fault as it's likely more a Kaspersky issue but its worth mentioning. -I hear the WiFi signal reception is pretty bad with the camera -> however i am using Ethernet for reliability so this really is not an issue for me. Ultimately since i can't save video files to an external source or even get email notifications easily (Right now i'm using FTP notifications to a private FTP server, which then has a Cron job checking for new files and emails me when there are some but thats so hack and slash that you can't expect average people to bother going the distance and scripting their own fix) it's going to be returned for a refund. It's a shame because the hardware seems fine and has a lot of potential. If they flushed out the features of the web interface a little more and fixed their app i think this would be a great camera but with all of the problems i encountered i just can't recommend it. You'd be better off getting another brand which has a little more polished software.

love this camera

I bought two cameras: nc450 and nc250. I wired the 450, while the 250, was wireless. I never had issues like what the other guys were saying. It exceeded my expectations. I had the 250 wireless because I placed it at the back of my house facing the rear door. It was hard to run an ethernet cable. While the 450, I had it facing the front door and is connected to my home theater router. Since the 250 can act as an extender, my whole yard had a very strong wireless signal now. At first, I cannot access the sound and motion detection menu using my phone with the 250, although it was available with the 450, but today, I got an app update, it is now accessible. love these camera. They are cheaper than others and work flawlessly.

Great camera, easy to use and helpful to have, but suffers from a few minor annoyances

This camera was very easy to set up and works great. Can be swivelled a full 360 degrees left and right and sufficient view up and down with just a swipe on your phone. Live viewing on your phone is convenient from anywhere with an internet connection. Viewing recorded videos is easy too if you add a micro sd card. Motion detection seems pretty accurate and rarely triggers false positives. However, there are minor annoyances I've encountered. I have occasionally had trouble connecting to it, and I'm pretty sure its not an issue with my home internet connection (I was in the same room and did not have trouble with internet). When viewing recorded videos, the time stamp is off by an hour. The only solution I could find was to change my time zone.

Great Security Camera

Picked this up for it's 360 degree capability and was pleasantly surprised. Put this camera in a central location and you can monitor your whole home. The app is actually quite great, with recent updates allows you to have a lot of control over the camera. The motion/sound sensor can be a little tricky to calibrate as it's quite sensitive, but it's great to be notified by the app/email etc. and the app tells you when it detected motion when you review footage on the SD Card. Overall, a good product at a good price. Footage is clear, and the ability to store images locally is great.

Slick product

I bought this on sale just as I was shopping for an IP camera knowing that I'm going away for vacation and wanted to keep my house safe. Just my luck and came across a slick looking camera like this one. Thought I would give it a try since it was on sale. It worked out great and it was stylish looking. I was able to check in and out from oversea to see my house if anything had happened. After my vacation, I was showing my friends this camera and one of my friends actually saw some features on it. This is also a range extender build-in. No wonder my wi-fi got so much stronger in the 3rd floor after installing it. My wi-fi used to be on and off at some areas on the 3rd floor. I'm very pleased with this product.

Great product

Extremely happy with this unit. A snap to install and set-up. I use it remotely at the cottage 500km away and it has worked flawlessly - even when the power has gone out, it automatically syncs when the network comes back up. Provides great peace of mind being able to check the place on the mobile app.

Great in theory but not reliable at all...

I bought this camera so that I could keep an eye on my puppy while away from home. The features seemed great. The setup instructions were relatively simple but it took a while to actually get it to work. Once it was up and running it would disconnect unexpectedly, all of a sudden leaving me with no way of seeing/hearing what's going on at home. Now, just over a month after getting it, it only seems to work when I'm at home and on the same wi-fi. I recently tried the motion detection feature so that I could keep an eye on the new dog walker who, thanks to the camera actually working one day, I discovered was only taking my dog out for less than 10 min walks that should have been 30 mins long. Now it is once again not working properly so I can no longer tell if the dog walker is doing what she is supposed to. Not to mention the concern of having a stranger enter my home every day with no way of knowing what's happening whatsoever. I've tried working with the technical support team at TP-Link who basically just sent me a bunch of links to extensive instructions of various things I should try, which didn't really get me anywhere. I don't think i have any choice but to return this for something that will actually work. Any suggestions?

Great product

Bought the unit to monitor the cottage. Has worked great so far (4 months). Extremely easy to set up. I connect remotely (500kms away) to check the place daily and never had any issues. Definitely gives me peace of mind. Planing to buy a second one.

Nice camera

Bought one of these and one dlink . The picture followed the camera the best on tp link, where dlink was too slow to react. Returned the dlink back and bought a second tp link one.. Of course you have to have internet with good up load speed to view these units especially HD video for proper results

Good camera for the price

I needed a camera for indoor monitoring. The decision was between D-link and this one. I went with this as this is a better looking camera and I read reviews that the TP-Link app is much better. If one reads the instructions, it is a breeze to setup. It does require a good WiFi so if that is a problem, then you will have issues like one of the users here. I used the WPS button on the camera and the Rogers modem/router and it linked in less than a minute. The only issue I found was that you can only access the recording on micro SD card via the IP login to the camera. There is a link for FTP notifications, but i haven't tried that. Motion sensing works well. The file size is really optimized, and after 3 days of using this, I have only used 20MB of the 32GB card I put in. Tilt, Pan and Zoom all work well. Only sometimes you will find camera not responding on the app. Just exit out and restarting the app usually fixes that. looks like it is a bug in the android version of the app. I don't have any issues viewing on desktop using Chrome or IE.

Disappointed!

The security camera is very easy to set up and I should be really happy if it works! The camera works for an hour, then it abandoned the network by itself. The tech support from TP Link Camera wasn't helpful at all. The only recommendation given to me is to reset the camera by pressing the reset button. After reset the unit several times, the same problem occurred repeatedly. Definitely not a reliable security camera. I returned the item this morning and I will not recommend this camera to anyone.

Disappointed

I purchased it from the amazing boxing day sales from Best Buy Canada based upon the price and functions on the security unit sounds compatible to D-Link DCS 5030L . However, I'm totally disappointed with the connectivity. The set up is easy and it works for couple hours only! The connectivity is a joke! I set it up to surveillance my living room and the front porch before heading to my vacation home to ski. However, I am unable to view the footage from the smartphone app! An error message will pop up on your smart phone with "tpCamera Unable to login to Camera. Please check your network." I, current utilizing the D-Link DCS5020L and it doesn't have any problem with the connectivity! I'm returning it to Best Buy.
