I purchased 4 of these to use in a NAS unit. The installed and configured easily. I have only been using them for about a month but there have been no surprises or issues. These are not a fast drive but then I didn't pay as much as the 7200 rpm drives either. A good buy - I paid (the price) each.
Just installed this and works great on my ESX server. Thanks WD.
And Bill (Comment Above) - If you can't format past 2TB then you are running into an OS Issue (Typically Windows MBR Limit). It has NOTHING to do with the drive. If you do a little research, you can resolve your problem.
Have a great Mothers day tomorrow everyone.
I purchased four of these hard drives during boxing week. [...]
Inside the box are the Western Digital Green 3 TB drives and unlike the OEM versions, these carry a 3 year warranty. I can attest to the quality of these hard drives because I have been using them since the 1.5 TB versions came out, and in all 38 drives I now own, I have not had one failure or lost a single byte of data. This isn't being lucky, because I use to use another competitor for my hard drives drive and I was plagued with failures and data loss, so it took me some time to find a company which manufactures a reliable hard drive. The nightmares of spending frustrating hours on the phone with tech support just to get an RMA number are over. Stick with these hard drives and you will be safe and not sorry. As hard drives get bigger in capacity, you don't want to risk losing a whopping 3 or 4 TB of data. When I use these drives, I have them running 24 hours a day for a couple of years where they are constantly being written to, and after they are full, I move them to offline storage. These drives are the quietest hard drives on the market (not counting sold state drives which are a different kind of drive), and they use low power and stay very cool.
I gave these hard drives a 5/5 for performance because they perform perfectly. I should mention that there are faster hard drives that spin at 7200 rpm, instead of the 5400 rpm these spin at, but the difference is noticeable only in performance tests and not in everyday use. The faster spinning hard drives are hotter, use more power and when when things go faster there is a greater chance for errors to occur.
If this is your first drive and you plan on installing Windows 7 or 8 on it get a 2TB or smaller version or use a sold state drive. Otherwise windows will format this drive to 2 TB. This is because Windows wants to go on a non-GPT partitioned drive and for any drive to be able to use more than 2 TB, it needs to have a GPT partition. This isn't a hard drive defect but an OS installation defect. There are ways around this, but the workaround is very complicated for the novice and even for people who know a thing or two about computers. Rather, use this drive as a secondary drive on your desktop to store stuff. and use a SSD drive or any 2TB or smaller sized drive to install your Microsoft OS on. You can still install windows on it without doing a workaround but in that case the size of the drive will be 2 TB.
It's a standard 3TB back-up level drive, which CAN be formatted to 3TB unless you're on an older OS (which is an OS problem, not a Hard Drive problem). It's not fast so I wouldn't use it for anything other than backing up data locally
Quick and easy to install using the full 3TB or split in half. Disappointed that even when found cheaper online wasn't able to get the discount as Best Buy uses the model number and not the WD part number
it's a standard 3Tb hard drive, however you can't format passed 2Tb and you have to install another program to get the rest to work as an 2nd partition.
waste of time
