This one is defective

It took 2 and a half days to do the first back up and then wouldn't back up anymore after that. Tech support had me try several things to get it to work, lost the first backup. Tried again the second time, after being told that it should only take 2.5 to 3 hours, after an hour and only 100GB backed up (5%) I cancelled the backup and was told to return it to the store for a replacement.

Product good; problems with ordering and delivery

I bought this drive to back up many movies I have burned to DVDs over the years. So far it has performed well, as expected. My problems started with placing the order. First, I could not use Paypal to pay for the order. Customer Service said there must be some problem with my ID or address though I have previously paid for several orders before with BestBuy using PayPal. So Customer Service let me use my credit card instead. Shortly afterwards, I got an email that the credit card purchase did not go through. Again, Customer Service said the problem may have been a difference in ID or address between BestBuy and the credit card, though I have also used my credit card without problem in the past. Finally, the order did not arrive on the day that the tracking information said the order had been delivered, leaving me to wonder if the order had been delivered to the wrong address in our community mail box; not unheard of with Canada Post. The order did arrive two days later and I was advised post facto that the delivery date had been changed, but I was not so informed at the time. I have sent feedback to BestBuy about my experience. I have shopped regularly at BestBuy online. This is the first time I've had these kind of problems, but if they happen again I'll be shopping elsewhere. By the way, Customer Service was always courteous and helpful so the problem does not lie there.

Does the Job

First purchase of WD drive with new design. Pros - looks great, tons of storage. Helium drive fully enclosed so dust is now a non-issue except for cleaning of outer case. I've always trusted WD drives Cons - adapter prongs now face vertical instead of horizontal so be prepared to hunt down new power bar if you accumulate hard drives as you require more space (unless you have swivel heads). Packaging went from beautiful dark blue to hideous white and green with a pointless wrap-a-round cardboard sleeve that just adds another layer to go through. Also, no light on front to indicate when drive is active. I've bought several WD drives through the years and was happy with the adapter until now. Why would anyone change the direction of the prongs in such a way that it requires a power bar with outlets shifted 90 degrees from the norm? Prior to this I was thrilled as the adapters got narrower and narrower so that it was easy to plant them side by side on the power bar. Again, why the change?

WD My Book 8TB 2.5 USB 3.0 External Hard Drive

I bought the first one Jan 2017, it goes very well. I backup all the files from my old computer to it. Last month I bought another one to back up all the video files from my old external HDD which is a big cabinet with 4 units of 3.5" HDD inside. WD My Book is a very compact unit much smaller than my old one, very easy to move around, the motor noise is not notable. The price is the cheapest in the market for such 8TB capacity and size. Some users may find it noisy( vibration hum noise) if they put it not in right position, the noise is gone when it sits on its rubber foot, or put it on top of a book. The only drawback is the writing speed, it is about 20MB/s - 23MB/s. It will take a few days to complete backup of 7TB files. I would recommend it to anyone who does not need high writing speed.

Good buy

Already have a WD My book 3TB which has worked like a charm. Had another brand but its OS was pits. This 8TB great buy, works great. But lost nearly 1TB for some reason with the way they set up the drive to work. Other than that, good reliable drive.

Archive Drive

Excellent archive drive. Works well. Only quibble is that there is no drive light to indicate that is on and files are transferring.
