HUGE router, NOT HANGABLE

This device is NOT HANGEABLE!?? I repeat NOT HANGABLE! It has a very large footprint, how hard would it have been to leave two holes for screws at the bottom? I bought three of them for a customer install and likely will have to return two or all three as the customer is asking to minimize visual impact. This means I can't hang it behind a drawer, or curtain, or make almost any effort to conceal this HUGE router. You just have to leave it resting on a desk. Don't be fooled by forum postings where people see little rubber plugs and assume that underneath is a way to hang it. When you remove the rubber plugs, they just hide the screws holding the case together, there is NO WAY TO HANG this device. Now I have to postpone my install for a week or two and re-order more appropriate devices, and return these. So basically, Asus has no high end devices capable of being installed discretly. This is a major headache! Very disappointed and had lots of my time wasted.

Great when I got one that works

The first of these that I received was a lemon. I set it up and the 5Ghz signal strength was no better than my existing router(RT-N65U). I updated the firmware and the signal strength improved. After a couple of hours, the internet connection no longer worked on the 5Ghz band. Eventually, devices were completely unable to connect to the 5Ghz band at all. I hard reset to factory defaults, set it up again and the same issue persisted. I exchanged it at the local store in hopes that the first one was just a lemon, and it was. The new one works perfectly for over 2 weeks now and the 5Ghz signal strength was fantastic. I have a less than ideal placement in the basement, and the strength is great on the upper floors.

Good signal throughout the house

I was debating whether I should get this well received router or the Orbi. I have weak signals in various areas of my house so I figured that the jump to an AC router was warranted. I thought that the Orbi would be more suited to my needs but at almost half the price, I figured I'd give the AC3100 a try. Worst case scenario, I could exchange it for the Orbi within the 15 day period should it not work out for me. I did end up returning the AC3100 but only because I received a defective unit. The performance was shoddy and then it completely stopped working 4 days in. I got the same one again and so far, so good. I use airplay a lot and used to experience a lot of drop outs. This does not happen anymore. I also had issues streaming netflix on my iPad in the garage while working out. This has not occurred again. I also love the fact that I can set up a separate guest account with a separate SSID. We have a NAS and don't want to give our tenant access to our main network. So far, no complaints. I'm very happy with signal strength. All of the weak signal zones have been eliminated and I didn't have to buy the more expensive Orbi.

Excellent Product - 5 Stars

Asus is very reliable in routers and this one is no exception. Great coverage and incredibly easy to setup. Highly recommend.

Outstanding performance

Really good modem very fast and stable. However, 5GHZ range and stability neess some improvement. Than again it could be just my setup. I get 159mbps using speed test ookla on first floor (modem is upstairs) pricey but worth [price] on sale now.

Very Good Overall

Pros: 1. Software has built in support for Open VPN clients running on router. 2. Fast 1.4 Ghz dual band processor. 3. Built in WTFast online gaming accelerator. 4. Decent coverage area on both 2.4 and 5.0 Ghz bands. 5. Nice user interface, the best I've encountered to date. 6. Basic setup is super quick and easy. 7. Trend Micro AiProtection built in. Cons: 1. Fairly large physical size and sits flat requiring a fair bit of room, there are keyhole mounts on the bottom for wall mounting if preferred. 2. Bit pricey, wait for sale pricing if you can. If you have seen my reviews on the ASUS AC2400 and AC5300 you will know that my primary focus is finding a router that will run an Open VPN client on the router without sacrificing a significant amount of internet speed. Well..... I have come to the conclusion that is just not possible with current router technology. However, I have finally settled on this router as being the best compromise for features/speed/and price. I'm not a router expert, but from what I understand until routers are manufactured with Floating Point Unit Processors, this is as good as it gets for VPN speeds. As for the basics of this router, very solid. has all the latest features and functions you will find on any higher end router, good quality materials and construction, stable wireless connections on both bands, and one of the nicest user interfaces I've come across to date. Wireless coverage is good, but I didn't really see any improvement on signal strength to the far reaches of my home on the 5.0 Ghz band compared to my old router. but still good usable signal. (router is in the basement of 4 level split so lots of floors and walls to transmit through) I'm not a gamer, so I can't provide any comment on how effective the WTFast gaming accelerator performs. But it's there for those who desire it. I also don't use the built in security from Trend micro. I already run various software based anti-virus/malware/internet security solutions, and in my experience these programs can interfere with each other if you start running them simultaneously. But again, a nice feature that is there if you want to use it. Overall I would have no hesitation recommending this router. I purchased on sale and feel it is a good overall value at the sale price, a bit pricey otherwise. 5 stars overall, and I would have given it 5 stars on performance and value as well if the processor was up to the task of running a VPN client without throttling the internet speed.

Not The Performance I Was Hoping For...

I bought the RT-AC3100 in hopes of extending my wifi coverage (claims 5400 sq.ft) and faster link speeds over my current Asus AC1900 router. Neither the increased coverage nor the speed increase were realized, and I actually had slightly lower throughput than my current router. Asus makes a great router and their gui interface is the best on the market, but this "upgrade" was not worth it for me. Returned.

Great upgrade from my Netgear WNDR3700

A very worthwhile upgrade for me. The WebUI and Android app are user friendly for beginners and advanced users alike. Wireless signal is very stable around my 2200 sq. ft. home. Lots of excellent security features. It handles all 15 wireless devices in my home with ease...streaming 4K is wonderful with very fast load times and no buffering delays. Media server is fast and seamless when streaming to my TV. Definitely the best router I've owned and worth the price (I got it on sale). One final thing...it's the coolest looking router I've ever had! Maybe it was designed by Lamborghini.

Asus RT-AC3100 is wonderfull purchase.

Settings. Default settings were pretty fast. After exploring the result by inSSIDer application, I have discovered that the settings should be done more carefully. First I loaded the latest firmware. Then spent some time to learn about new features and set them. Put the same SSID name and password for both 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz bundles. Reboot and the SSID application shows my max chanel rate 1730 Mb/s. I am absolutely winner with my neighbors. The main reason to buy the router was I had the old Asus RT-N66U that work pretty fine. The problem was the router and my office room were pretty far with some wall and barrier as obstacles. I could not put the wired Ethernet cable and could not install the router in my room. The signal in the room had been pretty slow and unstable. When the number of wifi devices has doubled the situation became even worse. Tried to use some range extender and return them by the reason the old RT66U was not good to share another channel with the range extender. I will not give you some pretty boring numbers or technologies names. To test the result I just streamed 4K video in worse spot of the appartement. Every body know your own bad spot. I used the iPad Retina, Surface Pro 4 (not very good in WiFi), Dell M3800 Precision (same as Surface Pro 4). All work well, without any lug or stops. I am happy to have been decided to buy the most modern router that use the same hardware, CPU and technologies like the most expensive RT-AC5300 three bundle router. In the boxing day December 26 I kept in my hand the good router RT-AC2400 with 30CAD rebate, total price about 254CAD. Instead, I paid more to get the more modern AC3100 vs AC2400, router, but more expensive by 349CAD. I highly recommend the router for people who know more tan just AC name. The price is pretty high. That's only one complain that I am going to solve by putting my old RT66U in kijiji.

Only little gain in performance compare to AC3200

I are currently using Netgear X6 R8000 with the most updated firmware. I bought this Asus Ac5300 and Ac3100 both are new products this year. I am so disappointed because only little gain in 2.4G and the same performance on 5G. the AC3100 even do better than AC5300 on both 2.4G and 5G. So you can save your money to find a good deal on Ac3200 product. If you really want to buy the newest one then AC3100 is better choice than AC5300.

Awesome so far

I have owned several Dlink, Cisco and Linksys wireless routers over the last decade or more; obviously as a new product this one should be and is faster (way, way faster) and better provisioned but the installation process and the browser based interface are also superb. The network tool set and internet traffic log are also excellent. USB 3.0 on the front is a very minor irritant. I currently show 10 network clients connected (TVs, cellphones, laptops, desktops, VOIP) 2 of which have 5Ghz capability and are achieving 550-650 Mbps speeds on the 5GHz band. Can't comment on sustained connections or area coverage yet as it's too new but so far it seems excellent in this regard too. I wish it cost a little less but it's price seems commensurate both with the current market/competition and product performance. Some people may want to wait for the ASUS RT-AC88U which doesn't seem to be locally available right now (Toronto area) and which has 8 ethernet ports instead of 4 but is otherwise similar if not identical to the AC3100. Great product ASUS. PS...I ordered it yesterday, Dec 17/15 at about 2:30 PM and was delivered this morning (Dec 18/15) at 09:45 AM. Great job Best Buy and Canada Post as well.
