perfect product

This is first projector I bought. It works very good. Easy to setup. Picture and color are decent. The menu and remote were easy to control.More than I expected. I love it.

Impressively vibrant output

I received this product from the manufacturer, in exchange for my impartial review. The unit powers up quickly and the first thing I noticed was how bright the output was and how vibrant the colours were. Even with a 60 watt bulb lighting the room, the picture was still more than bright enough for viewing. The fan is a bit loud. If you’re not using audio then it’s very noticeable but I guess this is needed to keep a high output lamp cool. I only tested out the HDMI, USB and VGA connections. The auto detect works well and was faster than I was at manually selecting the input device. My Macbook is a 2012 model and the audio didn’t come through on the HDMI connection but the manual does say that older Macs don't support audio via HDMI. When using the USB connection, video didn’t play from the computer as smoothly as the HDMI but that is probably a function of the cable vs the projector. The audio came through fine via the USB cable. I connected my Apple TV to the projector via HDMI and that worked out very nicely. Both picture and sound quality were great. With the volume dialed up to 7, I didn’t even hear the fan going. At a distance of about 9 ft from the wall, the picture projected was about 7 ft wide. This will be nice for summertime outdoor movies. The PC Free feature is a nice option that lets you project photos and videos from a flash drive but the list of compatible file types is short and restrictive. For video, it can only read AVI files but I still had to use a converter to reformat my AVI files to match the compatible codec. Also, the allowable resolution is only 1280 X 720. The resulting picture quality was good but a bit pixelated in some areas. For my purposes of projecting some ghostly images for Halloween, the resolution was good enough and it’s nice not to have to run a line from an input device to do so. Overall I’m really impressed with the picture quality this can output. With all the different input ports I can’t imagine it not being compatible with anything out there - even an old VCR via the RCA ports. The speaker is actually pretty good as long as you have a decent input device/ cable. For me what is keeping it from getting a perfect score is the somewhat noisy fan and the short list of compatible picture and video files for the PC Free feature. I wish the unit could handle .MOV and MP4 files too since those are still very common file formats. It would have been nice to get a form fitting carrying case with it too. Otherwise, this is a great unit that would make you wonder why you’d bother getting a big screen tv. With the right audio set up and a big empty wall, this would make an awesome home theatre.

Fall in love with movies again!

After watching my first movie with the Epson HC1040 I was absolutely blown away and quickly came to the conclusion that this technology has finally reached the point where cinema-like quality is finally available to experience at home. WOW! After owning 3 home projectors from other manufacturers all claiming to “Bring Home the Theatre” I personally gave up on projectors due to the terrible image quality. My biggest gripe with the other projectors I owned were details in both the dark and light areas of the image. There was poor dynamic range making the image look dull, controls for brightness basically just brightened the lamp washing everything out and adding saturation to colours made the image glow artificially. My previous experience was so terrible that when I received this product from the manufacturer, in exchange for my impartial review I thought the innevitable but things quickly changed. My first impressions of the HC1040 was how small it was. The projector’s compact size is unobtrusive and is small enough for portability but I plan to mount this to the ceiling for a more permanent installation. I initially connected my MacBook to watch a VanGogh IMAX movie with the HC1040 to quickly review the image quality. After a little wait for the projector to warm up I had the keystone adjusted and connection established, it was pretty much plug and play. As the movie played I could not believe the incredible picture quality each glorious scene delivered. The cinematography of the IMAX produced movie delivered from the Epson HC1040 was nothing less than majestic in it’s image rendition and scale. The picture was big, bold and beautiful like I’ve never scene before in a home projector. The only comparison I can make with what I had scene was the visual experience I have in a large cinema. The details in the lightest colours in the clouds were brought out and the subtle shades of grey were in the shadows making the image feel three dimensional. The factory picture settings, all set to 50, is calibrated perfectly so you don’t even need to adjust anything. I turned on the room lights and found the vibrance and brightness were just as visible, the HC1040 light has power. The Epson HC1040 has brought back the joy and appreciation of watching a beautifully crafted movie, seeing the proper colour grading and nuance of the moving picture. The scale and image quality sucked me into the story I was watching immediately. There is absolutely no comparison with watching a movie on an illuminated flat screen TV then on a projected screen which it was intended for. I have movies on my phone, tablet and computer which has depreciated the whole viewing experience. The technology has finally arrived in this small simple package which will bring back the days of all the goodness of watching analogue film with it’s silky image rendition and subtle noise. I highly recommend the Epson HC1040, if you want to truly fall in love with the experience of watching movies again!

Awesome

Great projector! Great picture - very happy with the purchase. Love the auto-adjust feature (screen adjusts alignment depending on the surface you put it on). The things to keep in mind - the picture does not always fill the projected space (that's very likely because it adjusts the tilt - v - h - align of the picture cause the surface isn't perfectly straight). The fan is also quite noisy. The sound out of the project is amazing given that it is sound coming from a projector. Having said that, the sound isn't great at all! Overall, very happy with the purchase. A good projector for a small to medium budget. Would recommend.

Great First Time Projector

I received this product from the manufacturer, in exchange for my impartial review. This is my first projector and so far I’m pretty impressed. It was easy to hook up right out of the box, apart from having to get me a longer HDMI cable but that’s no issue really. I connected with my new long HDMI cable and I was surprised to see the brightness/contrast. It was better than I expected. Of course if you don’t have an HDMI cable you can connect using the L/R and VIDEO phono style connections. The menu and remote were easy to navigate and in minutes I was watching a movie. I tried the projector with the lights on and even then the screen and colour looked pretty solid. I live in a small space and finding just the right space to get my screen really large is challenging but even with a short distance I was able to get a 65 inch screen. My favourite part about this projector is that it has a built in speaker. It made for a very simple outdoor movie night. Of course it’s just a mono speaker and the sounds isn’t going to blow your mind but if you just want to set it up fast without having to buy another audio system it’s certainly a plus. The quality looked really good outside even at a large size around 8 feet wide. Perfect for an easy night out in the back yard with the family. Overall I’m very happy with this projector and would recommend this for anyone who is looking to buy.

Satisfied Customer

Bought this product in store a few weeks ago. Have experience using data projectors in the classroom but chose to buy a Home Theatre projector for use at home. Data projectors are built more for power point presentations and still shots whereas home theatre projectors are built for moving images / video. I wanted HD capability as I also purchased an Elite outdoor movie screen from Best Buy. I agree with the previous comments about the sound quality not being up to par. I knew that ahead of time because of my previous experience but I already had a portable mini Bose bluetooth speaker. When I wirelessly linked that to my iPad, used an HDMI cable and a Apple Dongle to connect the iPad to the HDMI cord...the sound was incredible! My wifi reaches outdoors and I am able to access unlimited movies online. A previous comment was made about it not coming with a carrying case, I too wish it did as I have created an outdoor movie night bin and placed all the electronics, cables, and other items in it so that it is easy to grab and set up at a moments notice. I just wish the projector had a case to protect it from getting damaged. Will need to see if I can find one to purchase. Now it's not just the homes with pools that people want to congregate at! Many guests have commented on how professional looking and sounding this setup is. I am sure many happy memories will be created in the years to come with friends and family!

Great projector

Pro It's a good general use projector. Video quality if beautiful. Great contrast. Easy to adjust keystone. Con Remote is ok. I wish it came with a laser pointer. I wish it was smaller and it does not come with a carrying case.
