Twilight Princess HD Review and Comparison

Overview Twilight Princess HD is about a young ranch hand, who is about to take a trip to Hyrule and the capital Castle Town to deliver a package from the neighbouring province of Ordon when fate takes a different turn. Due to unexplained forces, his friends are captured and he sets off to find and save them. He encounters something very strange and unsettling and is imprisoned. During his situation, he meets an imp--like creature named Midna and set off to save Hyrule from evil. In this review, I will be covering, graphics, sound, gameplay mechanics and content. Graphics Nintendo and Tantalus did quite a bit of work with the renovations to the textures of the game and they look much better over the GameCube and Wii versions. The character, enemy, object and landscape models may have had some updates but not hugely noticeable from the originals. I did notice some colour banding in the sky, but some of these could be nit picking at the most as everything is still a huge improvement over the originals. 3.5/5 Sound Nintendo didn't do much to change the sound, however I think that there could have been improvements to at least the MIDI samples as evident in the night music as the same generic lady vocals and the Temple of Time choir sounds weren't much different from Malon and the Temple of Time from the Nintendo 64 days. 3/5 Gameplay Mechanics I played the game with use of both the Pro Controller and the GamePad. The Pro Controller, even though it lacks motion sensing of any kind was still very playable with powerful rumble and when I didn't want to use the GamePad worked very well and was akin to using the GameCube controller with the buttons mapped a bit differently. I am still used to using the Z button on the GameCube to call Midna or display the Portals and seem to still use that hand to do that function and realize that I just used an item when I didn't want to. The item spaces having three like in Ocarina is a definite improvement over the GameCube and flipping through them isn't a two-step process like with Wii for both Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. The GamePad's use as an on-the-fly inventory management and mini map, like on Wind Waker are welcome changes as well. 5/5 Content The added content (especially if you have the supported Amiibo figurines) also adds challenge with Hero Mode and the Cave of Shadows (which I still have to complete successfully) add some new and interesting ways to test your abilities like they did in Ocarina of Time 3D, Skyward Sword and others. Overall, the content is quite nice and adds enough to the game to make it feel fresh and like new. Having to purchase extra Amiibo can get a bit expensive, but if you already have Zelda, Windwaker Zelda, Link and Toon Link and Ganondorf and also have the Wolf Link and Midna Amiibos, newer content and extras can be added, however one can only use the individual Amiibos once per day. 4/5 Conclusion Overall, Twilight Princess is still a good game and I would recommend it if you are new to this game or are a dedicated Zelda fan, this game is highly recommended. 4/5 Total

Great Followup to 1st Game

Great follow up to first game...like that there are twists in this game where things are backwards so you can't just race through the game...things aren't always as they seem! Love the game and love the amibo...price of the game was worth just the amibo!

Nice update

A couple of issues with the controls at times but otherwise a very nice update of a 10 year old game.

Fan-freakin-tastic!

I pre ordered this game at the last moment online to secure the amiibo that came with it. Launch day arrival (which was surprising and awesome) and gorgeous packaging. Nice turn on a remake of a 10 year old Gamecube/ Wii title with lots of little fixes and extra content to make this game that much more enjoyable since 2006. No regrets

Great game

This game is very nice in HD, and the amiibo is great, and I'd highly recommend it if you haven't played through it. Now, in my opinion, the games actual puzzles and gameplay seem a little lackluster to me; a great example: Hyrule field is a giant empty wasteland of nothing, that looks like a student in game-design college made it, it's just huge painted on circles of color and an expanse of nothing. For Nintendo, that's quite surprising, they are usually perfect at attention-to-detail work. The story and characters though are incredible, as well as the style and theme, Wolf Link and Midna are both amazing characters that I think will always stand the test of time. The game is very dark, and the village you start in is quite a wonderful place... There's lots to love and a little bit to not love, but it is just a re-release of an older game, so I have to give it credit for aging. If you've played this game before, and you love it, I'd recommend it, if you've never played it, I'd recommend it, (although wind-waker is better in HD, just because it's so damn gorgeous to look at.) But lastly if you have played it and weren't sure about it, I just wouldn't bother. It's the same game, and it hasn't aged as well as Ocarina or Windwaker, and Skyward Sword is like the second attempt at this game in some ways...

Fantastic HD Remake

As great of a game this was when it was first released, there were some issues that slowed down the game and the visuals weren't exactly the greatest in general and for long-time periods. This HD remake on Wii U fixes up these flaws, retaining the great gameplay, storyline and music while revamping the world with beautiful visuals (although not the greatest you'll ever see, it's still nice), several reorchestrated music, adjustments and tweaks for better gameplay, and additional features with the Wolf Link amiibo and the GamePad. This is definitely one of the greatest Zelda games you should get.

Amazing if you've never played before

i love Twilight Princess. It's not my favorite game in the series, but it's still a really good game. If you've never played it before, I would highly recommend this as the definitive version. Already a veteran of the game? Then maybe you should reconsider. The new amiibo is awesome, but will likely be available separately in the future. The game offers very little new. Even the HD graphics aren't that impressive (unlike Wind Waker HD, which really popped). Is it a good game? Absolutely. Is it worth buying it again? Maybe not.

Beautiful rendition

Twilight Princess is my favourite game of The Legend of Zelda series; I have both games for the GC and Wii. I was amazed at the amount of details in the HD remake, which were unnoticed in the originals. I'm glad they added Hero Mode, which is even more challenging when the Ganondorf amiibo was activated. Insta-wolf was a huge relief added to the gameplay. The Wolf Link amiibo is not only beautiful but the function to load your save file at the title screen and unlocks the hidden cave of Shadow is a great addition to the game. I would highly recommend this game to any newcomers to the Zelda franchise.

The same, marginally better

It's the same game. The Wii U integration is good and the porting work is solid, but that is to be expected for Nintendo, who like to crank up the polish on their games. As for the rest, well, it's Twilight Princess. If you've liked the original, then it's the same as ever, and you're pretty much better off dusting off your GameCube or your Wii copy and playing that one instead. If you've never tried it, then now's the perfect time to experience another great entry in the legendary franchise. It definitely has aged well, and is much better than I remembered it. I guess at the time I simply wanted a remake of Ocarina of Time, and I was disappointed to see that Twilight Princess wasn't. And it's a good thing it isn't. It is a great refinement of the formula established by its predecessors, and it stands strong on its own. Great game.

Great Remake

Twilight Princess is a solid game in the Zelda franchise with some bad pacing but great dungeon and item design. The art style doesn't quite hold up but this remake updates it to look about as good as you could hope for. There are some subtle changes to the design and the gamepad features help smooth out some of the original rough edges. The Wolf Link Amiibo that comes with this package has a nice build quality to but its use in the game is a little underwhelming.

Amazing

It is a HD remake of an already great game. The option of hero mode and ganondorf amiibo makes the game truly shine. These options cover Twilight Princess' only flaw, it's difficulty.

Great game! Awesome HD remake

The game's graphics are awesome. Really like the function of being able to transform using the Gamepad instead of having to use Midna, saves so much time. Also, the added dungeon that the amiibo allows you to access is a great addition.

So excited!!!

I just finished Skyward Sword today and I can't wait to get Twilight Princess now! I believe a lot of people gave 1 star because the price was originally listed as 99.99!! But now it's 79.99. Other than that, I am so so so excited! The amiibo functionality also looks amazing. I want to buy the Zelda amiibo so bad right now but unfortunately Best Buy does not have it. Cmon Best Buy, bring back all Legend of Zelda amiibos!

Best Zelda Game in the Series!

Yes, even better than Ocarina of Time or Link to the Past. The only thing that would make it better would be if they added the ability to howl as Wolf Link whenever and wherever you want. Let's Rank the Zeldas, shall we? 1. Twilight Princess 2. Ocarina of Time 3. Link to the Past 4. Majora's Mask 5. Wind Waker 6. The Adventure of Link 7. The Legend of Zelda 8. Link's Awakening 9. Oracle of Ages/Seasons 10. A Link Between Worlds 11. Four Swords Adventures 12. Skyward Sword 13. Phantom Hourglass 14. Minish Cap 15. Spirit Tracks

Amiibo adds so much! Are HD graphics noticeable?

Whoever is giving this a rating of 1.0/5 and doesn't provide a written description as to why, give us your explanation please. I'd like to know. The use of the Zelda, Link, Ganondorf and Wolf Link amiibos really add more value to the game. What I'm concerned is, are the HD graphics really a whole lot more than what we saw in the Wii version? I have a 4K TV and I thought the Wii Twilight Princess looked marvelous. What would have been nice is to have the "mirrored" option! To play the game in GCN or Wii mode. East-west mirrors, try playing the game in reverse! I'm glad that this game serves as a "precursor" to this all-new Zelda Wii U title coming later with the Wolf Link serving as our little "teaser" or reminder!

Howl if you hear me

The amiibo looks great, can't wait to get my hands on this! Twilight Princess featured some of the most fun and creative dungeons in the Zelda franchise. March can't come soon enough! Awoooo!
