BOUGHT 2 so far, I am going to buy the third one today , on sale
I received the H50 as a gift, otherwise I would be returning it immediately.
In the documentation they tell you, “H50 uses proprietary file format technology for optimal performance and reliability and therefore, THINKWARE AVI Converter or THINKWARE PC Viewer MUST be used for Video playback”.
What they don’t tell you is that if you save the avi files from their THINKWARE Converter or Viewer (yes, they provide this functionality) you have absolutely no way to view them afterward. You can only view files while they are on the micro SD card.
The THINKWARE Viewer does not have a menu and their AVI Converter does not convert anything.
I’ve tried several work-arounds, and reached out to their customer support several times but they have ignored my requests.
If you wanted this camera to share videos, or if you expect to be able to pull the files and provide them to police after an incident, you’re out of luck.
I definitely would not have bought this camera had I known about a really annoying bug that I'm not sure when/if it will get fixed (even though it's been acknowledged by the vendor). On startup, there's a really loud and annoying announcement saying "Please have a safe drive today". it cannot be turned off (due to the aforementioned bug) and it's embarrassing to a point where I have to keep my windows closed until after the message otherwise I get funny looks from people nearby. The quality is ok in daylight and suffers in low light conditions. But that's besides the fact as I can't get over the annoying message.
I wanted to go for a compact dashcam. This one is packed nicely and not Mac friendly, as another reviewer noted. The picture quality was not that good enough compared to its advertisement. I exchanged this one with X150.
H50 is a very small camera easily mounted and not terribly visible from outside. 720 video quality is very good (but no where near the superb 1080 of the F750 plus rear camera that I also own). This is a well engineered product which is likely to last, compared to many of the cheap knockoff cameras that may work for awhile. Thinkware service support is real and is helpful unlike most other dashcam makers.
The camera is a true "set it and forget it" device and gives good video and audio playback with their PC based software, or downloaded to a PC to view with VLC. To view the video on site however, you would need to be carrying a laptop, while the higher priced F750 has instant access via both an ipad or tablet for viewing at the scene of an accident.
I am well satisfied with this budget camera and it does the job as designed. Thinkware being a quality company will be upgrading firmware as the product line matures, ensuring the latest updates will be made available.
I also like the lack of a battery and the ability to survive the high summer temperatures of an enclosed vehicle.
In this rapidly evolving and maturing market place, Thinkware is a market leader in quality dash cams. You generally get what you pay for, and in my opinion, that is definately so with their product lines.
Very nice packaging, size and mounting equipment. It is small enough to fit behind even the bulkier rearview mirrors of modern vehicles (mine has sensors and antennas behind it, no problem).
Unfortunately it is not advertised to only be compatible with PCs. The viewer for this series of thinkware products is not available to mac users. Their newer cameras and accompanying software claim to support macs.
I gave 2 stars because it seems like a great product. Cant give any higher as I have not been able to assess the performance. Lost rating too because it should state PC only somewhere.
