This router uses a Broadcom chip for it's 5ghz bands. It CANNOT handle 80mhz at 5ghz and frequently crashes. You can only get a stable 5ghz band when it's scaled down to 40mhz in your advanced settings. And as a result, your 5ghz speeds will be reduced. Asus is not ready to dive into the 5ghz spectrum yet - as silly as it sounds. Returned.
this Dlink router kept crashing and gave me 500 kbs and over 9k ping
antennas are poor build quality and service is non existent. would never recommend Asus to my worst enamy
Doesn't like connected devices, this is an Asus software conflict and the last 3 routers I bought have had the same problem but they all claim they never heard about the issue, which is a lie. Asus tech support was terrible at best. If you have a very strict network layout, this won't work, not a professional's router, more for gamers who only use wifi.
Kinda sucks to buy a router but it only half works.
Thank you Best Buy for refunding my money.
Really sucks because Best Buy is great to deal with, too bad many devices they sell are sub-par or haven't been fully tested.
easy to install. Great performance. I recommended to my friends. You get what you pay.
Easy to install, big improvement in my system. You get what you pay. I recommended.
I have a 102 year old 3 story house, which is not exactly optimal for wireless reception. I had been using a D-Link dual band wireless router for the past year and a half, with luke-warm results. My wife and I use our iPads all the time at home, and we have two teenaged boys on multiple devices simultaneously (of course). I finally had enough of laggy video and crap download speeds, and after research, bought this router.
The setup was not idiot-proof and took half an hour or so to get everything where I wanted it - neophyte users would be well advised to either buy another router or cough up the Geek Squad fee to get this done stress-free.
Once the setup was complete, I have to say that the difference in in my Home Network performance is truly astounding. Surfing on any Wi-Fi device anywhere in the house is completely lag-free. Watching You tube videos is like watching Cable TV. I know that sounds silly, but I am not exaggerating - there is NO lag. When you choose a video, it starts immediately and plays through to completion without any pauses. This is exactly what I was looking for. I cannot yet comment on the wired performance advantages for the kid's X Box system, but I anticipate great things.
The ONLY downside to all this? ...too bad about the price. That's the only reason I deducted one star from my rating. Yes, this is cutting edge technology. Yes, it is REALLY, REALLY fast, and will handle as many users as we can reasonably throw at it, as a Home system....I suppose only time will tell, if this expenditure really pays for itself with the future purchase of some kind of 4K/UHD TV that can take full advantage of it's phenomenal bandwidth and throughput. I'm happy to report that negotiating a contribution from each of the kids toward the purchase price took the sting out of the deal ;)
I was dealing with major blind spots in my home. Some parts of my home could just not get a good signal. I tried placing my previous router (Asus AC 87U) in different locations, but to limited success. I tried using various range extenders (DLink AC1200 and Netgear AC1900) and while both helped to improve connectivity in the blind spots, it did very little to improve performance.
So I decided on a big bang approach after reading a review on the AC5300. And all I can say is not only are all blind spots in my home gone now, I have excellent performance from everywhere. Its so effective, I was able to return the WIFI range extenders I bought as they are no longer necessary.
The only negative with this device (other than the hefty price) is the size. You cant just hide this on a shelf. It commands attention and space. But once you find a nice home for it, you will not need another wifi router for your large home in the foreseeable future.
I'm in the IT field and have set up many home routers. This one is my favourite so far. The range on this model is incredible. Coverage is all over the whole house including the basement. It can handle a lot of traffic at once and many devices at the same time. Replaced my Apple Time Capsule with this unit and there is no comparison in range and performance. It's packed with features and very easy to use.
One downside is the size. You will need a good location with ventilation as the unit will run warm.
I grabbed one of these to replace my Netgear R8000 and I was not disappointed. This router handles our 15 devices with aplomb, has excellent range and just plain looks cool. It easily outperformed the Netgear in speed and coverage. I run mainly Apple devices and it's fully compatible with Time machine and everything else I've thrown at it. One small downer, The Asus firmware has issues right out of the box with Samsung Wireless printers so I deducted a star for that, you need to run Merlin WRT if you have a Samsung Wireless printer to make it work. Highly recommended !!!
This router is more for home users or office with 10 or more devices as this model focus is on throughput first, speed second and there are options on firmware. If you have less than 10 devices, go with the 3100 router, same throughput, speed, firmware and config settings.
As for Asus support, it pretty much begins and ends with whatever it has for you to download or buy as assessories. As for Asus support in any other form, its so lame, pathetic and void of support that it ranks amongst the worst of the worst. Judging by the numbers, it would be hard to tell who leads the pack in lack of support. I contacted Asus support to get some indication as to how to configure two of these routers in "Media mode" and some limp minded wonder spew came up with a link to the manual which has little more than a mention and no steps as to how. Might be because Asus hasn't been able to "Verify" the way in which its going to work, so it doesn't.
Really loves everything about this router; it performed perfectly, the apps were great.
Hardware failure 24 hours in, stopped broadcasting. Apparently there are hardware issues with some of these units. Others experienced horror of having it happen to them after the return period and being left with a paperweight; or sending it back to the manufacturer and having to buy something to patch them through. Some also noted it happened on the replacement router. Would have gone this route but I can't stare at it thinking it could fail at any point.
Very disappointed, really wanted this to perform like 90% of the reviews say.,
This is a monster router and it means BUSINESS! Easy set up, just hook up modem with router, open app....sit back and let it run it's course. Lightening speed, no internet drops, no lagging. No complaints from the kids regarding Xbox One disconnecting....lol Simply awesome!
Wow Wow Wow Super Fast Running Merlin 380.59
Do your self a favor and use Merlin 380.59 Firmware
The biggest selling point for me about this router isn't the speed as that is a secondary point as the first point is THROUGHPUT as this router has the ability to serve whatever you have connected to your network. Hardwired, wifi, adapters or androids with 4K or a half dozen kids doing their level best to shoot, kill or conquer everything on this planet or not. Game players will have their own special connection options with this router. All things said and done, if and when you go to update your wifi adapters, your laptops or PCIe wifi cards, you'll find they are limited with their Rx & Tx receive and send speeds. Nothing near what this router will provide so its like buying a race car, big engine, plenty of gas and ready to beat whatever is out there but there's nobody to race against and nothing to make any real use of it although the bandwidth is its biggest saving grace.
Huge amounts of streaming, gaming and other bandwidth monsters will be served well with this one.
I had a Lynksys WRT1900ac and it was good when it wanted to be, but one too many times the 2.4 signal would disappear and some other problems so in this one came.
I have nothing negative to say, I'm not a networking guru but I am a power user at any given moment I have about 30 devices on WiFi and cam have 4 or 5 devices streaming HD at the same time. Using speed test I consistently achieve about 10-15MB p/s faster then the Lynksys. Have been using it for a few weeks now and no dropped signal no issues and I really like it's interface.
Very happy with it.
dont run good
Asus routers have always been world-class, top of the industry. And this one, the RT-AC5300, fortifies that position. What a beast. The AsusWRT management interface is incredible - especially for advanced networking users. It provides amazing management tools and your customisation options are endless - including setting specific VLAN tags for individual LAN ports and the WAN port.
I now use this router exclusively and paired with a MANAGED D-Link gigabit switch I have been able to eliminate the ridiculously lousy Bell Home Hub 2000 from my Fibe TV & Internet setup COMPLETELY! It is unplugged and sitting in the box. To do this you must have Bell Fibe service via FIBRE TO THE HOME technology; Fibre to the neighbourhood will not work. FTTH users will have an optical network terminal (ONT) where the fibre cable comes into the house and this serves as your "modem" - with a *managed* switch you can set the proper VLAN settings to be directed to the ASUS AC-5300 and BOOM! Your Fibe TV AND Internet services are working through this monstrosity of epicness.
What a beauty and the capabilities are endless with this router. I have Bell's Gigabit Fibe service (940mbps/100mbps) and with this router I am now actually achieving these speeds both through LAN *AND* WIFI! Of course the client device needs to support such speeds but of my AC devices that are capable of the speed are now actually getting it over WiFi.
I absolutely recommend this product to anyone looking to upgrade their network - whether it's better WiFi speed or range, this router will do the job and FAST. If you're with Rogers cable you'll need to put your modem in bridge mode before using this router, and if you have Bell Fibe (FTTH only) you can entirely eliminate their Hub from your setup using a managed switch with custom VLAN settings.
Thanks Asus for another world-class router!
4 of the 8 external antennas have weak hinges and the antennas fall over. Asus tech support is horrible. Very disappointed with the build quality and support. Other manufacturers like D-Link just replace faulty antennas, Asus makes you send your router in for repair just to replace the removable antennas. I've never encountered any router that had poorly constructed antennas like this one.
