Great Lens!

I have had this lens for about two months now and I use it for both video and photography I simply LOVE it! If you're debating between this lens and the f/1.4 just get this one the .4 difference doesn't make a HUGE difference. Love the low aperture, the only reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because is IT a LITTLE BIT difficult to focus but with practice you will get used to the different focus settings! LOVE LOVE LOVE WOULD BUY AGAIN

Good price for a f1.8 lens

For the price on sale, this is a good lens if you want to try a f1.8 and like a small size lens. Acceptable sharpness for still photos with f2 or slower settings. Focusing can be a bit off (front or back) and slow, hit and miss when using spot focus for small area at f1.8, but excellent in live view. Had to return lens few times to get one that is reasonable (Best Buy has excellent exchange policy). Focusing noise can be picked up in video mode so I would not recommend this use for quite scenes (my 18-135mm is much better). Without stabilization, try keeping the shuttle speed at 1/160s or faster to avoid hand shakes.

Best lens I own

I've taken all of my best pictures with this lens. Not as versatile though as like a 18-55mm so you'l want to make sure you still carry that with you too (or maybe a 24mm would be a good partner?)

Not for video

Great for low light and Bokeh BUT the autofocus is not that silence and quick. For videos it's a step down from a kit lens in terms of Autofocus.

A must have lens!!!

I bought this in store on sale. I have never owned a 50mm lens before or anything with such a low aperture capability. The first day I had it I took one of the best photos I have ever taken with any lens with an amazing depth of field. 100% recommend this lens.

Excellent prime lens for a great price

The image quality is great and the wide aperture makes it great for low light. Quite auto focus motor makes it a good lens for video too.

Prime lens great for portraits and bokeh

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens has a very wide aperture (f/1.8) which allows it to collect a lot of light. Because of the wide aperture you get great depth of field effects, with scrumptious bokeh! The focal length of 50mm is "zoomed in" when compared to a 18-55mm kit lens, which makes it amazing for portrait photography, allowing very intimate compositions. To frame the photograph differently you must move closer or further from your subject, because this is a prime lens and not a zoom lens. The "STM" means it has a stepping motor, which allows continuous auto-focus when filming video. Overall I'd say this lens is great for portraits and great for bokeh, but also makes a very good walking around lens for general photography.

Great portrait lens

f/1.8 aperture is nice and large allowing very shallow depth of field and great bokeh. This results in your subject being in focus, while the background blurs. Yum! 50mm focal length means this lens is more "zoomed in" than the standard 18-55mm IS STM kit lens you might have received with your camera. For this reason the lens is amazing for portrait photography. Portraits of your family members and pets come out intimate and great!

Wedding purchase

Bought this lens to do my own wedding tried it out on the super moon we had recently and it performed superior to the stock 18-55 lens. Definitely a Best Buy.I give it a 5 star rating the star buttons not working this visit.

Essential For Video, Great For Stills.

Low light video and photography is always a challenge but this little lens handles both equally well. The focus is near silent when capturing video. I tend to shoot stills of musical acts in less than stellar lighting conditions and this lens gives me some pretty good results for this price point.

Fav. Prime Lens

I shoot basketball photos in extremely dim high school gyms and this lens makes my photos look great. The depth of field and f/stop allow my photos to be sharp and bright even when I have speedy point guards on the court. Pretty much all gyms have horrible lighting but with this lens, I can get some great action shots. Bought it in Jan. 2016. Extremely happy with this purchase.

Good for Stills

This lens is great for giving you that extra boost of brightness in an otherwise low lighting setting such as wedding receptions. However, I primarily use my dslr for videos and you have to be standing quite far away from your subject to use this lens which means more potential for traffic in front of your shot and that your sound is that much farther away. If your videos include a lot of tight shots of face, then this could be useful for you.

cannot auto focus in cold temperature

very good picture overall, sharp. i took it outside when temperature was -19 degree, after a while, it cannot auto focus properly( the light indicator is not on) another problem is that it makes noise during the auto focus even at room temperature.

50 mm prime lense

I have to admit the pictures taken with this lense are superior to the ones taken with the 18-55 mm lense. Because of the wide aperture one is able to capture good compositions in low lights conditions. I am very happy with the sale price I got from Bestbuy and the quick delivery.. Only drawback the lense feels light not solid made on the other hand it produces excellent pictures and zooms very well. An excellent buy among the prime lenses

Great lense at an affordable price

This is a great lens with sharp images. 1.8 large aperture opening enables very tight depth of field and great bokeh. I specially like the STM motor. which still make a bit of noise while focusing but the lens is mostly used for still, so this noise in irrelevant. Metal mount gives the lens more stability. Lens build and quality is extremely good considering the price. I strongly recommend this lens for portraits.

Good Product - Delivery Took Forever

I ordered this product right after the holidays Dec 25 and it did not ship until the 27th. No worries on that since it was Christmas season. The package did not arrive until Jan 6. Had it not been on sale for a [price] before taxes I would not have been pleased.

great lens

It was the first prime lens I owned...purchased it a year ago and takes great portraits and also great for tight close shots for nature photography... It also creates a nice soft glow if you need that effect. Great starter prime lens.

Best Lens in my Collection

I love this lens and its is on my camera almost at all times. Being such a low costing lens, with such a wide aperture, images always come out looking sharp. My only issue with the lens would be you cannot focus unless the lens is attached to the camera, and that the camera is on. But other than that minor thing which is more of a personal view, overall i love this lens and its the lens used the most because of how sharp the images come out and also the shallow dept of field which the lens could provide at f/1.8

Great lens

Bought this a couple of weeks ago, and it's great in nearly every situation. I've tried the f/1.8 II, and while it's also a great lens, the STM's improvements make it well worth the price. Also, bokeh.

Amazing Lens

Just picked this up as my first lens! The image quality is by far better than the included Kit Lens and a must have if you're into taking portrait photography. Low light performance is amazing as well. It has a solid build and looks great mounted on my SL1. I never owned the previous version however from what i was told, the image quality is the same. Upgrade only if you want the STM / metal mount feature. For this price you can't go wrong.
