Very Happy with this Camera

If you are looking for a pocketable camera, this will not do. If you are looking for a great video shooter, you will also find this lacking. The G1X II is an alternative to a bulky DSLR outfit. It has gorgeous image quality, very good optics, it can be comfortably shoulder-carried or stuffed in a backpack, and it comes with Canon’s excellent G-series touch screen UI. I compared this camera to the G7X and the the G1X Mark I. The G7X lens performance was very disappointing. Exceedingly soft edges below 50MM equivalent and F5.6. Otherwise, a capable shooter. By comparison, the optical quality of The G1X Mark I (which I also own) is superb wide open. The Mark II lens is marginally softer in the corners as compared to the Mark I at f2.0 (but still quite acceptable). However it is almost unusable at f2.0 when in MACRO mode. Stopped down to 4.0 and the corners return to pin sharp in MACRO. I have big hands and appreciate having a larger “point and shoot” camera with controls I can easily work. The dual control rings around the lens are fully assignable and you can save two custom settings. Anyone familiar with the G-series UI will feel at home with this camera. The AUTO program tends to favour fully-open apertures. The latest firmware release (1.1) seems to have solved that problem for most outdoor shooting conditions. It also stops down the lens in MACRO, leading to much better results. Before this change, I had to shoot all my MACROs in aperture-preferred mode.

It's no that bad?!

Nice pictures, not bad in low light. Auto focus is little slow. Auto focus while taking videos was noisy. For a point and shoot it's big. I was able to get my hands on a G7X Mark 2 to compare. Hard to find (G7X Mark 2) in this town. Yeah I returned the G1X Mark 2.
