DJI Phantom 4 Overview

DJI Phantom 4 Overview

Lift off with the DJI Phantom 4 & experience increased speed, longer flight times, a brilliant 4K camera, & great features like Obstacle Avoidance & ActiveTrack.

Elevate your imagination with the DJI Phantom 4. It features an obstacle avoidance system that senses objects to avoid collisions, taking the fear out of flying. TapFly and ActiveTrack self-flying features make it easy to capture the exact footage you want. The Phantom 4 records in 4K UHD and Full HD 1080p at 120fps for slow motion video.

More Information

Imagine if the world was your blank canvas. You could take your creative vision to new heights. Literally. The DJI Phantom 4 is your creative flying sidekick. With self-flying features you can focus on realizing your artistic dream while this flying camera does all of the hard work, capturing your masterpiece in 4K UHD.

With TapFly you can send the drone to fly in the exact direction you want. No long setups or ruined footage because of a bad angle. Create that sweeping pan across a sun-soaked valley or capture a fading sunset as it disappears behind snow-capped peaks. The only limit to where you can send the Phantom 4 is your imagination.

ActiveTrack lets you choose your subject, and with a single tap the Phantom 4 will follow them wherever they go. Use it as a training tool. Set the Phantom 4 to follow while you run, swim, paddle, or whatever your sporting passion. The Phantom 4 will follow at a safe distance and allow you to analyze your performance later. No need to rely on someone else to film you.

The Phantom 4 takes the fear out of flying. Obstacle avoidance uses advanced sensors to avoid, hover over, or go around objects in the flight path. No more worrying about collisions and damage to the drone. Removing these barriers to piloting a drone means you can rely on this flying sidekick to turn your creative genius into cinematic gold.

What you need to know:

  • Flying is for everyone: TapFly lets you direct the drone to fly in any direction with a simple tap. No need for a remote controller. Turn on Obstacle Avoidance and Phantom 4 will automatically avoid obstacles, and even reroute around obstructions if needed.
  • Visual Tracking: ActiveTrack lets you lock onto your subject with just a few taps and track them as they move. No beacon or transmitter needed. The Moving POI feature circles around your subject as they move, making even the most demanding shots painless.
  • Sport mode: Designed for more experienced pilots, Sport mode takes advantage of the Phantom 4's agility and positioning systems for fast controlled flight up to 72km/h (44mph).
  • More ways to fly: The Phantom 4 is also equipped with Position mode and Attitude mode. Position mode lets the pilot access normal flight controls. Attitude mode holds the drone's altitude and level while switching off satellite positioning, allowing the Phantom 4 to move more naturally, ideal for smooth filmmaking movements.
  • Obstacle avoidance: The Obstacle Sensing System takes the fear out of flying, enabling the Phantom 4 to sense and react to obstacles. It avoids collisions by coming to a full stop, going around an object, or hovering over it. This sensor system makes the Return to Home feature smarter, as it will avoid and reroute away from obstacles. It can be enabled in ActiveTrack, TapFly, Position mode, and all Intelligent Navigation functions.
  • On-board 4K video camera: Record every flight in dazzling 4K quality at up to 30 frames per second. It can record slow-motion video in Full HD 1080p at 120fps or snap 12-megapixel photos that look sharper and crisper than ever.
  • Integrated gimbal: A built-in 3-axis, u-frame stabilization gimbal cancels out unwanted camera movements during flight, ensuring your footage stays smooth and your snapshots sharp. The gimbal and camera system are integrated into the body, bringing it closer to the aircraft's centre of gravity. It is also made of a rigid and strong composite material.
  • Exceptional image quality: The Phantom 4 camera's lens has been redesigned. It's made up of 8 separate elements, reducing chromatic aberration and minimizing lens distortion. Improved optical performance means you get sharper, clearer video and images.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi: The Phantom 4 uses integrated Wi-Fi to transmit the video downlink and on-screen data to your mobile device via the DJI GO app. A 2.4GHz transmission frequency ensures the drone stays receptive, even if you're flying at distances of up to 5 kilometres away.
  • Live HD View: Stream real-time HD 720p video from your camera to your mobile device. This crystal-clear view lets you experience a whole new world and makes it easy to get that perfect shot every time. This low-latency video transmission technology is extremely resistant to interference, offering you better control when flying.
  • Stay high in the sky for longer: Enjoy up to 28 minutes of flight time on a single charge with the reliable 5350mAh LiPo battery. The intelligent battery also lets you know how long you can keep flying and when it's time to head back via the GO app on your mobile device.
  • Vision Positioning: Whether you want to fly inside a building or low beside a river's edge, Vision Positioning technology makes any type of filming possible. Equipped with visual and ultrasonic sensors, this drone scans the ground beneath it to search for patterns. These patterns help the drone identify its position so it can move accurately.
  • Intelligent Flight Positioning: With GPS and GLONASS connectivity, the Phantom 4 connects faster to satellite signals, allowing for extreme accuracy in the air.
  • Autopilot safety features: Worry-free autopilot functions ensure your drone stays within reception range. If the connection between the controller and drone is broken, the autopilot takes over and brings your drone back to you, complete with an autopilot landing.
  • App integration: Download the free DJI GO app and connect it to your drone to capture flight logs, practice your flight skills with a flight simulator, play back past flights, and gain full access to on-board camera settings in real time. The easy video editor also allows you to create professional-looking movies in a flash. The app is compatible with devices running iOS 8.0 or later and Android 4.1.2 or later.
  • Personalized control: Customize everything from control stick sensitivity to the operation of dedicated function buttons to match your flying style. This gives you the precise control you want to realize your creative vision.
  • Aerodynamic design: A magnesium skeleton reduces weight, maximizes rigidity, and minimizes vibrations. The core is redesigned, lifting the centre of gravity, improving balance, and enhancing agility. The sleek composite body is engineered to minimize buffeting when flying in strong winds, making flying more predictable and precise.
  • Aerial control: Motors have been refined for increased flight efficiency and raised to allow the Phantom 4 to go faster without propellers appearing in your footage. They're designed to work with the DJI Push-and-Release propellers that allow the aircraft to be more responsive to commands.

Misleading warranty stated in product description, common defective batteries

DJI drones work well when they work, but if you research online you will find that the batteries often fail and are unusable. Mine failed the first time I used it, which was more than six months after purchasing the drone, controller, battery combo. My kit came with two batteries. The issue is the warranty. As you will read in the product description on this website, BestBuy advertises a one year warranty on the product, however DJI only warranties the batteries for six months. Nowhere will BestBuy tell you that until you return the defective battery. So now I have been back and forth in person, on the phone, and through email trying to get BestBuy to honour "their" advertised warranty. I will buy another drone but based on the customer service I received from DJI it won't be one of theirs. As for BestBuy, I am still trying to get them to honour "their" warranty, so we will see if I remain a customer. If you are new to drones, and do end up buying a DJI, before you do, go online and take as many lessons as you can, and familiarize yourself with firmware updates. The product documentation you get with the drone is minimal and useless.

I have had issues with both. The controller battery won't charge and the response from DJI is slow. ALL consumers that buy DJI drones should insist that there be a Qualified service centre in British Columbia. This should help on some of the delay's. I had to buy a new controller as it would take months to get back in the air. This is NOT a plug, but Candrone in Burnaby are great for service and I hope we can get them to be a licence'd dealer for service. Join the Phantom forums and insist on Local service to help on delay's and having to ship to California.

Problems right out of the box

I purchased my Phantom 4 along with an additional battery. I brought it home and unpacked the drone. Immediately the problems began, both the battery in the drone and the additional battery I purchased had no charge and would not take a charge. Next I went to the controller it did have a minimal charge and when I attached it the charger it began to charge. 7 hours later the controller reached 3 of 4 bars and the charger shut off and will not charge the controller any longer. In an attempt to determine whether the issue was with my charger or controller, I had a friend bring over his phantom 4 and my charger would not charge his batteries. I was able to complete the charging of my controller on his charger. So clearly I have a defective charger as well. Best buy of course due to policy was unwilling to assist me despite me calling them less than an hour after making the purchase. DJI was slightly more helpful but the end result is I've purchased a drone I might get to fly several weeks after purchasing it.

Faulty battery means big disappointment

Everything about the product is impressive. DJI does a great job. The battery charger for the controller worked no problem, very simple. When I tried to charge the Smart Battery — nada. No LED response at all. After three hours, there was not a spark of charge in the thing. You opt to fork out the big bucks for this model, and the excitement is pretty high. "Ready to fly" they claim, except their battery is a dud. Awaiting feedback on replacement parts...

return ONLY if the box is sealed

The only returns allowed are if the box remains sealed. No returns allowed if an open box of refurbished. I had a faulty battery in the box. Best Buy refers you to the manufacturer and DJI refers you back to Best Buy. Now DJI sent a return authorization and they have the battery in California. Still no word that they will replace it. Over 3 weeks so far.....

battery deffective

very disappointed. bought phantom 4 but battery is not charging. check the battery first and unit of course. now i still contacting DJi.

  • from Brantford

Beware of Regulations

Know what you are buying first. The weight of the Pro4 is 1380g. Anything over 1000g requires pilot ground school training to operate. After the package is open Best Buy won't take it back. New regulations in effect levy expensive fines if you are caught using this drone without certification.

The remote controller won't charge

Bad quality control, many consumers experience the remote controller charging issue since the beginning of 2016, and DJI still allow those products to be sold on the market, unbelievable! I bought my Drone last week, charging the controller all night (11 hours), but when I try to fly it in the morning the remote controller turned off because battery low, I did some research online, hundreds of consumers had the same issue, and the worst thing is bestbuy won't exchange or return the drone because "it is opened, call DJI", WHAT? I just send it back to DJI, DJI says it usually takes two weeks before they sent it back. Be careful guys.

Best price for high end consumer drone

Don't buy this if you don't want to learn the ins and outs of it as they do have a bit of a learning curve to all the features, updating firmware, etc. If you want something you can just throw batteries in and go, get something cheaper. If you plan to take amazing photos and video and want to get the very most out of your investment, then this is the drone for you. DJI is the best company in the world for drones right now and is a few steps ahead of the competition. Also you'll want at least one more battery. Lastly, GO READ THE DJI PHANTOM FORUM. There's a ton of useful information there and chances are if you have a problem, someone else has already figured out a solution. P.S. It really isn't a toy, so think before you fly but have fun

Battery Fail

Bought this unit a week before xmas as a gift, but found battery would not charge. Exchanged the entire unit at a different store, got it home, same problem bad battery. After reading all of the posts on the manufacturers forum, realized alot of people are experiencing the same problem. Still no resolution or offer to replace/correct from the manufacturer. This is a defective product and should be removed from the shelves until the battery problem is resolved.

Solid Construction & Incredible Features but Worst EVER Instructions & Support

I waited a few days to do my review and let my anger subside -- so my original rating is now upgraded from a 1 to 3. That's because it took 2 days (about 18 hrs) to get this thing in the air. If Apple is the model company for ease of use and intuitiveness - then this product is the polar opposite. You will enjoy this thing immensely when you get it flying, just be prepared to put in the time and homework beforehand (or set those expectations if it is a gift). Here we go: the box has a "quick set up" guide that won't you anywhere near flight. For example, you have to register the unit online, before flight or for the remote to even talk to the aircraft. But how? what app? mobile app or on a PC/MAC? If a PC, then Windows 10 is not supported, you need the purple flavour of Windows 7 - recommend a burner PC, with the unsigned junk they install and Norton alarms they trip that can't be uninstalled, you'll need to reformat your PC after. With all the pretty packaging - they don't include a printed user manual!! or a link to go get it. So you head to user forums where other burned users won't help because they all spent days piecing together this set up puzzle. Don't even think about turning this thing on until you have downloaded the full manual and read cover to cover (it is written in backward order - the basics are at the back!), If you get that far, you need to upgrade the firmware in the controller and the aircraft - but how? Which controller USB port works for upgrades? with DJ Asst mobile or a PC version? More web searching for clues. How does the upgrade work? Gets stuck at 99% - is it bricked? Almost ready, registered product, upgraded firmware - but needs calibration. (If you fly first time like me without calibration, it will crash as GPS float and compass is off - so buy extra blades). Ok,how to calibrate? More reading, more forums: some is done with PC/MAC software and a computer screen, some done within the mobile app, and some manually by spinning the unit (compass). Finally ready to flight - now what? - aircraft battery is now bricked!!! - Another setback- Return to Best Buy for a replacement (could be something as simple the designers didn't key the polarity of the charger connection! duh) You can google all this stuff "battery bricked" "calibration won't work" "Firmware upgrade stuck at 99%" etc, etc, and see the frustrations that hundreds of other buyers are facing. If you get this far, and haven't given up, then you will be very, very pleased with this machine once you pass through that horrible setup hurdle. If they set expectations on the box "almost ready to fly - requires extensive setup and calibration", I would have given it a 5/5. Occupation: Software Engineer.

Really enjoyable

I hadn't bought myself a toy in a while and I can literally spend hours with this quadcopter!

Lots of fun. Easy to fly

We watched many online reviews before choosing this model and it has lived up to our expectations. It's very easy to fly and takes awesome videos. No crashes yet, despite being passed around through our extended family. The included carry case is a nice touch. There's not much else I can add - just search for some reviews online. Our old iPad 1 was too big to fit in the holder but it works fine with our iPhone and iPad Mini.

This is an extremely user friendly drone. My 9 year old operates it. Flew it the other night in high wind, absolutely stays locked in position in mid air. Watch the Sport mode, gps drops and in the wind , it will push from its initial location, click off sport and the drone lock in position in the air again. picture quality is amazing. a huge hit at the dinner party the other night.

Phantom 4

I have my 9!year old daughter flying this and activating the Active Track. This drone in fantastic and the recording quality amazing . I tried it in a good wind and the camera was perfectly stable .

Great toy

This is a fun machine. Great video. It's not perfect but it is quite stable and if flown with diligence it is very reliable and worth the price

Phantom 4

Works great ,easy to fly, couple weeks later won't calibrate , malfunctions in the computer won't always climb above 40 feet, don't expect help to fix it,

  • from Edmonton AB

Incredible !!!

The best out there !!

  • from Edmonton, AB

Gimbal out of level

I had bought 3 of these drones so far and they all got returned due to faulty gimbal and out of level video, this drone flys great, however has a lesser range than phantom 3 professional, even the controller power output had been decreased. Some may say did you calibrate IMU , yes I did numerous time on a wooden table with a level and the camera horizon is always tilted. Phantom 4 was released prematurely and has a lot of bugs and faulty components. I will wait and see for a new phantom 5 in the future , for now I will be flying my Phantom 3 Pro.

  • from Québec, QC

Drone exceptionnel !!!

Lots of misinformation in these reviews.

This is a great bird but a few things that have been written below are not correct. first it was mentioned that this bird is lighter than the Phantom 3, it is in fact 100grams heavier. Secondly it was mentioned below that the camera was not upgraded from the Phantom 3 Pro. Fact is while the sensor remains the same (same sensor in most 4k platforms inclusive of Yuneec and GoPro) the lens was upgraded to a much better quality lens, I have both the Phantom 3 Pro and the Phantom 4 and the still pictures and video quality are much better in the Phantom 4 thanks to this upgraded lens. Other things to note while you can squeeze 28 minutes of flight (search youtube P4 28min) out of this bird (w/most features disabled) realistically your actual max flight time will be somewhere between 19 and 23 minutes (25 @ sea lvl) with all features enabled. With just over 100 P4 flights I am seeing typical flight times of 18 minutes while landing with ~30% battery remaining, you don't want to deplete the battery lower than 10% for the sake of the battery longevity. I could add much more but I think that this dispels some of the incorrect information here, you can read much more on the [link] community forums or by visiting [link]. Good luck and happy flying!

  • from Toronto, Ontario

P4 Review

@Robert - Your assessment is incorrect, the front sensor will pick up a chain link fence and I think you need to read the specifications. Wind will not carry the unit if you fly with-in the suggested limit of 15 kph (you can go slight higher to 20 to 25 kph, but your battery life will be reduced as it tries to hold its GPS position). If you intend the fly in higher winds I suggest the Inspire.

  • from longueuil

Good drone with nice feature

@Robert, get your fact straight! This drone is heavier that the Phantom 3! Also the weight does not affect how it is carried by the wind, the surface area is has will! Good feature on this drone, I am a little sad that they did not upgrade the camera from last generation but apart from that everything is perfect!

  • from Burlington, ON

Still can be crashed

Most people will follow this new done blindly, the new obstacle ad voidable does not work in sport mode, flying backwards or side to side. It also will not pick up tree branches or chain link fences. It is a joy to fly, but only when flown with respect. This drone can do amazing things but it isn't foolproof. It is lighter than the phantom 3 so the wind carries it easier. Watch all videos and read all the info and help keep the regulations down and respected hobbie. Fly safe
