I've been using both the video and audio Chromecasts for almost 8 months now and love the flexibility. I stream video from my Plex server as well as mirror online videos with no issues. Same goes with my music - either from my local music, whether on my Plex or Pixel XL, and Google Play streams instantly and consistently.
Currently using three Audio casts and three video casting devices plus Google Home.
I use it with my Google Home to get incredible surround sound.
Been searching for weeks at various home electronic and specialty stores. Lost count of how many sales staff told me "it can't be done" "you will have to buy Sonos or Bose". Even had one tell me this specifically tell me the Chromcast Audio would not multi room. So glad I didn't listen, this thing is great, have music to all my old and new speakers all over the hose and we can control it from any of our phones or tables.....love it...Google has a home run here :-)
I bought this to use with multiple non-wireless speakers around the house. Instead of plugging in the chromecast to an outlet I use a cell phone battery pack to make it easier to switch between devices.
Very happy with this device and has great audio quality.
To those who want to cast local content, you DO NOT have to upload to Google and stream. You can cast local content from your device. I have tried several cast-enabled music apps on Android (and AllCast on iPhone) with success. Absolutely no stutters with 320kbps AAC and FLAC. My favourite Android music casting apps are Shuttle Plus / Shuttle Pro which I can't get to play gapless (I have both but can't tell the difference between them) and HiFi Cast which plays gapless.
I purchased it 1 week ago from Bestbuy North York... and seems perfect for my music... i'm using an old speakers and the outcome is so great.. for a perfect audio you need to buy a toslink optical to 3.5mm and believe me you will not regret it.... the digital music will turn you on...so clean, clarity and very clear audio.
Do NOT buy if you want to cast music from a Windows computer software program other than through Google's proprietary "TAB". Example you cannot cast your "desktop" despite what Google says, so if you are trying to cast the audio from a movie you are watching with Windows media player or Cyberlink it will NOT work. The "cast desktop" feature does not work. If anyone doesn't believe me, please do a Google search first and you will see that even with everything updated to the latest versions there are literally hundreds and hundreds of people saying the same thing I am.
If all you want this for is to cast music from a YouTube tab on your Google Chrome browser then sure, buy this, it works for that. But if you want to listen to stored media files from your hard drive, this device only wasted your money.
Plug it in and use the Google Home app from your phone to add it on your home WiFi network. Streaming to it is straight forward, provide the app supports Google Cast. So far so good.
This has been a great purchase - it was easy to setup and once I enabled the high quality audio setting, it's been sounding really great on our main AVR.
Such an annoying piece of tech..always dropped connection, fails setup process.
Perfect for streaming audio to different areas of the house or different sides of rooms. Because it relies on wifi you won't drop out of connection like you would with Bluetooth, also has 0% sound quality loss IF you use an external DAC. Has really good analog output if you don't want the external DAC.
I'm currently using two Chromecast Audio's together with Plex Media server which I have running on a Raspberry Pi 3. The Chromecast does a great job allowing me to stream local flac files up to 24 bit / 96 kHz to two stereo systems. I've also had excellent results using the Chromecast to stream from the Stingray Audio mobile app. I'm currently using it's analog interface with good results but I plan on trying the optical output together with an external DAC in the future. Without a doubt, this is a cost effective way of providing high quality whole home wireless audio.
Although I have chosen to set up a dedicated media server, you can just as easily run Plex on your PC (it's free) in order to cast your local PC files via Google's Chrome browser or by using the Plex mobile app. I believe that there are other servers out there that support the Chromecast but I have only worked with Plex so far.
Thing thing is a beast. I have ceiling speakers in my home and needed something to connect to my receiver so i can have my phone in my pocket and walk around and play music over WiFi (Bluetooth signal is weak). This thing is exactly what i was looking for and i use it everyday. It is a solid device and am using it on an android phone, 2 android tablets, an iPad, and an iPhone. So far it has worked fine with every single device. Note, this is to stream music over your home WiFi to your home Receiver. This is not for streaming video to your TV. Some people do not seem to understand the difference between Google Chromecast and Google Chromecast Audio.
I have recommended this to many family and friends and they all are happy with it. Best Buy's online ordering is great, and i received this within a day of ordering. 5 Star!
If you have Spotify its a must add to your stereo system
After reading some reviews, I was concerned that this wouldn't work with the Sirius app on my Android device because the app doesn't have a cast option. I just had to cast my device and it works like a charm. Sound quality is very good! Setup was simple although I had to reboot my Android phone before it found the Chomecast device after installing. That was an issue with the phone I suspect.
If you want to stream local content then steer clear of itunes (which you should anyways). I use another media program (Plex) which is brilliant and allows casting of local content. All said this is a wonderful product Cast music to wand where you want. Multi room is flawless. Do you have extra gear laying around... then breath new life into it and treat yourself to multi room audio.
I use it with local content through Emby, as well as Netflix and Google Play Music.
Set up was very easy.
To those who say "No Local File Playback" - you can upload your entire MP3 library to Google Play Music for free and play back on Chromecast Audio.
Anyhow, this is a great way to cast music to multiple speakers in your house simultaneously. .
Also an excellent companion to the Google Home - you can tell the Google Home to play a playlist / song / radiostation on all speakers in your house, this jumps in.
I keep adding more of these onto my whole-house audio system. Works fantastic. As for not working with your "local" files. Currently I have uploaded my music to Google Play and stream that way. But in order to play my "local" stored content on my computer - yes you can. I have started using PLEX media server. When using this you can cast your music files stored locally on your computer.
What almost none of the reviews tell you is that it will not work with your local music files. That's right - forget about using it with iTunes on your PC.
Bought one of these and brought it home, only to discover you can't stream local content - So if you have a PC on your home network with all your music on it you can't play from VLC or Windows Media Player to Chromecast Audio.
Major limitation, and it's very strange that this config isn't supported.
So sorry Google Chromecast Audio - I can only give one star, due to this glaring omission.
Does most things expected. Biggest problem is that it wont talk to music stored locally on an apple device. Clearly deliberate. Fix is to download allcast app. But really guys... would you and Apple grow up.... thanks
Waited until I installed the 2nd unit.
They work period. Flawless. Have 2 playing and there is no problem with timing. If you have some existing equipment with line-in then get these little gems. There is no need at all to go buy yet more expensive SONOS (or other brands) speakers.
I purchased two Chromecasts Audio and one Chromecast (video). They all work like a charm now, but first I had to upgrade my Telus router with an Asus one that has better coverage and 5G support, because the 2.4G WiFi was incredibly crowded in our condo (the layout of the unit, connected devices and router position did not help either).
Since the upgrade, I do not have problems to connect to any Chromecast in my unit from any room within seconds and the connection does not drop either.
Grouping Chromecasts Audio works well and streaming is easy from both Android devices and Windows 10 laptop.
This product is definitely worth the money and I believe Google will keep pushing new updates to keep it competitive and compatible with various audio/video services.
I only miss the option to group Chromecast with a Chromecast Audio to stream Netflix picture to TV and audio to separate speakers.
good, soooo goood.
All the people who have given it low ratings because they couldn't set it up should probably not own electronics. My dog could set this up. It works well and pits out perfect sound.
Works wonderfully, simple and easy. One of those products that just works.
One thing that might trip you up if you can't seem to cast from your phone. Turn off caching and then all will be great.
Already have some stereo equipment with audio in. Use this device instead of buying more stereo equipment. For better than waisting big bucks on Sonos.
For those complaining that they can't get Chromecast Audio or Chromecast to work with their router, you need to open up a browser and log into your router (using it's IP - different brands of routers use different ip's to log in) and turn on multicasting.
Nice device to re-use old stereo equipment with poor quality AM/FM
Need Spotify Premium, works with Google Play - Free Version
Requires a stable High-Speed Internet Connection.
I tried to get this to work for days on my Rogers supplied router, including LENGTHY tech support chats with Rogers and Google.
I no longer think it's a good idea for Google to make our self driving cars when they can't build a simple single function device like this.
Went through all the possible fix and still couldn't get it to connect to my wifi router.... Bummer had great reviews!!!
I bought it to stream music (Spotify, iTunes, internet radio) from my PC to my stereo but can not get it to work. The software program will not find the Chromecast unit when loaded on my PC and I can not figure it out. I spent an hour on the phone with a Chromecast tech help guy and he could not figure it out. I am returning it. It works from my phone but you can not stream Spotify to it unless you buy the premium option.
This is a game changer in audio streaming. I use the optical connection through an external DAC and the sound quality is excellent. I cannot comment about the internal DAC quality since I did not use it, but other reviews say it's great so for the price it is amazing.
Easy as pie to use, so many apps use it, and yes if you find the right media player you can stream any file from your phone.
100000x more consistent than the AirPlay/Airport Express is replaced.
The product doesn't' work well with Apple laptop. The sound quality is terrible
Excellent Wireless adapter, but when using Apple device, you can't just stream your music. You have to use an apps which is compaytible as spotify, deezer....
The Chromecast works as expected - plugged into the wall and my old speaker system to allow it to be streamed to. Most popular apps support Chromecast (allowing you to offload the load to the Chromecast instead of your phone/computer), though Spotify requires premium to do so. For apps that don't, you can stream your entire phone's audio output to the Chromecast.
Please keep in mind that to set up the Chromecast initially requires your phone's location services to be on.
I can't make google Music Play to play SD card stored songs to ChromeCast Audio, you have to upload songs to Google clouds so it can play them. Later I found out it is a limit imposed by Google.
Fortunately I bought AirAudio app before and it supports ChromeCast as well as other casting protocols. It saves my day and everything works out.
I have a JBL Charge bluetooth speaker (which also has an AUX input). Love it's sound, but had been pairing to my mobile, so if a text or other notification came it would interrupt the music I was listening to. Now with CC Audio, I just plugged into aux port and powered up; discovered device with CC app on phone, and opened Google Play Music. Started a list and as soon as music was coming through speaker, my phone no longer part of the connection that sent the sound to the speaker. I could have my phone in my pocket and music would play even if I was across street at my neighbour's yard. Music coming from speaker now not limited to the range of the BT connection - instead connected directly to my home wifi network.
I ended up buying 3 Chromecast audio for different rooms in our house. Setup was simple with the Chromecast app. While I didn't run A/B tests to compare audio quality, it certainly seems to be very good. I find Chromecast Audio to be robust so far and can almost always "cast" my music robustly. This is in contrast to the Airport Express (from Apple, using Airplay) I was previously using which was less reliable. I also like the fact that I can stream to multiple rooms at the same time. I'm very, very, happy with this product.
Plugged it in, I called to toll free number to walk me through the installation. Everything went like a breeze.
I am connected through the digital output to the digital input of my MSB DAC. The sound is awesome!!
It's not for everyone, but if you have some old speakers lying around this is definitely worth a look.
Took about 20 seconds to plug everything in and then start up the chromecast app, set up after opening the app took another minute. Super easy, no hassle, couldn't be any easier. Works really well with cast ready apps.
This did do what I wanted, but there were a couple of funny things about the way it works. Connecting to my home wifi was straightforward, but I thought I would be able to stream the music already on my phone. Instead, I had to install Google Play Music, and Music Manager to upload music to online storage, and it is played from there. I realized this is necessary to not drain your phone battery, as promised in the marketing. The upload process worked well -- it was easy to select my iTunes library and it got all playlists, etc. It was also fairly fast because they don't actually upload music that already exists on their servers.
The app is not the most intuitive to navigate, but it's okay. It does annoy a bit with ads and trying to push you into subscribing. But volume control... couldn't see one anywhere, finally used the volume buttons on the side of the phone itself to bring up a volume control in the app. Okay, but how about one already on-screen in the app also? Lots of comments online complaining about that. Volume changes also make an annoying "popping" noise on my phone for each step, which is played through the speakers. Probably a way around that, but I haven't bothered.
In the end, it works reasonably well and it is very convenient to be able to skip songs, adjust volume etc from anywhere around the house. I haven't had any issues with dropping sound, everything plays smoothly.
This was originally going to be maybe a three- or four-star review because I didn't like the sound from the Chromecast Audio through my Bose Wave as much as I liked my old Logitech Music Anywhere system. Then another reviewer mentioned the "full dynamic range" setting in the Chromecast app, and bam!
The Chromecast is definitely a good investment for me. The Logitech system I had before was a couple hundred bux back in the day, and was plagued with signal loss and pairing problems. With the Chromecast, I'm getting smooth sound and, with a few good apps, some ridiculously easy access to my media library.
I was simply looking for a lower cost alternative to Sirius which allowed me better control over programming (I'm not particularly fond of Sirius on their programming). This was an inexpensive way to get there with Spotify (premium) and I'm fairly happy with the way it works. Admittedly, sound quality was not a big issue for me as I'm half deaf and it's for my workshop anyway.
The setup was very frustrating. One would think if they were going to sell a product in great quantity they would want to make it easy to use. I had to pretty much stab in the dark, searching the web for a way to get this setup. I did find a youtube site that gave me the missing pieces. Why the heck they didn't provide a good, well written, complete, step by step set of instructions for how to get this going is beyond me.
Now that it's FINALLY working (no thanks to Google) I'm fairly happy with it.
I ought two to link my speakers in different rooms, all works excpet there is a lag in sound while connected to Bose, and I guess it has something to do with Bose considering there was no sound lag by connecting with other speakers such as Harmen kardon and Logitech Z960.
WfFi is away stabel than bluetooth connectivity, all good, my only wish is that in the future, this Chromecast can be built in for the name brand speakers. and I will bring to Shanghai to check if this device works there or not. Chromast generation one did not.
It's complicated. I love that I can stream from my various devices to my stereo. I'm sad that the Soundcloud app and the Apple music app don't stream to it. It's freed up my computer from not always being connected to the stereo, but I can't use volume controls from my laptop. I can't stream music from itunes on my laptop , but I can stream music from websites.
It's given me some freedom and added a few frustrations. But it's cheap ;-)
The chromecast device is great when I can get it to work. Having a multi-room setup for just [price] is pretty awesome, but I've had a miserable time maintaining the stability of audio network. The chromecast devices will show up on my network and appear to be working, but will drop out or not connect even though my wifi signal is strong. The whole process has been an endless headache and I have finally given up on using the multi-room functionality. I think the problem is my network (large home using range extender), but it's hard to know. I would be somewhat wary of these devices if you want to set up an audio network that relies on range extenders.
These audio Chromecasts are a great addition to our home audio system. By linking via wifi, we can run our music through multiple speaker systems in 2 different areas of our home. Because it is not bluetooth, if I get a notification sound etc on my device, it doesn't affect the music playing through the independent wifi system.
The only wish I would have it so have a built in rechargeable battery, so these could power themselves and be used in more remote location, independent of a power source. Would be 5 stars if that were a possibility.
