This fridge looks great, has lots of great features. But it also fails. Parts fail- especially the compressor. That's when the fun starts. They jealously guard their parts, so even if you use one of their approved servicemen, there will be a delay of a few days between when they first come out and when they actually fix it. If you do not use the LG service, then you will have to pay for any parts still under warranty yourself (to your service company of choice) and then fight with LG to get your money back. You will lose. Prepare to wait a week for repairs while your food spoils and your kitchen is basically out of commission. And you will have the luxury of working out the details with people who barely speak English. I regret this purchase now. When I bought it, all I saw were high five reviews. In 18 months since, the icemaker failed and was replaced and now the compressor failed and my 90 dollar beer fridge (that has been working just fine for 12 years) is doing yeoman's service. If they keep to their word they will fix it next week. Now I can find literally hundreds of stories identical to mine. My week of delay is actually not unreasonable- most people wait much longer. Even in a perfect world they need a minumum of 48 hours to respond. If you need to rely on your appliance, and need swift action should it fail, spend your money on something else.

Great Fridge

We had an Amana that came with the house, a product of the previous owner's kitchen renovation. There was an icemaker in this old fridge and the ice it churned out tasted like garlic and was only useful if you were making ceasars. When the compressor started making strange noises, we knew we needed to start looking before it cratered. Water dispensing and ice-making were high on our priority list. Also important was a decent filtration system- to prevent the problem of funny tasting ice we had in our old fridge. There are a lot of fridges that can make ice and dispense water, but most of them cost you some internal storage space. Not so with this fridge. The ice is stored in the door, with room enough for some narrow shelves behind it perfect for pop and beer. The first day we plugged it in the ice maker too a while to build up enough to keep up with demand, but by the second day in we had enough ice never to worry about it again. The filtration system is basically activated carbon, which removes a lot of organic impurities as well as some heavy metals- its listed by NSF and has a breakdown of what contaminants it handles. Its about as good as you can get without RO, but RO does NOT remove chloramines and wastes water as permeate. Both the water and the ice taste noticeably better (taste less?) than Edmonton tap water. The freezer is nice, bottom pull out so you can get at most everything even when it is loaded up. It has plenty of storage space and a secondary drawer where you can put quick grabs like popsicles or leftovers. The regular fridge part is awesome. The door in door lets you store the 4 gallon milk jugs and butter and other quick grab items, and the shelves are strong enough to hold a full milk jug with no worries. The inside compartment has a handy snack drawer, lots of shelf space and a nice clean white light that is bright and shows true colours. There is a carbon air filter too, so odors are almost non-existent. It does cost more than some others, but the fact is that every member of the family uses this appliance several times a day. Since any fridge also makes up a large part of the kitchenscape. it was also important to get something nice looking. The compressor is very quiet- it is also state of the art and very energy efficient. The only drawback I noticed is that the water, while filtered, is not refrigerated and will be the same temperature as your supply line. But you have ice to offset that if it gets a little warm, so it doesn't really matter. If you're ready to get what you pay for, this is a great buy. We had the delivery/takeaway service as well, and this went smoothly- they actually showed up when they said they would and were very efficient.
