More Information

Take first-rate pictures
  • The 20.1MP Exmor R APS-C HD CMOS sensor brings out the beauty in even the simplest things. It delivers incredible detail and low noise, so you can capture the fine texture of a butterfly's wings as it rests gracefully on a nearby shrub.
  • The APS-C sensor size, the same sensor format found in Sony's full-sized Alpha DSLR camera lines, combines high resolution, high sensitivity, and dramatic blurred backgrounds. Now you have a reason to stop and smell the roses with a camera that gives you the flexibility to endow even the simplest shots with your personal artistic touch.
  • Bionz X processor works seamlessly with the sensor to produce crisp still images with area-specific noise reduction, true colour rendering, and low noise. Infuse your butterfly photo with a sense of vibrant realism, and capture what your eye perceives, highlighting the subtle beauty of the delicate, brightly patterned scales.
  • Don't let the fading light deter you from appreciating what nature has to offer. High-sensitivity ISO 100-16000 captures beautifully in low light, limiting the noise so every exquisite and vibrant detail pops out. And when you need it, the built-in pop-up flash gives you an extra burst of light for great photos in dim situations.
  • The included 16-50mm E-mount retractable Power Zoom lens is small and compact, barely protruding from the front of your camera so you can still slide your a5000 in your jacket pocket with the lens attached. It features ED and aspherical elements for reliably sharp and detailed images well suited to everyday shooting.
  • Capture the sights and sounds of a lively soccer game on the park's wide, open field. Record Full HD videos in your choice of fast 60i for smooth action scenes, or slower 24p frames per second for a traditional, cinematic effect.
  • AVCHD codec lets you record beautiful Blu-ray picture quality, while the computer-friendly MP4 codec makes it easy to compress your files and upload to the web. This way you can fully appreciate your recording finesse displayed in Blu-ray quality on a monitor or big-screen TV, or post directly on Facebook for instant updates to your social network.
Bring it anywhere
  • Strike a pose with a view of the park in the background, thanks to a tiltable 3-inch 460K-dot LCD screen. It flips upwards up to 180 degrees so you can indulge in perfectly framed selfies or low-angle shots, and change your view on a whim.
  • Hold on to your latte with one hand, while fine-tuning your frame with the other. With its perforated, nicely textured grip, and easy zoom lever, this camera is great for one-handed use. Quickly snap a shot of a black-capped chickadee that came into view, perched on a low-hanging branch.
  • You'll have no trouble carrying this compact camera around. Lightweight at about 300 grams with battery and SD card, it'll sit comfortably in your purse or backpack.
Share your highlights
  • Wireless file transfers and one-touch pairing with a compatible mobile device are easy with WiFi and NFC connectivity. Sony's PlayMemories Mobile app lets you touch your camera to an Android smartphone or tablet, and create an instant connection through NFC for sharing, remote control, and basic editing.
  • Make the most of serendipity, and take several shots of nature's winged creatures before they take flight. Sony's lithium-ion rechargeable NP-FW50 battery lasts up to 420 shots on a single charge. The innovative InfoLITHIUM battery system lets you see the power percentage remaining so you can shoot with confidence.

The camera worked marvelously for about two months and then the SD slot would no longer read the SD card. Lens is fine, but the body is useless now without being able to read the SD card.

Camera is great, geek squad... not so much

Despite being Geek Squad certified, my box came with a mismatched strap that was too wide for the camera's strap loops, and a missing AC adapter. The camera itself is in perfect condition, and works wonderfully... but it would be nice to receive this product in it's entirety.

Disappointed with Open Box

First time purchasing an open box product. Camera was defective upon arrival. Store was unable to exchange item.

  • from Moncton

Geek squad approved product was broken

Very disappointed in the service received with this camera. It was shipped to me broken, as the lens was not recognized by the camera. I was told that the lens was broken when I brought it in store and that they can refund the product to me. I don't understand how it was approved by geek squad as a functional product when it obviously doesn't work as soon as the camera is turned on. I was told to wait that there are more open box products in stock but I wouldn't buy open box again!!

Good camera

I am happy with this recent purchase although I am still observing if it is really what I need. I make youtube videos so I am picky with my camera. I have a nikon dslr but I decided to get this because of the flip up screen. If you get the right setting the quality of the videos is nice, as well as the pictures. The battery life is short . It also shuts off tells if internal temperature is getting high after 20-30 of filming which is annoying. Autofocus is good and it creates a blurry background just with the lens that came with it. It makes hd videos which is really really amazing. I am still debating though if I change this to another camera. But overall it is a good beginner camera.

Customer service is not their strong suit!

Camera is great, I love it! The price was unbeatable! The issues I had ordering were horrible, the customer service was a flat out joke, and because of the way I was treated I will NEVER buy anything from best buy again...Even if the price is right.

Liked it

I liked the camera. It is my first camera that I use other than my phone camera. I use it for Instagram and so far worked pretty well. The only thing that I don't like is, it doesn't connect with my phone. I can't transfer photos to my phone sadly.

Possible Scam

Best Buy reports that they had a supply issue with this Camera and as such is unable to honor the advertised price (purchased by customers prior to being listed Out of Stock). Anyone looking to place an order on a sale item should exercise caution or at the very least don't rely on Best buy to honor the offer! Best of luck!

Order cancelled, no notification given

I ordered this camera and my order was cancelled. No notification or reason was given. Very disappointed as I got a great deal on it and have already ordered accessories.

Compact but not as good as DSLR

It is very compact which is huge plus but I didn't find quality as good as DSLR.

Meets my needs

Since I am new to photography, this camera was perfect for close up pictures and vlogging.

excellent image quality but really limited functionality

This camera is excellent for the price . The problem is at night the lcd panel is a pixelated noise fest . If you are using it for daytime it's hard to get a better deal for a small high res camera . It's really good but not amazing . It feels like a toy opposed to a tool.

Great Camera Overall

Shutter speed is a little slow, but has some great features and capabilities. Certainly an improvement to what I have now.

Good Product

Part of my weekly routines at work require me to snap and publish LOTS of photos, including many action shots, sporting events, etc, so I am very well versed in what makes a good camera, but I also still have the perspective of someone who simply wants a good shot. I believe this review should help 'non-pros who want to shoot like pros' because of that perspective. I have owned three of these cameras, and, first off, they are all consistent - no duds; they all work the same. In comparison to the four DSLRs I own, I consider the A5000 a disappointment. In no way can this camera match the 'virtually pro' shots that I can get with any of my mid range DSLRs. It takes good photos, but I can accomplish far more 'wow factor' photos with those. However, in comparison to the probably 20 point and shoot cameras I've owned, this thing crushes that competition - vastly superior quality, and way quicker to focus -also a much higher burst rate for things like sporting. I took this to a stadium concert, and it was small enough that they let me bring it in - shots from mid floor, flash off, were easy to take and generally very clear. Now, none of them had the colour depth that I can capture with my DSLRs, nor were any 'incredibly detailed', but they were nonetheless 'clear' - good enough to keep photos. I've never gotten concert shots that good with any phone or point and shoot camera. I took this to an outdoor soccer game, and there I was disappointed. Here, in perfect outdoor lighting, I just couldn't match the incredible shots I normally get with DSLRs. Summary: So,,, here's the rundown: This camera is excellent for the money, but I rarely can get it to do what a higher end DSLR can. I bought it because there are times I just want something smaller than the DSLR, and all I really need is photos that are 'clear enough so I can use them'; for that, it's fantastic. Clear, focused shots - yes. WOW, amazing shots compared to DSLRs, not really. But, at this price, it's a very good machine.

High hopes did not come true ...

Pros: -Compact design -Biggest sensor in its class -180 flip screen -Lots of adjustable settings while filming -Price Cons: -Overheats and shuts down when filming (something all mirrorless and DSLR camera appear to be struggling with but no one tells you before selling it to you) -Manual focus is awefull -Auto focus is very moody -Limited lens zoom range -No touch screen We thought this camera would fulfill all our needs but it became very apparent that you cannot use this as a video camera. A short little 5 minute shot is no problem, but don't try recording your kids theatre show or several shots for a vlog, unless you want to wait 10 minutes every time it shuts down - only to overheat after 10 minutes recording again and again! The video quality is absolutely perfect but there are no tricks around it: These just overheat and die on you. This camera has three (yes 3!) ways of zooming but no designated way to quickly and accurately focus. Really takes the joy out of trying a nice macro shot. Will be returning it tomorrow

Love it!

If you are a beginner photographer, or just looking for a small lightweight camera for a reasonable price, this camera is for you. I read tons of reviews before purchasing this camera. As soon as I got it home I knew that I had made the right choice. Great picture quality, easy to use and tons of fun features including wifi capabilities. So fun! I absolutely love this camera.

First time buying Open Box - did not disappoint!

I was looking for a mirrorless camera to take travelling with me because lugging around my DSLR is simply not convenient. Great price for a great, small camera. I'm very pleased with the image quality and the selfie function (whether you like it or not) produces fantastic photos. As others have complained, the LCD screen is rather grainy so I do miss the viewfinder. It's not a deal breaker, though.

Open Box - Not a Problem

The Camera was just as described. No surprises, first time for buying an open box product, would do it again.

Lot of features for the price.

I own several DSLR and just wanted a lightweight camera for backpacking/travel. One that still gave me flexibility with my shots. I got exactly that for the price of a decent point and shoot. These aren't really complaints as they are observations. Most of these features are addressed with the higher model A6000. Being my backup camera, I opted for the A5000 to keep cost minimal. LCD is pretty low resolution and noisy in live view. This makes me wish there is a viewfinder. I have 10 year old cameras that have sharper display. Preview mode is slightly better but I just review it on my phone with the built in wifi. Menu is easy to use. Buttons well placed. However, I wish that they would have more than one dedicated customizable button. I have mine set to quickly switch manual/auto focus. Don't know why this button wasn't on the lens itself. Body is really light but lens is heavy so it feels very unbalance. I feel like I might drop it holding one handed without securing strap. You get what you pay for and in this case, it's a good bang for your buck, takes quality pics and plenty of features to give you creative control!
