Video gone in 3 months

This was a "decent" unit when i worked. Sound was ok, nothing exceptional. The menu is bloated however... they really need to simplify. My major complaint is that the video stopped working after 3 months. This was not a major deal to me, as I am accustomed to places like Best Buy, simply exchanging them. Guess what? no dice. Best Buy does NOT back up their products. They told me I had to deal with Sony now, and work at getting it fixed. AFTER 3 months??? are you kidding me? A. Last time I buy anything Sony B. Last time I shop Best Buy.

What about Phono?

I bought this and all components by phone on the recommendation of a Best Buy sales rep in the Kingston, ON store. I was told it would meet my needs which I explained were to hook up 2 speakers, a CD player, and a record player to play my old vinyls. I took it to my local electronics shop as I couldn't see how to hook up the Sony record player, only to be told by the expert that it is made for surround sound basically and while I can attach a CD/DVD player, there are no jacks to allow phono hookup!

Plenty of technology for the money

This receiver is a great addition to my entertainment system for the money. I had the previous model for a few years now. The main reason I bought the newer version is for the HDMI ports. I used allot less cables to connect all my components and I have more better control and better sound with allot less effort. The only negative points I can think of are that I don't have enough control over the sound and it does not have WiFi. To overcome the WiFi problem all I had to do was install a Bluetooth audio receiver. It works great for my phone and my turn table.

Problems working with XBox One S

The receiver seems like its mostly a good unit, unfortunately its not entirely compatible with the 4K output of the XBox. It passes the video through to the TV ok, but EVERY time you touch the volume, the receiver blanks the picture out to change the resolution to 480p to display the on-screen volume level, then eventually that disappears and the correct 4k picture is back. Seems like they forgot to test 4K on it before releasing and claiming it supports it. No firmware upgrade available to fix this either. Stay away if you want to use with 4k.

Great product for the price

If you do not need Bluetooth or Networking capabilities then this is a great receiver for the price. I suspect that is what reduces the cost. I simply connected an iPone6 to the front or the receiver via the standard USB cable that comes with your iPhone. Works great! Warm rich sound running on Klipsh speakers. Easy speaker setup with the included mic. Easy setup for the other devices (BlueRay, SAT TV, Game). I tried a few other receivers before I settled on this one.

Works great!

Love this receiver. This is the first receiver I have bought and also first time setting up a home theatre system. A little complicated the first time but when set up it's awesome. Gets nice and loud! Would recommend and best price anywhere. Buy it!

Great Value

This system has great value for the price. I have experienced one issue thus far. My PS4 was set to output sound through my wireless head phones and my head phones were turned off. This created a situation where the receiver thought there was no output device turned on and would auto-shut off itself after 10 minutes.

I've owned many Sony amplifiers and have always been impressed by the quality. My only complaints with this unit are that there doesn't seem to be any way to set radio presets without using the on-screen function without a TV (and I do not currently have this hooked to a home theatre system) and there doesn't seem to be enough bass produced (no separate bass or treble adjustment). Plus, there was no manual included in the box.

Monitor Limitation

Great system, high quality sound and control, easy to use, good value. The on screen monitor requires an HDMI connection that does not seem to work with other non HDMI inputs.

Overall it's a good buy!

The only issue is the power is a little bit limited sometimes it causes cut off for protection when the volume is loud. Anything else is perfect, great value for the price!

Good entry level value

I upgraded from it's older predecessor that was 8 years old. I got this on sale for [price]. I'm very happy with this entry level unit. I didn't want anything flashy or with too many features, I just wanted a simple receiver that supported uncompressed 5.1, that I could use to play Blu-Rays movies, and games on my Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U. Sound quality is good, super easy setup, good enough inputs, easy enough for my kids to use. I recommend.

Great Value

This receiver has everything needed for a regular home (non studio) movie TV and music watching and listening. For that price it is a steal. My only negative comment is about the user guide which has such a user unfriendly format

Recommended for Novice Home Theatre Owners

I know nothing about setting up a home theatre but the quick start guide provided helped me immensely. I purchased this because the connections on the back looked less advanced than what I had on a Pioneer and I was able to hook it all up on my own and let this perform it's own calibration without any issues.

A Very Basic Receiver with Audio Punch

Extremely happy with this receiver, has better sound quality then my old pioneer. This is a very basic unit with no extra features but the sound quality is top notch. My main complaint is that I need to use component video jack and could not get the video feed to appear. I did little research this unit will only accept a 480i component video signal. I loved the sound quality so much that I just ran the video to the tv. I would recommend this unit to the budget shopper who still wants superior sound just make sure to use 6-16 gauge speaker wires!!!!

It's going back!

Very disappointed with this receiver. Its not very intuitive but more importantly, the sound quality is really lacking. After 2 says of playing with various settings, the sound is just, well, cheap. It sounds thin and tinny. It comes no where near close to measuring up to the Pioneer receiver it replaced. It's going back to be replaced with a Pioneer.

Great basic receiver / amplifier

I replaced a malfunctioning Pioneer receiver with the Sony STRDH550 and have no regrets. The Digital Cinema Automatic Calibration feature seems to work well and sound is good from my normal listening location. I really like the HDMI switching features and the audio return channel functionality which was not on my old receiver. This has greatly simplified the audio controls for TV and stereo speakers - one volume control for both devices. A nice feature is the passthrough of the HDMI signal while in standby/ off such that I can watch TV with the TV sound without turning on the receiver. The menu system looks a little dated but it is functional and fairly easy to use. I am looking forward to many years of great sound from this product.

Just bought this receiver to replace a 15 year old (high end at the time) Sony receiver. Wow. What a difference. This receiver was painless to setup and the speaker calibration was quick and easy. Immediately noticed a huge difference. No fancy features like blue tooth but provides great sound and plenty of power to spare. Would recommend!!

Great unit!!!

I got it today and this receiver has very clear, crispy and succulent sound, Very easy setup, I'd like to recommend one thing you need to do re-setup your speakers distance!!! you gonna get very proportional sound from this receiver. I totally like it. Also it is very successful in 4K resolving.

Important detail to know

For the price, this is a very good receiver if you are not looking for a basic model. There are just a couple of problems with it: - the buttons on the front are all small, black and not illuminated. trying to read what each of them do is almost impossible - but the biggest problem is its sound pass-thru feature. I have a Sharp Aqua TV and when I try to watch TV without turning on the receiver, my TV complains that it cant recognize the sound. I have to run off and turn on the TV box to have this solved. I guess this somehow resets the sound signal that the receiver sends to the TV, making it work. Very annoying.
