Disappointed: No LED light to know when the unit is on-OR- when to disconnect

Purchased this unit not even a week ago. Already own one WD My Book external hard drive (3 TB, former desktop version, with LED light), but prefer that each household member have their own ext. hard drive. When I first plugged it in, and didn’t see a light go on, I thought the unit was defective. Until closer inspection, when I noticed that there was no LED light indicator nor was there an on-screen indicator to know when it’s safe to disconnect the unit. So I went to WD website and noticed ‘a lot’ of other people were also disappointed. The unit also does not sound the same. Not sure if this is an improvement or that it’s just manufactured with cheap components. In hindsight, a USB flash drive might have been a better choice. I specifically wanted WD due to the brand name but maybe, if enough people don’t buy this product, possibly WD will bring this feature back. I have returned this product to Best Buy and until an improvement is made, I’m holding off. This unit does not deserve a star, but BB review process requires I give it at least one.

Sooo Slow

I purchased the 4 TB version. I have been disappointed ever since Western Digital switched to the Blue series drives, from the Green Series. I was excited to see a new version of the My Book in a Green box, thinking it meant a return to the Green Series. For compatability sake from things I have read, I reformatted to NTSF rather than risk using exFAT. The speed is terrible, possibly worse than the previous Blue Series My Book drives. I only get around speeds of 25 MB/sec and yes my computer has USB 3.0 and I use USB 3.0 cables, and have tried spare cables. The drives are just poorly designed. They make snails climbing up the side of a wall like race car drivers. Do yourself a favour and look for a better external drive.

Bought the My Book to back up My Cloud. The two devices would not communicate out of the box without formatting the My Book from exFAT to NTFS. so much for plug and play for devices from the same manufacturer. Claimed transfer speed of 480 mbps is a joke. Best speed attained is 650 only kbps. Don't buy this drive if you have a lot of data to transfer and speed is important. I like the WD My Cloud but the My Book is a piece of junk.
