LEGO Buying Guide

With LEGO, the creative possibilities are endless and so is the fun! Whether you want to use the force in LEGO Star Wars, defend the world of NINJAGO, or play some exciting LEGO games, all you have to do is let your imagination run free.

LEGO is a name renowned for the little plastic bricks that encourage big imaginations. Their products are designed to develop a child’s creativity while also being lots of fun to play with. There is no limit to what can be done when you stack these bricks together, making them ideal for everything from simple structures like tiny houses to life-size sculptures of famous landmarks. It’s this ability to create virtually anything that makes LEGO a huge hit with grown-ups as well. Read on to find out more about this popular toy company.

LEGO History 101

LEGO is one of the leading manufacturers of play materials and strives to create products that build imagination and encourage play. Here are some fun facts you may not have known about this company

  • The LEGO Group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen. He was a carpenter, which means the company actually started out making wooden toys – not plastic ones!
  • The company was born in Billund, Denmark and the name "Lego" is actually an abbreviation of two Danish words, les godt, which mean "play well."
  • It was in 1949 that LEGO first produced its infamous interlocking plastic bricks; however, it wasn’t until 1958 that the LEGO brick as we know it today was developed.
  • Despite the vast assortment of current LEGO products, the bricks from 1958 can still be used with most of today’s LEGO bricks.

Age is More than Just a Number

In order to deliver the best products possible, LEGO does extensive research to better understand children’s development and what their needs are at each stage of their lives. This expertise enables them to create toys that engage children at every age level so they can help them properly build their creativity and imagination.

While there are no set rules around what age you have to be to start (or stop) playing with LEGO, here is more insight into how the company tailors their products to your child’s development:

0 -2 years old

These little ones are just starting to understand their world and play is the primary way that they explore and learn. LEGO created its DUPLO line to be twice as large as standard LEGO bricks in order to accommodate curious little hands. These larger bricks can help develop your child’s fine motor skills, introduce them to shapes and colours, and jumpstart their imaginations.

2-4 years old

At this age, toddlers are starting to develop their social skills and play with other children. LEGO sets for this age group tend to be more colourful and encourage them to role play and make up their own stories. Themed LEGO DUPLO sets, like Princess and Town, introduce them to familiar characters while helping them make sense of their feelings and the world.

4-6 years old

As children get older, their concentration and fine motor control abilities improve. These kids engage in even more intricate fantasy play as they learn more about their world. To continue encouraging their budding imaginations, LEGO sets with fantastic role-playing possibilities, like LEGO City, LEGO Hero Factory, LEGO Bricks & More, and LEGO Cars, are recommended.

6+ years old

These big kids are more logical and eager to try out more challenging physical theories and advanced concepts. LEGO Technic and LEGO Creator sets come with gears, axles, and even electric motors, which allow them to build complex models like robots and movable vehicles.

Not Just for Kids – Adults

The great thing about LEGO is that you’re never too old to play and create with these tiny bricks. There are many sets – such as LEGO Games and LEGO Star Wars – that are complex enough to challenge the advanced minds of grown-ups, so they never feel like they’re building with a children’s toy. These big kids may even challenge themselves further by mixing parts from different sets together or customizing LEGO parts to create incredible sculptures of all shapes and sizes.

Unleash your Creativity

There is no limit to what you can do with LEGO once you enter this little brick world. The simple concept of stacking together interlocking plastic bricks has enabled kids, teenagers, and adults to create everything from simple structures that make play time more fun to fantastic sculptures that defy what you thought was possible.

Every LEGO set comes with inspiration to help you get started creating, but you also have total freedom to build virtually anything you want. You can create moving robots, scale models of your favourite cartoon characters, and a sprawling city that looks just like the one you live in. When it comes to LEGO, all you have to do is imagine something and then make them a reality, brick by brick.
