If you recently watched a Hollywood blockbuster movie in a theatre equipped with the latest audio technology, you might have noticed that the sound effects seemed to be more intense and powerful than before. Thanks to Dolby Atmos, movies can be accompanied by audio that not only comes to life all around you, but above your head as well.

The Dolby Atmos audio standard is now available for home theatre setups so you can bring this incredible sound experience into your living room. Read on to find out how Dolby Atmos can take your home theatre enjoyment to a whole new level.

What is Dolby Atmos?

Simply put, Dolby Atmos is an audio technology standard that allows media makers to create sound "objects" in 3-dimensional space. When you're watching an action movie and a helicopter goes roaring by overhead, a Dolby Atmos surround sound system makes it sound like there actually is a chopper flying right over your head. By creating an additional dimension of height, Dolby Atmos makes your entertainment sound more realistic than ever before.

How do I create a Dolby Atmos home theatre system?

The first thing you'll need is a receiver that's compatible with this new audio standard. These Dolby Atmos receivers are able to decode the audio signal and split it up among the speakers to create the amazing 3D sound.

You'll also need a surround sound system equipped with at least 2 Dolby Atmos-compatible speakers that are either embedded in the ceiling or can be mounted on top of the forward speakers so they can shoot audio upwards and bounce it off the ceiling. If you already have surround sound speakers you might be able to add the ceiling or upwards-firing speakers to complete the system.

Finally, you'll want to get your hands on some Dolby Atmos-optimized content. Chances are the Blu-ray player you already own should be able to play discs with Dolby Atmos-encoded entertainment. You can also get Dolby Atmos content through some streaming services like Netflix, and more sources will be available soon.
