What is the difference between gas and electric dryers and which should I buy?
Electric dryers
If you're on a budget and want a low-maintenance drying solution, opt for an electric dryer. Electric dryers use electricity to heat the air inside the dryer and need to be plugged into a 240-volt outlet. Most laundry rooms include a dedicated 240-volt circuit so you most likely won't need to pay for costly installations. Electric dryers also generally cost less than gas models.
Gas dryers
A gas dryer is ideal if you want to make a sound long-term laundry appliance investment. Gas dryers use natural gas or propane as a heat source. As a result, they are extremely efficient, better for the environment, and help cut the cost of your utility bills over time. The only downside is that they require a dedicated gas hookup to work, which laundry rooms are less likely to have.
What do I need to consider when shopping for a dryer?
Size
Before you start shopping around, you'll need to find out how much space you can give your new dryer. Washers and dryers needs at least 1 inch of space between each other for proper air circulation and 6 inches of depth to accommodate dryer vents and hookups.
Capacity
Standard dryers typically range from about 5.8 cubic feet to 8.3 cubic feet. The general rule of thumb is that the capacity of your dryer should be approximately twice the capacity of your washer. This gives your full load of wet clothing enough space to dry efficiently.
Design and aesthetics
Make sure your dryer complements your home décor. Today, you can find dryers that come in a variety of colours and different designs. Some models feature top doors that open vertically so you don't have to bend over to retrieve your clothing. Others have side swing doors to give you closer access to the interior so you don't miss that lingering sock.

Energy efficiency
Don't want to pay expensive power bills? Find a dryer that's energy efficient. Every dryer has an EnerGuide rating which tells you how much energy it consumes. The lower the number, the less energy it uses. You could also find an ENERGY STAR-qualified model that uses less energy without sacrificing performance.
Moisture sensor
Moisture sensors measure the moisture levels in your load and automatically shut the dryer off when it senses your clothes are dry. This feature ensures you don't waste unnecessary energy and stops your clothes from over drying.
Quiet operation
If you live in a small space or plan to put your dryer near a frequently used room, chances are you won't want to be disturbed by the rumbling of a dryer. Some dryers include sound-dampening insulation pads that can help reduce noise.
Other features to consider
Not in the mood to iron out wrinkles? Find a model that comes with a steam cycle and dryer rack. Steam cycles prevent your clothes from wrinkling, while a dryer rack secures your delicate garments so they don't get caught in the harsh tumble. A drum light lets you easily see everything inside your dryer, making it another great feature to consider.
