A Quick Look at Cell Phone Memory Cards

The more photos you snap and the more songs you add to your phone, the more space you’ll need for it all. An external memory card will give you even more room to store hundreds—sometimes thousands—of your favourite files.

Cell phones accept microSD memory cards, and have dedicated slots for them. Slide one in and you can add it as an extension of your phone’s internal storage, or as an external memory source you can use to store your photos and video.

These pint-sized cards come with full-size adapters, letting you easily transfer content to your computer or other compatible devices.

Storage Sizes

They aren’t getting any bigger, but microSD cards are squeezing in more storage than they ever did before. If you only need a small boost, cards as low as 16GB are a good start. If you need a major boost, cards offering 128GB or 256GB of storage can be handy.

Most modern phones can support cards up to 256GB, giving you the freedom to decide how much extra space you want to expand your storage. Take note of what your phone supports so you can make sure to use the proper-sized card.

Class and Speed

Some memory cards are classified by a speed rating between 2, 4, 6 and 10. Class 10 is the highest, and designed for HD video recording. But there are also Ultra High Speed (UHS) cards rated at either 1 or 3.

These speeds were primarily made for shooting with digital cameras. If you’re looking to use a fast card for shooting on your cell phone, you don’t necessarily have to go with the highest number. Go with the one that fits best with your needs.

Standard and Extra Capacity

As memory cards grew, their classifications changed to reflect the sizing. Standard Capacity (SC) goes up to 2GB. SD High Capacity (SDHC) goes up to 32GB. SD Extended Capacity (SDXC) can go all the way up to 2TB.

Newer cell phones support any one of these, so don’t worry about that as much as you would the amount of storage you need.
