What are Dashcams, and why do you need one?

Dashcams are small, feature-rich, car cameras that provide a great way for drivers to protect their vehicles against a variety of different problems and issues that may arise both while driving and while parked. This is because dashcams record everything that takes place while you’re driving, and many models can also be triggered by movements and bumps to record while the vehicle is parked and unattended.

Dash cameras are usually mounted to the vehicle’s windshield, though there are also rear-facing models that may be mounted in another location—or even on the outside of the vehicle. If you own your own vehicle and wish to have video evidence in case of an accident, vandalism, or any other potential crime or insurance claim, a dashcam is definitely for you!

What are the key features of Dashcams?

Dash cameras have numerous different features, but not every potential feature is common to every dashcam model. While some models have one forward-facing lens to record everything you encounter on the road ahead, many others also have an interior facing camera to record everything that goes on inside the cab.

Other common dashcam features include Full HD 1080p (or better) video, night vision capabilities, MicroSD storage, an LCD display screen to see what your camera is recording, and built-in GPS with alerts for things like known speed traps and red light cameras. Also possible are a Parking Mode with time lapse recording for continuous vehicle surveillance and a high-end feature whereby emergency services can automatically be alerted if you have an accident and are unable to call for help yourself.

How to choose the Dashcam that best matches your needs

Choosing your ideal dashcam model will mostly come down to the price/feature mixture. In other words, how much do you wish to spend, and for what minimum level of features? If you spend the least possible amount for an entry level model, you may not get advanced features like GPS and Full HD video. This may or may not be of concern. If it is, you can always look for a middle-of-the-road model with the key features you need but not the ones you don’t. Of course, only you can decide which features are “must haves” and which are nice to have but not really necessary.

How to connect and care for your Dashcam

Installing most dash cameras is super easy and only takes a few minutes. With windshield mounts that are affixed by double-sided 3M tape, all you have to do is peel off the backing and press the mount into place. Once it’s been attached, you can be assured that it isn’t going anywhere. Also, as most dashcams plug into a vehicle’s cigarette lighter charger (though some models can be directly wired into the car’s electrical system), all you’ll have to do is route the wire such that it’s as out of the way as possible and you’ll be ready to plug your camera in and start driving and recording. Maintenance too is easy, as most dashcams require very little attention once they’re up and running.
