The iMac is back, and it’s got a new chip on its shoulder

Apple’s new M3 chip takes the iMac up a notch

Apple first introduced its own silicon to the iMac when it equipped it with the M1, proving how well its redesigned all-in-one desktop could work with a whole new processor. The M3 takes that premise even further, doubling the speed from the M1 and up to 2.5x faster compared to the last 27-inch Intel-based iMac. The M3 chip is built on a 3-nanometre architecture, the smallest processor ever built for any Mac.

Despite that size differential, M3 delivers a performance boost for the iMac that makes it more than just a flashy computer. It has the power and efficiency to get things done for anyone who regularly works on content, be it creative, technical or educational. There are eight cores in total, four performance and four efficiency cores, plus an additional eight GPU cores to drive things off the bat. Other configurations that upgrade to additional cores on top of other specs are also available.

To push graphics computing further, Apple developed technologies like Dynamic Caching, a unique process that takes available memory and allocates only what’s precisely required to execute a task. There is also hardware-accelerated mesh shading. In a first for an iMac, M3 brings ray tracing to render more accurate details in both video content and video games.

This iMac is built to get the job done

The new iMac keeps the same 24-inch 4.5K Retina display, still made up of 11.3 million pixels. P3 wide colour gamut support and 500 nits of brightness, surrounded by thinner bezels with a frame measuring only 11.3mm thick. A 1080p FaceTime HD camera simplifies video calls and meetings with clarity, helping to keep in touch family, friends, and colleagues.

It comes with two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, though higher configurations will give you an extra two ports for a total of four. The Magic Keyboard has Touch ID for extra security when logging in, making payments and switching profiles. You can also choose between the Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad to go with it, or use your own third-party peripherals designed to work with the Mac.

The new M3 iMac doesn’t disappoint on colour, coming in a wide variety of choices to brighten things up. The base iMac comes in silver, blue, green, and pink. Move over to higher configurations and you get additional options, like yellow, orange, and purple.

Built with the environment in mind

No other iMac has been built with so many recycled materials, marking a first for Apple’s desktop computer lineup. The stand comes from 100% recycled aluminum, plus recycled rare earth magnets and tin soldering in multiple printed circuit boards. This is also the first Mac to have 100% recycled gold in the plating of multiple printed circuit boards, while the packaging is from entirely recycled wood fibres and cardboard.
