Get fast and reliable rural Internet at home with Starlink

Starlink offers high-speed Internet almost anywhere, notably in rural areas, to use in your home and on the go, and it’s now available at Best Buy.

Introduction to Starlink

Starlink, engineered by SpaceX, offers high-speed, low-latency Internet for the home, on the go, even aboard boats. All you need is an unobstructed view of the sky since it uses satellites via an orbital class reusable rocket. Thousands of satellites orbit the planet close to Earth (about 550km).

The motorized self-orienting Starlink hardware offers 25ms latency versus the 600ms latency offers with other options. Starlink speeds range from 25 to 220 Mbps downloads and 5-20Mbps uploads, with most users experiencing speeds over 100Mbps downloads. This will depend on location, hardware positioning, time of the7 day, chosen service plan, and more. Both standard and power user plans include unlimited data, the latter of which gives priority to the first 1TB each month. Ideal for both residential homes and businesses, especially in rural areas, the Starlink app has a tool to help you determine the best place to position the hardware, pointed at the sky for the most effective set-up.

Best Buy is the first retailer to offer Starlink hardware outside of its own website.

Who is Starlink best for?

Because Starlink leverages satellites in the sky, it is ideal for those who live in remote and rural areas who might otherwise experience choppy connections and spotty service. Those in urban areas already have options that afford similar speeds and stability, but in rural areas, fast, reliable Internet is more difficult to come by. With the high speeds and reliability of Starlink, you can enjoy bandwidth-intensive activities like streaming videos, making video calls, playing online games, working from home, and more.

Even bad weather is no match for Starlink. The hardware is weather-resistant, able to withstand harsh Canadian winters and humid Canadian summers, as well as rain, snow, and even harsh winds. It can melt snow and operate in temperatures as cold as -30°C and as hot as 50°C. However, heavy rain and snow can cause internet outages.

In addition to the standard plan for households and priority plan for high demand users and businesses, there’s also a mobile and mobile priority plan for RVs, campers, and other on the go use cases.

What else to know about Starlink

The kit comes with everything you need to get started in minutes, and Best Buy will offer Geek Squad installation. Along with the package that includes the Starlink hardware, base, router, Starlink cable, and AC cable, optional accessories include an Ethernet adapter and mesh Wi-Fi router. Buy up to 12 Starlink mesh nodes to further extend connectivity throughout a large home or cottage.

Consider mount options for permanent installation, choosing from a pipe adapter, short wall, long wall, pivot, and ridgeline mount kits, or a ground pole mount, ensuring the most seamless installation based on the structure of your home. Once mounted, plug it in, point it at the sky, and begin surfing. Starlink runs on Wi-Fi 5 with a dual-band radio and WPA2 security so you can safely connect.

The base plan offers 25-100Mbps download and 5-10Mbps upload speeds at 25-60ms latency while the priority is 40-220Mbps download, 8-25Mbps upload, and 25-60ms latency. Search for your location on the Starlink website to determine if Starlink is available in your area.
