Game of Thrones

By Melanie Boutin-Chartier

The thrilling HBO series Game of Thrones originated from, the political fantasy literature saga A Song of Ice and Fire written by George R.R. Martin. The author published 5 main novels starting with A Game of Thrones released in 1996. This epic story is still evolving with 2 novels confirmed for future release. Fans can't wait to discover what is yet to come with their favorite characters; they know all too well that in A Song of Ice and Fire, everything is possible. Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss the Game of Thrones TV series is known as the most-watched series in HBO history. The fifth season makes its way on DVD and Blu-Ray on March 15th, just in time for season 6 Premiere on April 24th on HBO Canada.

A political tragedy

The story takes place in Westeros and Essos where noble families fight for a place on the Royal Throne. Across 5 seasons, I’ve been thrilled to see these characters struggle to make Westeros a better place. Starting with the Stark family from Winterfell to the Lannister, whose power is so strong that everyone fear them. Try as you might to not care so much about these fictional characters, you will unavoidably become captured by their spell, as I have been. Feel the emotional roller coaster as some live through hell, or fall trying to make a case. The story, and the action keeps us on edge as we hope to see one die and another survive. Each episode closes with a cliffhanger so of course, we want more!

In Season 5, The Lannisters know their fate is in danger and do whatever they can to keep their royal lineage intact. Requesting a place on the throne—and the royal crown—we follow several characters’ journeys such as Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) and Ramsay Snow (Iwan Rheon) of the Bolton family. Add dragons, sorcerers and mythical creatures to the mix and we're in for a treat.

Martin created bold iconic figures that we can't just stand by and watch. Politics rule everything and everyone has a part in it. Violence, sexual scenes and epic action battles are what keep fans coming back every week. We grow to love and care about the characters, or despise them to the limit. Most importantly, we're still fond of the Stark family's destiny as we follow Jon (Kit Harington), Sansa (Sophie Turner) and Arya (Maisie Williams) on their personal quests for justice and liberty.

A beloved saga

Game of Thrones' popularity extends beyond all boundaries. Cosplayers dresses as Daenerys, Cersei, Sansa, Tyrion and Jon at comic cons. Proving the love and dedication fans share with the Game of Thrones franchise, Montreal's Comiccon received actress Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) last year and actor Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) in 2013 and 2015, both beloved characters in the series.
