  • Incremental upgrade with annoying change (RAM)
    Reviewed by Kelly - February 19, 2021

There aren't many changes to this model series over the previous year's version (see 14655794, which has a 10th-gen Intel processor instead of the 11th with this one), so most of those reviews will still apply. They did the design of the hinge to use a lid-leverage system, so now when the screen is open the back of the laptop is lifted off the surface it is on to improve airflow. Interestingly enough the "exhaust" for the air is actually on the top of the base of the laptop (at the rear) and blows out onto the bottom of the screen. Time will tell if this is a good design choice or not, but I can say it certainly is an interesting one. The speakers are still on the bottom of the laptop and still point "down". This has obviously been an intentional design choice by Acer for years (my E5-575 from 2016 also has downward-facing speakers) so obviously any sound issues remain (personally I always use a headset anyways). The screen is "okay". It's clearly still the exact same one/kind from my E5-575 with limited viewing angles and mediocre colouring, but it's passable (and obviously corners have to be cut somewhere). The laptop is still extremely easy to open with the right tools (you WILL need an opening tool) and still comes with a mounting bracket (found in the laptop) and screws (in a bag in the box) for if you want to install a secondary 2.5" SSD or HDD (I would absolutely recommend a 500 GB or 1 TB 2.5" SSD like a Samsung EVO, no reason to go HDD at this point). The included 512 GB SSD is also still replaceable. But this does bring me to the "annoying change" (to me) - with this model, Acer is now soldering RAM to motherboard, so there is only 1 RAM slot, despite not mentioning this anywhere in the specs. For this particular model, with 8 GB of RAM, 4 GB is soldered to the board while a 4 GB stick is located in the RAM slot. That means that if you wanted to get this laptop to 16 GB of RAM (as an example), you HAVE to buy a 16 GB RAM stick (which will give you 20 GB total) rather than just being able to buy a second 8 GB stick. This shouldn't be a deal breaker to anyone (including people who actually want to upgrade the RAM) but it is one of those annoying trends. All in all this is an okay laptop. I cannot speak to any gaming because I do not PC game, but this will get you through your day-to-day stuff with no issues.

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

  • Its ok but Poor Designing by Acer
    Reviewed by Nandi - May 6, 2021

Power cable jack is interfering with Network, USB and Hdmi jacks. When the laptop fully closed, its hard to open due to thin design. One side of the head phone (from Audio out jack) doesn't work. I don't want to fix with the warranty due to longer waiting time. Simply I bout a head phone with usb jack. Overall its ok for simple use.

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
