You want a Rolls, you pay THAT price. You want great inexpensive, THIS IS IT !!!

I see the bitchin', but if you want a great machine, equaling to a top-of-the-line with corresponding price you got to keep in mind you get for what you pay. The Aspire5 with the I5-8250U is quite fast (yes you can get faster, buy those!!) and maybe you can get faster started, but you can also reduce the start up menu with lesser openers (do you need really anything else than your browser like FIREFOX and your file folder until way later???). Smooth and fine running. Compare this performance with the "big and expensive" boys, and you see you got a bargain at this price point.

Smart, fast, but too big.

Yes, a great laptop. I came from a 2009 17.3" Aspire. This is blazing fast, allows many multi-page viewings. I strongly recommend this machine BUT for one thing. The complete lptop is bigger than the old machines, how do I know? This does not fit in the carry-bag I had the old machine comfortably in. I can not close the zippers. But, boy-oh-boy is it ever smooth and great.

Second Acer

Generally happy with the first Acer I owned, though a little disappointed at needing to replace after 5 years, but I guess we live in a disposable age.

cheap is cheap

Bad screen viewing angle, especially vertical. Cannot get ethernet cable out of the port - you need to twist and pull it with full force. And one day it will break because of that.

Excellent Value. Period.

Kaby Lake i5-8250U quad core processor. Sweet. Very smooth and fast. Will upgrade the 5400 rpm hard drive to an SSD at some point. Those having slow start up issues should clean up the start menu and sign in layers. I'm at the homepage in less than 20 seconds from powering up. I'm a few months into this purchase and the experience is excellent value, period.

Get what you pay for

Bought one when they were on sale. What a piece of crap. Takes so long to boot into Windows I went for a coffee break, came back and it was still booting (all defaults only)

Laptop for connoisseurs

Got one several days ago. And carefully observe what is going on in Windows Task Manager. The specs are not correct : 1) Base frequency is 1.6 GHz ! . And Turbo frequency goes up to 3.4 GHz. .. Cashe is 6 Mb :)) 2) It uses Both - Video memory up to 6 GB for Windows HD620 controller and separate 2 GB Nvidia card. For Internet browsing, office etc. video utilization is 1% :)) Running CAD / CAM with smile - 12 GB is fine ... Cons ? - memory modules are 2 slots - 1 slot 4 GB irremovable , other slot is populated with 8 GB - which , I guess, can be upgraded to 16 GB (total 20 GB) - hard drive can be changed to SSD 2,5" ... BUT if you upgrade them , then you got a laptop workstation for which some companies will sell you for 1700 hard cash CAD before HST:)

My Review

It came time to upgrade from my previous Acer which was approximately 8 or so years old. Found this one and knowing I was happy with Acer notebooks, it had what I was looking for especially the 17.3 inch screen, faster speed and processing. The construction is solid and the newer design keeps dust and grime out of the keyboard and the keys have a nice touch to them. However I am at awe that there are no light indicators telling me my cap lock may be on or the hard drive is still running, etc. What you get is a flash image on the screen when you hit your numloc or caps key which quickly disappears. So you may not realize it is on especially when you need to enter something that is case sensitive. So I give it a mediocre rating on that. I don't find it as fast as I had anticipated. The one area I am most critical of is the internal sound. I never had the problem with my older notebook but this one crackles at times. I think it's a good machine with some flaws.

Frustratingly Slow

I was happier with my 5 year old laptop over this one. Hangs all the time, slow startup, takes a long time to open a single program. I’d suggest another laptop over this one. I rely on my phone whenever possible over using the laptop.

Review got rejected before

Not sure why you rejected a previous review I gave regarding this notebook which was a positive review. Guess if that is the way you work I won't be doing any reviews ever again. Thanks.

Overall nice laptop. Thought it was slow at first but it was due to Windows 10, once you install all the updates this Acer runs great. Can get a lot of school work done on this and play games as well, I can also take this to class as battery life runs just over 7 hours on medium usage. Would recommend.

Good Versitile Laptop

After a few months now I can say this laptop can be used for both work and play. The new 8th generation Intel Core i5 processor with 12GB of RAM makes doing work on this effortlessly even with having multiple tabs open on your browser and a plethora of other apps running in the background. Also the Nvidia GeForce MX150 dedicated graphics card enables you to run games with no problem. A decent 17.3" CineCrystal screen to watch videos on YouTube and Netflix for hours is more enjoyable than viewing on a basic 15.6". All around this is a good pick for the price!

Good laptop

This is a decent laptop. To those with a problem its not the laptop but the default install of windows 10 that is causing your issue. You need to do a clean install of Windows and everything will work fine. I was having the same issues as Jack below.

Its a great laptop even better when you consider the price. Always an ACER fan and still am.

Good Value

The acer laptop is good value with latest H/W. I have the laptop for about a week. The build quality is good with an aluminum keyboard deck. The laptop is reasonably fast and responsive after the latest large windows update release. I have also updated to the latest BIOS to resolve any issues. Minor disadvantages are non-back lit keyboard, location of the 2 of 3 USB ports on the right-hand side of the laptop.

So slow

Literally my 2010 Gateway laptop boots faster than it

Avoid Acer

Please think ten times before buy Acer products. Very cheap technology and hardware inside the laptop. Motherboard gets problem within a year.

Bought it 2 days ago and will return it tomorrow. The startup takes more than 10 minutes every time after a reboot and it is extremely slow. Disk usage always at 100% without running a program. It is hard to believe that it has 12GB of RAM and a 8th generation i5 core. Don’t waste your time and money.

Thing's a beast, 'nuff said

Just bought this laptop over the weekend. The battery life is pretty good, performance is top notch, you can game on it quite well without the laptop feeling it too much. I love it to every core on this thing! One issue I had is that when I swapped the 1TB HDD for my Samsung 1TB SSD, it couldn't boot, I fixed this by: 1. Updating the Chipset driver, AHCI driver and BIOS. 2. Setting the boot mode to Legacy. Should work just fine after that though! It has been for me! :D Super happy with this purchase!
