Solid mid-ranger performer

I replaced an older mac air with the new Acer SF314-52. The mac was a good machine that didn't owe me anything, but the screen was starting to flicker and it was time. The new Acer is just what I wanted - a solid mid-range portable. Mine has 8gb ram and a 256gb solid state hard drive. The online reviews I read say mostly good things. When looking for something to put in the 'cons' column, critics often said they didn't like the gorrilla glass display on the Acer, but it's what was on my mac, and it's on my lenovo tablet, so the display seems fine to me. Really fine. No complaints whatsoever. If you're looking to do a lot of video editing or play some high-end games, you might prefer something more, with a dedicated video card or whatever. (BTW- that might be why another user complained the Acer ran hot - I've never found that). But if, like me, you're looking for a portable school/work/personal laptop for email/word processing/internet/etc, I've found the Swift 3 to be great. A good quality laptop that doesn't really have many frills, but then again doesn't really have any quirks or problems either.

Good Laptop

PROS: -Nice 1080p screen -Very fast for most tasks(Likely due to the 8th gen processor and DDR4 RAM) -SSD is nice and quick -Fans are quite quiet on my laptop -I love having a fingerprint sensor -Back-lit keys -Nice looking, feels high quality -Decent battery - Speakers aren't bad CONS: -Gaming is OK at best. -A little heavy for a 14in laptop -Fingerprint sensor only works 70% of time -The keyboard layout isn't ideal to me, but that's a matter of preference - Speakers are on the bottom of the laptop - So my personal laptop had a couple flaws. For one, its very slightly crooked, so one corner remains slightly raised when on a flat surface (Most people probably wouldn't notice but it bothers me). It also looks like it has a chip in the metal on the front. Doesn't impact anything but it was like that out of the box which is kinda annoying. Nonetheless, Good laptop, I like it overall.

Overall good purchase, would recommend with some caveats.

So far I really like this laptop but there are a few things I want to let you folks know. The same metal frame that makes this laptop so sleek and sturdy is a little sharp on the wrists while typing, definitely not as as comfortable as my past plastic laptops. The finger-print scanner is pretty cool when it works, unfortunately it seems to work 75% of the time and the other times I have to give in and use my password. The fan really isn't a big deal, all laptops use fans. Here's my biggest irritation, upon installing McAfee the laptop stopped streaming effectively and kept buffering. It became such a big deal and I couldn't figure it out, then I read that uninstalling McAfee would fix the issue. It did. My old laptop never had that problem. Besides the issues above this seems to be a great little laptop, quick and sleek and feels well built. Speakers are descent, and screen is 7/10. I definitely love the way it looks especially. Here's a tip, Best Buy has stopped the 90 days free financing option with their credit card and the next option is 6-months financing with a fee. I told them I'd buy the laptop if they waived the fee and they did, so you can get the financing if you hold your ground. I'd recommend this laptop.

Great machine.

Very solid machine and fast. Like the Gorilla Glass screen. Would have given it a five if it wasn't for all of the bloatware the machine was stuffed with urging me to buy one service after another.

The best laptop at this price point period.

I bought this laptop when it first came out with the i5-8250U for use in my computer science major program. Hardware wise, this laptop is easily the best in this price range. The CPU has major multitasking abilities with 4 physical cores and 4 logical ones. Screen is excellent and battery life also excellent (I get 10 hours with screen brightness at 30-50%). Here's the deal though.....I replaced Windows 10 with Linux the first day I brought it home. Most of the negative reviews on Best Buy for this laptop are really Windows 10 issues, not the hardware or build quality of the laptop. It's really misdirected negativity towards Acer.

Good specs on paper

In reality, Acer really had to cheap out on other aspects like the Bluetooth and WiFi adapter. Overall build quality not that great either. Good specs at a good price come with their caveats. Not expecting this PC to last more than 2.5 years before it begins to fail.

Battery life seems unreliable

have been using it for two days now. The battery at 100% showed 4:34 hrs left. Now, it's at 98%, and show 6:42 hrs left. Not sure what is going on. I have been just doing web browsing.

Not good

Using this laptop is such a pain. I bought new laptop since I used my old one for about 10 years now and this new acer laptop performance is about the same as my old one. I have requested several times to restore and it is still lagging even I am not doing any fancy stuff. I am only doing Microsoft office software such as excel, word, powerpoint while I am researching online for my work. It does have speaker problem even I change my battery settings as many recommended online. I don't know why I am getting so stressful paying this amount of money. So, I will not come back to acer anymore. It is cheap and the price tells you the quality. If you are looking for a cheap laptop and you are not doing anything with your computer. Go for it; otherwise, I do not recommend this laptop.

Recommendations required?

Looking to buy this product as my current laptop has become obsolete. Does it makes sense to go for extended warranty. Can we buy extended warranty before 1 year completion of company warranty? if you recommend to go for extended warranty, how many years shall I opt for? Thanks in advance! Regards, To be product buyer.!

Lightning quick for internet but can't handle a word doc.

This is a really nice unit, lightning quick on the internet. For internet I just check my email. I spend most of my time with the Paint program and word files which this thing cannot do. My word documents freeze and take for ever to save. My Paint pictures, when I make a box and move it, there are thousands of boxes (basically leaves a trail of boxes) to where ever I move the fine line box. The boxes will not go away until I change the size of my picture. I own an Acer 15.6" Aspire with a dual N3050 processor, Intel HD graphics, 500 gig SATA hard drive, 4 g of ram. I can open and run 30 word documents and 30 pictures at the same time with no issues. Internet access does take a couple of minutes and you have to wait with each click. It cost me 1/3 of this thing last year. Boot up time on my old unit is about 10 seconds before you can start working, this new supposedly Rocket takes about 6 seconds. It does open programs much faster (0.5 seconds versus 3 seconds) but it freezes and the screen blacks out with only two word documents open. The screen blacks out on my old inferior Acer 15.6" Aspire when I have 40 word documents and 40 pictures open at the same time. The 1080 screen/Intel UHD graphics causes most programs to appear blurry/fuzzy. I imagine if I lower the resolution the programs would appear normal but then what's the point of having a 1080 UHD screen?

Great laptop for the price, mediocre screen

I bought this laptop a month ago for school, and have been delighted with the purchase overall. It runs quickly with the 8th gen i5 processor and 8gb ram, and the SSD means that boot times are incredibly fast. I originally purchased one that had a defect with the screen, but the replacement that I received works very well. Pros: Lightweight, fast, nice design, good speakers for the size, great battery life, works well for light gaming. Cons: Keyboard is a bit cramped in some areas, screen isn't as bright as I might like and there were some issues with the IPS glow Overall, it's a great laptop for school, but not one that would replace a mid-range gaming PC. Even so, for every day browsing and school work, I've come to prefer it over my desktop computer

Consider this before buying

My new one arrived on last Friday (Jan 5, 2018). But since last night I'm noticing that the speakers are inconsistent. It's croupy on and off, like seal bark. Certainly a defected one is that I received. Will process the return tomorrow (Jan 8, 2018). I don't know one in how many are like this but for my bad experience and all the hassle it caused I have to rate just one.

Good with caveats

Nice overall design, good CPU, enough ports, good feel, portable, responsive and stable but... mediocre display. Decent contrast, at least visually but still quite dim. Some come with AUO Optronics display (bit brighter), some with somewhat dimmer and yellowish Chi Mei which feels not bright enough, detail is good though, less the color skewed towards yellow and hard to correct without sacrificing more of its brightness. Judge for yourself, see if it's good enough for your needs. For me this is rather borderline.

Incredible value!

I've had this laptop for probably almost a year now, and I can say with full confidence that this thing was worth every penny! While the design is fairly lackluster, it does feature a full aluminum chassis and a pretty solid display. As such, people often mistake for a MacBook Air, however the value is much better. It has a ton of ports, a fantastic battery life, and great backlit keyboard and trackpad. It is pretty good for a little bit of very light gaming, and perfect for working on as a student. Oh yeah, the fingerprint sensor is also a really convenient addition. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a great laptop for a great price!

Have been using it for over 8 weeks now. Really great quality at this price point. The metalic body, light weight, HD1080 monitor, backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader, etc. It's a beautiful laptop with great specs. Can't go wrong! My last Acer laptop lasted 5 years before I sold it on Craigslist, Acer makes good laptops.

First Impressions

I've had this laptop for a little over a week now. I've always been a bigger fan of Mac computers because they never seem to slow down, they are low maintenance with virus and hard drive issues, and I like the iOS interface a bit better than windows. That being said, this is my first experience with Windows 10 and I don't hate it. I think maybe Windows is picking up on the fact that users want an easier experience. I read a lot of reviews before picking a laptop and this had among the best reviews, for a mid-range but high quality laptop that's comparable in specs to the Macbook Air, which I've used in the past. I just want to address some of the things that keep coming up. I bought this laptop to create a website and start my business above all. I'm not going to be running photoshop or pc games that you'd probably need a top of the line laptop for. That being said, I do need to edit professional photos for my website, but I feel like we all do a little bit of photography now a days, and this laptop is pretty capable of it. Running a few tabs with youtube on in the background is no problem. The only adjustments I've mad to make are to the keyboard. The left shift is slightly more to the left and it always throws me off but that will come with time. The brightness is really fine for me. If I hadn't read the reviews about it I wouldn't even notice that it's lower than it could be. I'll probably be doing most of my work inside anyways, but my house is pretty bright with lots of windows, and I don't find it difficult to use honestly. The fans are not loud. They will come on if you're doing a few things or the laptops been on for a while, but if you're in a cafe or at home I doubt you'll notice unless you're used to total silence. A classroom might be noticeable but I doubt enough for you to feel embarrassed about using it. One other thing I've noticed is that I like using google chrome, and sometimes opening it, the screen will be black for like 20 seconds before I'm able to see my home page/etc. Maybe that's a glitch with Windows 10 and google chrome. I know windows 10 recommends Micfrosoft Edge or whatnot (internet explorer it looks like), but I don't like using it. That's literally the only qualm I have and maybe I'll just switch browsers. Oh, battery life is definitely not 10 hours. Probably not even 7. I think the battery life is worse than my old Mac. Working on my website the other day (and not even having other background programs running) I think I got 6 hours before it went on battery save move, so I can imagine doing more intensive work would drain it quicker. I'm now going to just assume I'll get 6 hours out of if and use the charger if I'll be longer. It's not a huge deal to me though.

best laptop for it's price

I will first state the cons: the keyboard takes some getting used to if you haven't had spaces between the keys before. 2nd the maximum brightness isn't as high as some other laptops, but I've never felt like it was not bright enough. Pro's: I have had this laptop for over a month and I absolutely love it. it's incredibly fast, can play decent games, has a 10h battery life, is light and portable and overall a perfect laptop for school. Overall this is a no brainer, for this price you will not find a more satisfying laptop

Amazing gor it's price

I bought this laptop a few weeks ago. So far I can tell is the best laptop I've ever had. It is very light and it's very similar to a MacBook in terms of appearance with a metallic finish. Its keyboard has backlight and the screen resolution is unbelievable. Some cons are some sharp edges that you may find uncomfortable while typing and the brightness of the screen is not that high.

Review day after purchasing

I had originally purchased the Acer Aspire ES15. I was not impressed at all. The fan was loud and it was overall very slow. Now I have purchased this one, the Acer swift 3. So far I love it, it is very quiet (obviously makes noise, what laptop doesn't? but the noise is not noticeable unless you are trying to hear it). To me this gives a slick mac feel. If I hadn't of purchased this, I would of gotten a macbook air. This is very close to it, kind of like windows version of mac.. The laptop was out of my price range, but that is okay. I will be able to pay it off, this laptop is definitely worth the price. If it gets cheaper in the future I suggest getting your hands on it. If my opinion changes, I will post a new review.

THE midrange laptop

I love the aluminum body, and I really like the keyboard as well. It's super responsive. It's super fast, and supports the new 8th gen U processor, that for the fist time, will support super speed with 8 threads and a quad core, and give low power consumption (U series is low power consumption). |The body will not stain, oily fingers seem to dissipate after touching the body, but don't touch the keyboard with anything too oily, it will kind of "stain" the keyboard, but all you have to do is wipe it off with a moist cloth. I don't like the trackpad and how it clicks, it seems cheap. The screen also is super cheap considering everything else. I'm not talking about protectivness, it has an impressive gorilla glass design, but the max brightness isn't high enough, and the dimmest setting is still kind of bright. These two traits remind me of my cheap laptop that came for under 400 dollars. Also if you're not experienced, the bloatware and trial software should be removed or simply uninstalled to remove these stupid trials. This will free up SSD and boost your computer's speed. However, if you can see past these few minor inconveniences, the speed of this laptop for everyday use and heavy "26 application running in the background while watching a full hd video", and still not have the fan run for a while is pretty dang good. The aluminum body is super nice, looks almost like an HP xps if you have one, and the keyboard reminds me of the old gen MacBook keyboard response. These two attributes, premium aluminum body and premium laptop speed and battery life are two features you don't see high midrange, low premium laptops. You have to try out it's speed. Also, don't get the extended warranty. Final thing is that it being ultrathin, I hope it lasts very long, but don't expect it to cross 3-4 years. It's the only thing I hate about such thin laptops. However, if you treat the laptop better than you treat yourself, it's probably last more than 5 years. That's what I plan to do with this hefty investment If you need reliability and longevity, pick a notebook or another laptop that's a bit thicker. I say this based on my old computer that weighs as much as a gaming laptop, but performs even worse than a Chromebook in multitasking. But it's lasted 7 years with the most terrible treatment. |I've never treated it with respect, and I've literally beat it up, closed the lid super hard, slammed the keyboard, and flexed the screen, but it never has submitted. \it is literally the indestructible laptop that will continue at the same speed no matter what happens. However, beware of spinning and possibly malfunctioning hardrives. Does anyone know of other laptops being released with an i5-8250u that will be out soon. The Swift series has been very reliable and great in it's past, so I feel like this won't give me any problems. But if you happen to know, please leave a review helping me out. Thnaks
